Huge crowds as Australia's gay Mardi Gras turns 30

[March 1, 2008]

SYDNEY (AFP) — Up to 300,000 people lined Sydney's streets to watch the Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Saturday as the largest gay pride march in the Asia Pacific region marked its 30th anniversary.

For the first time, serving military personnel were among the 10,000 costumed participants sashaying through the city's Oxford Street gay district, showing how much attitudes have changed since the first event in 1978.

That march, staged at a time when male homosexuality was still illegal in New South Wales state, was a demand for gay rights that ended with more than 50 arrests as police and protesters clashed.

Since then, the Mardi Gras has become better known as a sequin-adorned extravaganza that attracts tourists from around the world and pumps millions of dollars into the city's coffers.

Air New Zealand even staged a special "pink flight" to carry revellers from San Francisco to Sydney in a plane that sported a giant pink feather boa and eyelashes over the cockpit windows as passengers embarked in California.

Sydney - A Swiss-born Muslim scholar who is banned from visiting the United States will be the keynote speaker at a government-funded conference in Australia next week. Government spokesman Laurie Fergusen on Saturday defended the decision to fete Oxford University's Professor Tariq Ramadan, describing the row over his visit as "a storm in a teacup."

The US government has accused Ramadan of providing material support for terrorism.

Amir Ali, who served on the previous government's advisory panel on integrating Muslim Australians, berated Brisbane's Griffith University for hosting a speaker he said tailored his talks to different audiences, alternately soothing and then inciting.

"It seems that these people speak in different languages to different audiences and they don't convey the same message," Ali said.

The Australia/Israel Jewish Affairs Council said Ramadan was "skilled at projecting moderation to Western audiences while engaging in apologetics for various forms of Islamist extremism."

Scholar banned by US to speak here

Richard Kerbaj | March 01, 2008

CONTROVERSIAL Muslim scholar Tariq Ramadan, who was refused entry into the US over alleged links to terror networks, is due to deliver a lecture on Islam at a conference sponsored by the Queensland Government on Monday.

Professor Ramadan - whose grandfather Hassan al-Banna founded one of the world's most radical Islamist movements, the Muslim Brotherhood, in 1928 - will be introduced by federal Labor Parliamentary Secretary for Multicultural Affairs Laurie Ferguson at the Griffith University event, which has drawn $50,000 worth of sponsorship from the Bligh Government.

Muslim and Jewish leaders yesterday expressed concern about Professor Ramadan's second visit to Australia from Europe since 2004, with a former Howard government adviser on Islam, Ameer Ali, urging national security authorities to keep him under close surveillance.

But Mr Ferguson dismissed the US Government's decision to block Professor Ramadan's entry into the country in 2004 - where he was due to take up a lecturing post at Notre Dame University in Indiana - as an "over the top" measure.

Dr Ali said it was a common problem among Arabic scholars such as Professor Ramadan to alter their messages for different audiences.

"It appears that these people speak in different languages to different audiences and they don't convey the same message," he said.

"If he's allowed to go and mix with the local community, then they (authorities) have to monitor what he is saying."

Australia/Israel Jewish Affairs Council executive director Colin Rubenstein also attacked the Swiss-born Professor Ramadan, who lives in Europe, for pandering to Islamic extremists.

"Tariq Ramadan is a problematic figure skilled at projecting moderation to Western audiences, while engaging in apologetics for various forms of Islamist extremism, including terrorist attacks and conspiracy theories about 9/11," he said.

However, Mr Ferguson defended the right of Professor Ramadan, an Oxford University professor of Islamic studies who was named one of the 21st century's great innovators by Time magazine, to speak at the conference in Brisbane.

"You have people with fairly minimal criminal records who aren't allowed in the US," he told The Weekend Australian yesterday.

"I think in some areas America's criteria is a bit over the top ... but there's probably areas where America has got it right and Australia has got it wrong."

Asked if he thought Australia had got it wrong in this instance, he said: "No, I don't."

The US Government found Professor Ramadan donated $940 to two humanitarian foundations in France and Switzerland, which gave money to Palestinian terrorist group Hamas. The academic, who lectured in the US during the Clinton administration and has advised the British Labour Government and Scotland Yard, defended his donations in The Washington Post in 2006.

"My donations were made between December 1998 and July 2002, and the United States did not blacklist the charities until 2003," he wrote. "How should I reasonably have known of their activities before the US Government itself knew?"

Professor Ramadan was refused entry into France in 1995 after he was accused of having links to an Algerian Islamist, but the ban was lifted the following year. He was also banned by Saudi Arabia, Tunisia and Egypt "after he suggested a moratorium on Sharia law, in particular corporal punishment, stonings and beheadings", according to the Guardian newspaper.

