Two men have been arrested on suspicion of murder after the deadly knife attack at an IKEA warehouse in Sweden on Monday.

The victims, a mother, 55, and her 28-year-old son, died at the scene after being stabbed in the cutlery section of the store in Västerås, some 70 miles west of the Swedish capital Stockholm.

The suspects, aged 23 and 35, are both asylum seekers staying in the same government-provided accommodation in the area, local media reports.

The mother and son were both from northern Sweden, and had been visiting relatives in Västerås before going shopping for flatpack furniture at IKEA yesterday.

'We do not see a connection between the victims and the perpetrators as it stands,' said Per Ågren, local police chief said, adding that it appears that the victims were chosen at random.

'It is an insane incident that has taken place, that two people have been knife-murdered in IKEA.'

The 35-year-old murder suspect was also injured in the attack and remains in hospital. As he suffered life threatening injuries, police have not been able to question him about the incident.

Police have conducted a search of two rooms at an asylum seekers' accommodation, Aftonbladet reports, and court documents seen by the newspaper confirm that the younger suspect is housed there.

A man claiming to be a roommate of the 23-year-old confirms that the suspect had told him he was going to Västerås yesterday and that he has not seen him since.

Västmanland Police have released a statement confirming the arrests of two men, born 1992 and 1979. but declined to comment the alleged search of the asylum seekers' housing Tuesday morning.

The incident took place at lunch-time on Monday, and police were able to arrest the younger suspect at the scene some 20 minutes later.

At least one of the victims were stabbed near an emergency exit in the attack, which witnesses say took place in the part of the store displaying kitchen utensils, Aftonbladet reports.

'It was chaos, people came running and no one understood what had happened. Then we saw a person lying, lifeless, in the cutlery section,' a witness told the newspaper.

'We found a man and a woman who had knife injuries and who later died of their wounds,' a police statement said.

Mattias Johansson, department store manager at IKEA Vasteras said the victims appeared to be 'three seemingly ordinary visitors'.

An IKEA spokeswoman has confirmed an incident had taken place at the store, but did not provide any further details.

When a ‘crazed’ knifeman runs amok killing innocent people in a busy shopping area, the media and police always seem desperate to maintain that the attack “has no known motive” and that they have no idea what drove the killer. It gets particularly suspicious when there is clearly a deliberate decision made to avoid giving any kind of description of the assailant.
