2 "teens" on West Side among 15 shot, 3 fatally, on New Year's Day

Staff report

7:29 p.m. CST, January 1, 2013
Two teenagers were shot and seriously wounded this afternoon in the Humboldt Park neighborhood, among at least 15 people shot since midnight Monday, three of them fatally, authorities said.

Paramedics were called about 4:30 p.m. to the 2600 block of West Chicago Avenue for two people who’d been shot, according to Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford.

They were both taken in serious to critical condition to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, said Langford.

Police News Affairs Officer Veejay Zala said the victims, both males in their teens, were shot in the chest and their conditions had stabilized at Stroger.

Earlier, a man was shot to death in the 4500 block of South Champlain Avenue, in what was believed to be the second homicide of the new year.

What appears to have been the third homicide of 2013 took place about two hours after the Champlain killing. About 4:56 p.m. in the Gage Park neighborhood, a man was shot in the chest in a possible drive-by shooting in the 5800 block of South Sacramento Avenue, Zala said about 7 p.m. He had no further details to release.

The man, identified as Devonta Grisson, 19, of the 6700 block of South Artesian Avenue, was declared dead on the scene at 5:05 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Officials: West Side man is city's first 2013 homicide victim

By Robert McCoppin and Rosemary R. Sobol

Tribune reporters

1:20 p.m. CST, January 1, 2013
A 20-year-old West Side man was the first Chicago homicide victim of 2013, one of 11 people across the city shot since midnight.

Someone shot Octavius Dontrell Lamb, 20, in the throat in the 700 block of North Noble Street in the West Town neighborhood on the West Side, according to a spokeswoman for the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Lamb, of the 700 block of North Throop Street, was pronounced dead at Northwestern Memorial Hospital at 4:16 a.m., she said.

Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Jose Estrada said the victim was shot in the chest at 3:50 a.m. at the Noble Street address.

Lamb worked as a dishwasher at a downtown hotel until 2 a.m. when he got a ride to his old neighborhood on Throop Street, according to his family and friends.

He was drinking Korbel Champagne and had stopped at a nearby store for cigarettes before someone shot him while he was in an alley behind a row of subsidized housing, according to his family and friends.

Police found the bottle of champagne in a nearby garbage can and took it for evidence.

His 14-year-old brother Demarcius Lamb and friends poured a bucket of hot water to wash the frozen blood off the pavement Tuesday morning.

Asked why somebody would shoot him, Demarcius could offer no reason, except to say that his brother was not a gang member.

Police identified him partly by a tattoo of his nickname "Oc."

"He was devotional, hard-working," Lamb said. "He'd do anything for anybody. He provided for me."

Nobody was in custody and Area Central detectives are investigating, Estrada said.
The apparent first shooting in 2013 happened about 1:15 a.m. on the 5100 block of West Madison Street in the South Austin neighborhood on the West Side, police said.

The 29-year-old man was shot in the mouth and left shoulder and was taken in good condition to Mount Sinai Hospital, according to police and fire department officials.

The man was in a bar on the 5000 block of West Madison Street when he and another man got into an altercation with others at the bar, police said.

The other victim was hit over the head with a bottle and the gunshot victim ran out of the bar when he sustained the wound to his mouth, police said.
Police were searching for the offenders, officials said.

In other shootings:

• A 22-year-old man was shot in the upper left leg while he was attending a party in the basement of a home on the 9700 block of South Beverly Avenue in the Beverly neighborhood on the Far Southwest Side, police said. The shooting happened about 1:55 a.m. and the man was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where his condition had stabilized, police said.

• About 2:40 a.m., a 22-year-old man was shot in the 11700 block of South Sangamon Street in the West Pullman neighborhood on the Far South Side, police said. He walked into MetroSouth Medical Center in Blue Island but was later transferred in critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

• Also about 2:40 a.m., a 17-year-old male was shot in the right shoulder after an argument escalated into a shooting in the 1600 block of North Kedzie Avenue in the Logan Square neighborhood on the Northwest Side, according to Estrada.

The victim was in a vehicle in the area of North Avenue and Kedzie when he got out of the vehicle and became engaged in an argument with a group of people, Estrada said. An unknown male pulled out a gun and fired several shots, Estrada said, striking the victim once. He was taken to Norwegian-American Hospital by someone else at the scene before being transferred in good condition to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center.