He has been accused of playing down terrorist campaigns, including the September 11 attacks and the 2005 London bombings, as "interventions". Security sources have told The Weekend Australian Professor Ramadan will remain under close surveillance.

His visit comes a year after Canadian-born Muslim cleric Bilal Philips was refused entry into Australia to headline a Melbourne conference on Islam after the US Government named him an "un-indicted co-conspirator" in the 1993 World Trade Centre bombing in New York, which killed six and injured 1000.

[White genius makes this scheme (a word that lacks the negative connotation in British English that it has in American) possible; no 59-IQ Abos could have conceived it, let alone executed it.]

Snowy Mountains Scheme

Tumut 3 Power Station

The Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme is one of the most complex integrated water and hydro-electric power schemes in the world. The Scheme collects and stores the water that would normally flow east to the coast and diverts it through trans-mountain tunnels and power stations. The water is then released into the Murray and Murrumbidgee Rivers for irrigation.

The Scheme took 25 years to build and was completed in 1974. More than 100,000 people from over 30 countries came to work in the mountains to make true a vision of diverting water to farms to feed a growing nation and to build power stations to generate electricity for homes and industries.

Sixteen major dams, seven power stations (two underground), a pumping station, 145kms of inter-connected trans-mountain tunnels and 80kms of aqueducts were constructed. Even before the Scheme was completed, it was named as one of the civil engineering wonders of the modern world.

The Scheme is operated and maintained by Snowy Hydro Limited.

Today, Snowy Hydro continues to play a vital role in the growth and the development of Australia's national economy, by diverting water that underwrites over $3 billion in agricultural produce and by generating clean renewable energy.

Snowy Hydro currently provides over 70% of all renewable energy that is available to the eastern mainland grid of Australia, as well as providing fast response power to light up the morning and evening rush hours of Sydney, Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne and Adelaide.

jewsign Jews in Oz say they are watching their backs from evil "anti-Semites."

MELBOURNE Jews say they will no longer turn the other cheek as figures reveal more anti-Semitic attacks across the city.

The Australia/Israel & Jewish Affairs Council logged 178 complaints of anti-Semitic incidents, including verbal attacks and hate mail, last year.

The figure has almost tripled since 1998.

Police acknowledge there is a serious problem, but say they have received only seven reports of anti-Semitic incidents in 14 months.

But Jeremy Jones, who coordinates the OAJAC database, says most incidents are not reported.

Anti-Defamation Commission Inc chairman John Searle said Jewish people were suffering on a weekly basis.

"We have people in cars yelling abuse as they drive past synagogues, others being spat on as they walk to the synagogue," Mr Searle said.

Some Jews had become so fearful they were disguising themselves.

"I find it deplorable that in Australia in 2008 you can have a Holocaust survivor telling their grandchildren not to wear a skull cap -- but it's happening," he said.

Melbourne Holocaust Museum chief Bernard Korbman said unrest in the Middle East usually increased anti-semitic violence in Melbourne.

"But the Jewish community are a vibrant, resilient and proud people and we will never be victims again," he said.

Holocaust survivor Abe Goldberg said he refused to play victim to anti-semitic ignorance.

Mr Goldberg said he had taught his son and grandson to face anti-semitic vigilantes head on.

"I have always believed you can run but they will always catch you so it is better to stand there and fight for your belief," he said. "And I expect my son and grandson to do just that.

Default FDB psycho killer faces life without parole

When this antifa pyscho was arrested in Bulgaria the loonies over at FDB claimed him as one of their own.
Well, soon they will be able to send him fan mail . . . for the rest of his life.
Look at the facial structure and the eyes in the pix at the end of the link.
The face looks like that of a cave man and the eyes are clearly those of a psychotic.

Palfreeman set for life for murder
March 24, 2008
A SYDNEY man is set to spend the rest of his life in a Bulgarian jail with evidence he wilfully attacked a group of university students with the aim of killing them.
Former St Ignatius' Riverview College student Jock Palfreeman was charged late last year with murder after he allegedly stabbed to death a 20-year-old Andrei Monov and injured three other men in a fight on a public street.
The 21-year-old Palfreeman had claimed he was going to the aid of a gypsy who was being beaten up on a street in the capital Sofia, when he himself was set upon by a group of youths.
Prosecutors yesterday revealed CCTV footage showed there was no fight prior to the attack by Palfreeman and no case for self defence.

jewsign Australian billionaire facing new charges

A Jewish Australian businessman and philanthropist will go back to court to face perjury charges.

Richard Pratt is expected to appear in court next month to defend himself against charges he gave false and misleading evidence during an investigation into a price-fixing scandal in 2005.