• A 20-year-old man was sitting in a porch about 2:45 a.m. in the 5700 block of South Laflin Street in the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side when he heard shots and felt pain, Estrada said. He suffered a gunshot wound to the right forearm but refused treatment.

• At about 3:50 a.m. a male and a female were shot on the 3800 block of South Wells Street in the Fuller Park neighborhood on the South Side, police said. The female was shot in the thigh and the male was shot in the back, police said. One victim was taken to Mercy Hospital while the more seriously wounded person was taken to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, fire officials said.

• About 4:40 a.m. in the 4700 block of South Loomis Boulevard in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on the South Side, a 21-year-old man was shot four times by a pair of unknown offenders who fired into his car as he was driving on that block, Estrada said. The man, who was hit twice in the upper right arm once in the back and once in the left thigh, is in serious condition at Stroger hospital.

• A man and a woman were wounded in a shooting incident about 6:10 a.m. in the 5900 block of South Maplewood Avenue in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood on the Southwest Side, Estrada said. The woman, 32, is in critical condition at Stroger hospital after suffering wounds to the face and back. The male, also at Stroger, was wounded in the head and chest; Estrada described his condition as "grave." No other details were available on the shooting.

Estrada said police are questioning one person in the Maplewood incident.

No one is in custody in any of the other shootings, police said, as investigations continue.

Mud-on-White Murder?

Muffler shop owner killed in apparent robbery in Gage Park

BY HUNTER CLAUSS Staff Reporter January 3, 2013 2:07AM

A Southwest Side store owner died after he was shot during a robbery at his Gage Park muffler shop Wednesday night, authorities said.

Two men walked into Independent Muffler Shop, 5654 S. Western Ave., about 5:25 p.m. and pretended to be customers, police said. The men then tried robbing the store’s owner, 57-year-old Michael Kozel, and an employee, authorities said.

That’s when Kozel, of the 2700 block of West Seipp Street, was shot in the back, authorities said. The employee was not injured.

Kozel was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, where he died at 9:09 p.m., according to police and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

Kozel’s death is the fifth homicide since the beginning of the new year.

Police have made no arrests as Area Central detectives investigate.

Gage Park is one of Chicago's 77 well-defined community areas, located on the city's southwest side; it is also the name of a park within the neighborhood. Gage Park's population is largely working-class, and its housing stock is mostly bungalows. For generations, the neighborhood was Eastern European and Irish Catholic.

The neighborhood remains overwhelmingly Catholic with the addition of many Hispanic residents.

Note how both the Sun-Times and Wikipedia withhold/spin race reality. In spite of the fact there is an unharmed witness, the only description we have of the at-large murderers is that they're 'men'--like half of the population.

Wikipedia intentionally convolutes race and religion, implying that European Catholics and mestizo nominal Catholics are the same animal, when they most assuredly are not. The actual demographic figures show these 'hispanics' (not from Madrid!) are now the supermajority, thanks to jewish immigration agitation.

West Pullman is a neighborhood located on the far south side of the city of Chicago, Illinois. It is one of the 77 official community areas of Chicago. West Pullman is not a part of the historic Pullman company town.

It is bounded on the north by 115th Street, on the east by the former Illinois Central Railroad, on the south by the Calumet River and Riverdale, on the west by Calumet Park, Blue Island and Ashland Avenue.

A high number of jobs were lost in the 1980s and 1990s making unemployment one of West Pullman's biggest problems. The other is the high amount of toxic waste left behind from the factories. A joint effort from community leaders, residents, city officials and the government is attempting to reduce the levels of toxicity.[2]

UPDATE

Father’s last words to son: ‘They shot me in the back’

BY STEFANO ESPOSITO Staff Reporter [email protected] January 3, 2013 2:07AM

When the poor strolled into his Gage Park muffler shop with their hands out, Michael Kozel often gave them work tidying up around the business he’d owned for two decades.

If a customer didn’t quite have enough for the bill, he’d say: Pay me later.

On Wednesday evening, the man who worried little about money came face to face with a gunman who at that moment cared about nothing else — in a neighborhood that’s been plagued with robberies in recent weeks.

Before making off with a wallet, the gunman shot Kozel. The 57-year-old grandfather just had time to telephone his 31-year-old son, also named Michael.

“They shot me in the back,” were Kozel’s last words to his boy.

As police sought Kozel’s killer and his accomplice Thursday, Kozel’s family and friends were left wondering how so generous a man could be so cruelly cut down.

“He looked like Santa, with a big beard, and he was just as giving,” said his son, who rushed to the muffler shop at 5654 S. Western, after getting the call from his dying father. The younger Kozel arrived in time to see an ambulance crew preparing to take his father to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after 9 p.m.

Police released few details about the murder — the fifth of the New Year — but said two men walked into Kozel’s shop around 5:25 p.m. The men initially pretended to be customers. Then they tried to rob Kozel. One of Kozel’s employees told the Chicago Sun-Times he was in the back of the shop when he heard a gunshot. The employee, who would only agree to be identified as “Jeff,” said he ran to the front of the store, where he found a dying Kozel. That’s when the gunman seized him, Jeff said.

“He grabs me and threw me to the ground and said, ‘Give me the money,’” said Jeff, who wound up giving the man his wallet. The gunman and his accomplice then fled.

On Thursday morning, men with grease under their fingernails wiped away tears and hung their heads as they spoke about their employer, their friend — a man they called “The Big Kahuna.”

Rafael Lopez, 48, a tow-truck driver for Kozel for 10 years, said he was “a great man.”

“The best man in the world,” Lopez said. “Helped everybody. If you didn’t have no money, he don’t care.”

Kozel had a lifelong love of low-rider cars with big engines, the younger Michael Kozel said.

“He liked cars that went from zero to 60 and just threw you back in the seat,” he said.

The father was the proud owner of maroon low-rider Chevrolet Impala, but his family mattered far more than any possession.

He’d been married to his wife, Antonia, for more than 30 years.

“She’s lost her best friend,” his daughter, Amber Kozel, said of her mother.

The older Michael Kozel struggled with a fear of airplanes, but that didn’t stop him from traveling to Florida, Puerto Rico and Mexico, his daughter said.

“He hated flying, but he would go, because it made [his wife] happy,” Amber Kozel said.

The Gage Park neighborhood has been hit hard by robberies over the past few weeks.

Between Dec. 14 and Dec. 27, there were 11 holdups in the neighborhood. And during that period, overall crime spiked in the neighborhood compared to the time last year, police said.

Kozel’s shop is in police Beat 824 in the Chicago Lawn District. There were four robberies on that beat from Dec. 14 to Dec. 27, records show. A man also was killed in Beat 824 in a drive-by shooting on Jan. 1 in the 5800 block of South Sacramento.

There was another murder in Gage Park on Dec. 26 when a man was gunned down in the 5300 block of South California.

Merry Christmas and Happy Gun Control, Chicago

by Karen De Coster

Saturday, December 29, 2012

Chicago, one of America’s most Nazified, anti-gun cities, has just recorded its 500th homicide. This is another banner year for Rahm Emanuel’s tightly controlled non-gun “paradise.” Breitbart recently reported that Chicago’s own stats show that 440 school age children were shot in 2012 in Chicago’s paradise. Breitbart’s Awr Hawkins writes:

These numbers are well above those for the 2011-2012 school year, in which 319 Chicago students were wounded and another 24 were killed.

And yet, it has long been reported that the school where Rahm’s children attend to their education has an armed security guard. Additionally, his children also have an armed escort to get them to and from school, just like those Hollywood celebrities who clamor for gun control while they enjoy full-time, armed bodyguards. And yet, the citizen gun control puppets continue to lap up the “wisdom” of their Masters and spew their hyper-emotional pleas to be controlled and enslaved.

Oh – and what appeared in the Chicago Tribune just a few days ago? An article by Laura Washington, written in the usual Oprahified manner, stating that gun control would be the best present ever for those of us who lack Chicago’s glorious standards for paradise. In fact, Miss Laura openly calls for totalitarian decrees on the part of the Napoleonic branch of government:

Obama can do more. He can issue executive orders that will bypass the congressional sausage makers. He can deploy his White House bully pulpit to back similar state and local efforts.

If we don’t take action for the little angels of Sandy Hook, now, America will be forever haunted by the demons of gun violence.

In addition, Miss Laura also states that:

During the 2012 campaign, he avoided confrontations on gun control. When Obama was asked about gun control at a presidential debate, he punted. He was terrified of the People of the Gun, particularly in election swing states like Pennsylvania and Virginia.