Pratt, 73, the chairman of Visy Industries, a recycling company with 3,000 employees in America, was fined a record $34 million last year in Australia's biggest cartel case.

He is now facing new charges brought Thursday by a consumer watchdog, although lawyer Leon Zwier says his client will "vigorously defend" himself.

Some Jewish groups have rushed to Pratt's defense. The Peres Center for Peace and the Ajax Football Club, with which Pratt has had a long association, both issued statements in support of
the embattled businessman this week.

Last year, a transcript of a conversation between two executives of Amcor, the firm that colluded with Visy, revealed deep-seated anti-Semitic sentiments, prompting Amcor to issue an apology.

Pratt, dubbed the "cardboard king," resigned this week from the presidency of the Carlton Football Club and returned his Order of Australia award given in February.

Australia's fourth-richest man, he is valued at more than $5 billion. His family foundation annually donates tens of millions of dollars to charities, mainly in Australia and Israel. Most recently, it funded the Park of the Australian Soldier in Beersheba for $3 million.

Pratt faces a maximum of four years in jail if convicted. He and his parents escaped prewar Poland in 1938.

jewsign Outrageous: JCCV call for police meeting after Yom Kippur fine

THE Jewish Community Council of Victoria (JCCV) has requested an urgent meeting with Victoria Police to discuss Yom Tov road safety issues.

The need for a meeting arose following a report in The AJN that a Jewish woman was fined on Yom Kippur for crossing at a red pedestrian light on her way to synagogue.

Despite explaining to the local police officer that her religion prevented her from pressing the button, she was still issued with a ticket and her son was made to press the button. The fine was later revoked.

With more Jewish holidays coming up next Tuesday and Wednesday, the JCCV has asked police leadership to advise them on what can be done in the short term to prevent the same situation occurring again.

The JCCV has also asked police to consider extending automatic pedestrian crossings beyond St Kilda East – where they are currently located – into Caulfield, St Kilda and Bentleigh.

Meanwhile, the community’s rabbis met with senior police and local officers on Thursday at a Succot party hosted by Melbourne Hebrew Congregation.

jewsign J'New course on Kabbalah

Brisbane to Join Worldwide Debut of Soul Maps - Innovative Course to Provide Kabbalah-based Tools for Emotional Happiness

Critically-Acclaimed Series Brings Wisdom of the Kabbalah to the General Public

Let’s face it: People are complicated. We have a warm, sensitive side and a wild, primitive side. We can act caring and nurturing one moment, and self-centered and aggressive the next. Making sense of our thoughts and emotions is not easy, and people often feel conflicted and overwhelmed.

“People struggle every day to understand themselves and find inner peace,” says Chanoch H Sufrin of the Jewish Educational Institute - Chabad Brisbane. “They’ve been through every book in the self-help aisle and they visit their therapist or confide in friends to sort through their feelings.” Concludes Sufrin, “What people really need is a guide to help them navigate their own complexity, and the Kabbalah has provided these tools for centuries.”

This November, the Rohr Jewish Learning Institute (JLI) is proud to launch Soul Maps, an ancient yet innovative approach to human psychology. Soul Maps is structured as a six-step program, utilizing tools from the Kabbalah to help participants understand themselves and find inner contentment. The course is based on Tanya, an eighteenth-century book that made the previously esoteric teachings of Kabbalah practical, relevant, and accessible.

Importantly, Soul Maps is designed for people at all levels of Jewish knowledge, and participants don’t have to have any prior experience or background in Jewish learning to attend and enjoy this course. Additionally, all JLI courses are open to the entire Jewish community and people do not need to be a member of any particular synagogue or temple in order to attend.

This exciting new course will be offered at the Brisbane Synagogue Memorial Hall for six Monday starting 3 November.

Soul Maps is no quick-fix. Participants won’t learn how to become a perfect person in six easy lessons,” explains Chanoch Sufrin. “We won’t wave a magic wand and make people’s troubles disappear.” “However,” concludes Sufrin, “Students will walk away with concrete tools they can utilize every day to resolve guilt, conflict, and confusion, and find their inner nucleus of joy, purpose, and direction.”

Members of the media are invited to attend a local class and/or interview local course facilitators in advance. Interviews with national facilitators and course creators can also be arranged, upon request. To arrange an interview, to visit an upcoming class, or for further information, please contact Chanoch H Sufrin, [email protected], 07 3342 6326.

The JLI’s classes have been attended by nearly 75,000 people since its creation in 1998.

Every course offered by JLI is synchronized, so that lessons are offered concurrently in all locations. This unique feature has helped to create a true global learning community.

Please visit www.myJLI.com for up-to-date information about Soul Maps.