People of the Gun? How cutesy. Actually, Obama and Rahm Emanuel both quickly realized, upon Obamanual’s first election, that they could not win the federal battle for gun control because so many states of free and law-abiding peoples are still heroically immersed in a gun culture, unlike their murder city. Like all of us, politicians pick their battles, and after Obamanual realized this battle could not be won, Emanuel separated from Obama and took his schemes back to the city that gave us both of these megalomaniac buffoons. Sorry Chicago, better that you have Rahm all to yourselves rather than the rest of us.

Chicago, feel free to revel in your gun control authoritarianism and ignore your city’s violence, murder, bloodshed, and perpetual terror, but you aren’t going to import your political enslavement and perverted twist of logic to the rest of us anytime soon.

By Peter Nickeas

Tribune reporter

7:57 a.m. CST, January 5, 2013

At least nine people were shot across the city between Friday and Saturday mornings, including three incidents where two people were wounded by gunfire.

Two men in their 20s were shot about 2:30 a.m. Saturday morning in the Northwest Side neighborhood of Mayfair. Police said they were shot in the 4000 block of West Montrose Avenue. The pair drove to Our Lady of the Resurrection Hospital, Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Amina Greer said.

One of the two, 21, is in critical condition at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center and the other, 23, was transferred to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston. He's in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the ear, Greer said.

Two others were inside a car with the men when someone drove alongside theirs and opened fire, police said. The shooter's vehicle drove away but it's not clear what direction.

Two other men were shot in the 3800 block of South California Avenue about 12:15 a.m. Saturday. Someone dropped them off at Mount Sinai Hospital, a few miles north of the Brighton Park crime scene on California Avenue.

Police said the pair are expected to survive. Each of them, 22 and 24, had leg wounds and were walking when someone in a dark vehicle fired at them, Greer said.

An 18-year-old woman suffered a graze wound about 9:30 p.m. Friday night in the 4600 block of North Malden Avenue in the Sheridan Park neighborhood on the North Side. She was walking in a group when someone got out of a small light-colored car, shot, and got back in. The car fled west on Wilson Avenue, Greer said.
Another man, 21, was shot in the buttocks in the 4700 block of North Sheridan Avenue about 5:35 p.m. That happened in the Uptown neighborhood about four blocks from where the 18-year-old woman was shot hours later. He and the woman were both taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center.

About 3:45 p.m. Friday, a 58-year-old man was shot in the head in the 1000 block of West 47th Street in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on the South Side. No other details were available.

From Uptown to Englewood, Irving Park to Brighton Park, Humboldt Park to the Back of the Yards, gunshots were heard throughout the city this weekend. Between Friday afternoon and Sunday night, four people were shot to death and at least 13 people were wounded in shootings in Chicago, including a man shot while riding in a car on the Dan Ryan Expy. 1 killed, 8 wounded in overnight shootings

By Adam Sege and Liam Ford

Tribune reporters

7:27 a.m. CST, January 8, 2013
A 24-year-old man was killed and at least eight others were wounded in overnight gun violence on the city's West and South Sides, according to police.

In the latest attack, a 24-year-old man was shot multiple times about 6:10 a.m. in the 4000 block of West Wilcox Street, Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Laura Kubiak said. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

No further details were immediately available about the shooting, which happened in the West Garfield Park neighborhood.

Shots rang out as the man was standing on the sidewalk in the 4600 block of South California Avenue, striking the man in the bicep and lower back, News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro said.

The man managed to drive 15 blocks to the 3100 block of South California, where he was found by first responders. Paramedics transported the man to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.

About 2:30 a.m. in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, a 24-year-old man was shot in both thighs while walking in an alley, authorities said.

The shooting happened in the 900 block of West 53rd Street, Alfaro said. The man was taken to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, where his condition was stabilized.

About 9:50 p.m., a 17-year-old boy was shot multiple times near the intersection of 30th Street and South Tripp Avenue in the Little Village neighborhood, police said.

Two males exited a black SUV and approached the teenager as he walked down the sidewalk, shooting him multiple times, Alfaro said.

The teen was taken to Stroger, where he was listed in critical condition, Alfaro said.

Police officers found a vehicle matching the description of the suspects' SUV, and after a brief pursuit, the SUV struck a light pole in the 3900 block of West Cermak Road, Alfaro said.

Three occupants were taken into custody and were regarded as possible suspects. No injuries were reported.

Police described the shooting as gang-related, a description shared by a close family friend of the teenager, who asked to remain anonymous when interviewed near the crime scene.

About 8:30 p.m., two men and a woman were shot in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood. Two men emerged from a gangway in the 6200 block of South Rockwell Street and fired shots into a parked vehicle where the three people were sitting, Alfaro said.

A 19-year-old woman who was struck in the chest was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, Alfaro said. A 22-year-old man struck in the thigh and 23-year-old man shot in the chest and buttocks were both taken to Holy Cross Hospital, Alfaro said.

The conditions of all three were stabilized, Alfaro said.

About 7:45 p.m., a 31-year-old man was shot in Marquette Park neighborhood, News Affairs Officer Joshua Purkiss said. The man suffered a gunshot wound to the leg in the 7100 block of South Campbell Avenue and his condition was stabilized on the scene, said Purkiss.

About 6:30 p.m. in the Washington Park neighborhood, another 31-year-old man was shot in the left arm in the 6000 block of South Indiana Avenue, Purkiss said. His condition was stabilized on the scene, said Purkiss.

Purkiss had no hospital information or information on circumstances in the Marquette Park and Washington Park shootings. Fire department officials did not respond to attempts to contact them.

Chicago’s Murder Rate in 2013 is Already Outpacing 2012
Jordan Sargent

Murder is routine in the city of Chicago, which experienced over 500 homicides last year (the number ranges from 506 to 516, depending on your source). It's so routine that the city became a sort of far-off black cloud lingering in the background of the year's massacres in Aurora and Newtown, a reminder — if you remembered — that gun violence takes lives in grotesque numbers every single day.

Well, things aren't looking any better at the start of 2013.

In the first six days of this year, 12 people were murdered in Mayor Rahm Emanuel's Chicago. That's two ahead of last year's six-day total. And at two a day, it puts us on a pace for 730 this year, which would be our highest total since 1997.

That number is actually now up to 13 — an unidentified man was killed last night on the city's West side.

There's still over 11 months left in the year, of course, but murder rates tend to increase as the weather warms up, so this start is far from an encouraging sign that fatal violence in Chicago is decreasing. Here, via Red Eye, are the names and stories of the 12 murder victims in the first eight days of this year.

Octavius Lamb, 20

Well, it's certainly not because chi-town is loaded with niggers. They certain aren't ferals wit attitude, they are respectable, upstanding citizens, albeit some of them retain tails and, uh, can't really stand on all fours yet. I say we go after the guns. Yeah, that's the ticket. Guns are the problem!

The logic of statist, anti-white (judeo-bolshevik-illiberal) tyrants: niggers can't control themselves, therefore the white men I hate should lose their rights. Edit

Niggers belong on a game preserve, not running wild in human society as 'equals.' The blackies aren't ready for prime time, they're still on primate time. Edit

The only civilized thing niggers do is kill other niggers. The real question is why humans aren't doing the same. Equals? They're our EQUALS?? Are you fucking kidding me?

Let's put our liberal heads together and think this one through, gooey homies. What are guns using to commit these crimes? Answer: niggers. So then, what's our liberal solution? Nigger control! Force these evil metal tools to REGISTER THEIR NIGGERS NOW! Let's get these goddam ASSAULT NIGGERS off the streets of Chicago.

Hello Mr Linder, I was wondering if you could tell Steve Akins to stop discussing the topic underage girls on the forum, or at least stop him from posting pictures of nude underage girls. Akins is far too entertaining and creates too many LOLs to ban in my opinion.
Thanks.

1 killed, 1 wounded outside Old Town store

By Jennifer Delgado and Liam Ford

Tribune reporters

7:31 AM CST, January 9, 2013

A man was killed and another seriously wounded in a shooting outside a convenience store in the Old Town neighborhood on the North Side, authorities said.

The shooting occurred around 6:15 p.m. Tuesday in the 1300 block of North Sedgwick Street. Tyshawn Blanton, 31, of the 1300 block of North Halsted Street, died and a 20-year-old man was shot in the back and taken in serious-to-critical condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

Neighbors reported hearing as many as 10 gunshots and later saw one man being taken away in a neck brace, the other being worked on by paramedics.

Family members said Blanton grew up in the Cabrini-Green housing complex nearby and recently had a child. Before heading to the hospital, family members huddled in the street near the shop, crying, as officers and detectives questioned store employees and canvassed the area.

Neighbors said they are angered by what seems to be an increase in crime. “You can’t even go to the store without getting shot and killed,” said Chante Morris, 30.

About 90 minutes later, a 21-year-old man was shot in the 600 block of East 51st Street about 7 p.m., Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Ron Gaines said. He was taken to Stroger Hospital in fair condition with wounds to his right forearm and hip, Gaines said.

Earlier, two men were shot and seriously wounded near a small strip mall at 65 Street and Western Avenue on the Southwest Side shortly after 4 p.m., authorities said. Photos from the scene showed police checking the pavement of a strip mall for shell casings.

A 20-year-old man was shot in the leg and taken in serious condition to Stroger Hospital; a 19-year-old man was also shot in the leg and taken in good condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

In another shooting, a 24-year-old man was wounded in the 13000 block of South Drexel Avenue in the Altgeld Gardens housing complex. He drove to Roseland Hospital but was transferred to Advocate Christ Medical Center in serious condition with a gunshot wound to the chest and three to the left arm, police said.

Panel: Closing any CPS high schools would pose gang danger to students

Commission studying district's proposal for shutdowns issues preliminary report

By Noreen S. Ahmed-Ullah, Chicago Tribune reporter

8:30 PM CST, January 10, 2013

The commission studying school closings in Chicago is recommending that no high schools be shut down because doing so would endanger students by forcing them to cross gang boundaries or move to schools where rival gangs hold sway.

"With gang boundaries sometimes shifting on an almost weekly basis, and barring extreme circumstances, it is simply too risky to ask high-school-age kids to cross gang lines just to travel to and from schools," the Commission on School Utilization wrote in a preliminary report issued Thursday.

The commission, appointed by Chicago Public Schools chief Barbara Byrd-Bennett to engage the community on the thorny issue of closing schools, won't issue its final report until early March.

The district said it needs to close schools that are underenrolled to deal with a looming $1 billion deficit. CPS won't unveil its list of schools to be closed until the end of March, creating fear and confusion among many parents in South and West Side communities that figure to be hit hardest.

The commission's preliminary report could help frame the issue for those communities. In addition to recommending that high schools be left alone, the commission recommends that schools with more than 600 students be kept open, as well as underused schools that are in the process of adding grades.

The highest-performing "Level 1" schools would also be spared, as would Level 2 schools that are showing improvement, under the commission's recommendations.

If the report holds weight at decision time, more than 30 high schools that operate at less than 60 percent capacity would remain open. The district argues that keeping underenrolled schools open costs millions of dollars, but Commission Chairman Frank Clark said Thursday that shuttering high schools would simply be too dangerous.

"High schools should be taken off the table because the impact, particularly the safety issue around gang boundaries, it's an issue that goes across the school system and is particularly burdensome and problematic for the older kids," Clark said. "We just couldn't figure out a way to adequately deal with that and thought at this time that simply should be something we table."

What will be in the commission's final report remains unclear. CPS has said the group will issue a list of schools to target for closing. Clark has said the commission will not produce such a list.

Byrd-Bennett has also said the district is not bound to follow the commission's suggestions and on Thursday issued a statement saying, "I look forward to giving the report a thoughtful review over the next few days to consider their recommendation."

CPS spokeswoman Becky Carroll said Byrd-Bennett will take a few days to review the report before offering a formal response.

"She could accept all their recommendations or tweak some of them," Carroll said.

Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis has been critical of the commission but on Thursday said she agreed that high schools shouldn't be closed. The union, though, doesn't think any schools should be closed.

"I think it's a manufactured crisis," Lewis said. "The numbers they are using to justify this work are not real numbers."

Critics have questioned the commission's independence from Byrd-Bennett and Mayor Rahm Emanuel, their suspicions fueled by the fact that the body is taking advice from the Civic Consulting Alliance, which has done extensive work for the mayor.

On Thursday, Clark acknowledged that the Alliance helped the commission put together its preliminary report.

"They don't guide us," he said. "They helped with the drafting. They helped with notes. But every word in this document is the consensus of the commission itself. No one directed us what to say."

When asked if that meant the group did not help with analysis on the report, Clark said, "I didn't say they didn't help with the analysis. The question is, 'Did they write a report and we signed off on it?' and the answer is 'No.'"