JLI courses are presented in Brisbane under the auspices of the Jewish Educational Institute - Chabad Brisbane.

jewsign Leading Australian Jew pleads guilty to perjury

A former Australian federal judge and high-profile Jewish community member pleaded guilty to perjury.

Marcus Einfeld, a former executive member of the New South Wales Jewish Board of Deputies, councilor of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry and patron of the Australian Association of Jewish Holocaust Survivors and Descendants, faces a maximum jail term of 10 years for making a false statement under oath after pleading guilty on Oct. 31. He also faces 14 years for intending to pervert the course of justice.

Einfeld had testified in court that others, including an Australian woman in America whom he knew was already dead, were driving his car on four occasions when it was booked for traffic offenses between 1999 and 2006. Einfeld was trying to avoid paying a $50 traffic fine. He will be sentenced Feb. 25.

Einfeld, 69, is the son of the late Sydney Einfeld, a Labor Party member of parliament and New South Wales government minister, as well as the president of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry.

A former president of the Human Rights and Equal Opportunities Commission, Marcus Einfeld was a champion of the left and was named an Australian Living Treasure by the National Trust of Australia in 1997. He was awarded an Order of Australia in 1998 for his promotion of human rights.

Einfeld was involved in the Rule of Law project in the Palestinian territories following the Oslo Accords. The project began to train Palestinian judges and lawyers to help establish Palestinian law.

In 2002 he compared the treatment of asylum seekers in detention centers in Australia to the Nazis, saying the “thuggery” of the guards in Australia was “not much different” to the treatment meted out by SS guards.

Default Thousands rally against Israeli attacks

January 10, 2009 - 6:01AM

More than 2,000 people marched through central Brisbane on Saturday in protest at Israel's incursion of Gaza.

At a rally in the city one of the organisers, who wished to be known only as Abdullah, said the large turnout showed the growing momentum of Australia's opposition movement to Israel's actions.

"This is very positive and a very encouraging turnout," he said.

He said the Israeli government's response to Hamas rockets was disproportionate.

"This is a civilian population of 1.5 million people, and 65 per cent are under the age of 13.

"This is the humanitarian catastrophe that Israel continues to violate."

There was also a protest in Auckland, where demonstrators threw shoes and burned Israeli and US flags in a passionate but generally well-behaved protest.

The 1,000-strong afternoon march in Auckland followed a similar-sized demonstration in Wellington last week and other protests around the world.

In Brisbane, Aboriginal elder Bob Anderson compared the Palestinians' plight to the dispossession of Australia's indigenous peoples.

Jewish peace activist Margot Salom said she was among a small band of Australian Jews who condemn Israel's suppression of the Palestinians.

"I personally believe that an illegally occupied people have the right to resist," Ms Salom said.

Labor backbencher and Member for Moreton Graham Perrett, reminded the crowd that Australian soldiers had shed blood in Gaza during World War I and were there again in World War II.

"Gaza has been turned into a place of madness," he said of the Israeli occupation.

"I've been horrified to read of the death toll since the fighting began, now 800-people-plus, and more than 3,000 people injured."

Mr Perrett backed the United Nations resolution calling for "an immediate, durable and fully-respected ceasefire," and the restoration of UN aid.

"I've been particularly horrified to see schools bombed and children suffering in this conflict," the former schoolteacher said.

The protesters then marched through central Brisbane, chanting and then stopping at the bottom of the Queen Street Mall where they held a minute's silence and released balloons in memory of the civilian casualties.

jewsign Jews pray for Israel

BRENDAN TREMBATH: In Sydney, about 1,500 Australian Jews have prayed for peace and publicly declared their solidarity with Israel.

Some described the war with Hamas as a necessary evil. There was tight security for the meeting at the Central Synagogue.

Karen Barlow prepared this report.

(Jews singing "Prayer for the State of Israel")

KAREN BARLOW: They came to pray for the state of Israel, and for peace in the Middle East, although all those who spoke at the Central Synagogue were united in saying this could not be achieved with Hamas in control of the Gaza Strip.

ELI YERUSHALMI: If we manage to weaken the Hamas this will enable the Palestinian Authority to gain again control over the Gaza and then we can finally start again negotiating peace that we need do badly between our two peoples.

KAREN BARLOW: Eli Yerushalmi is the deputy chef de mission at the Israeli Embassy.

He thanked the Australian Government, Federal Opposition and the wider community for its support and warned that Israel was fighting Islamic fundamentalism for the Western world.

ELI YERUSHALMI: All these organisations want not only want to destroy Israel but also to destroy the West and Western civilisation and everything that we believe in and we must be very, very vigilant against them.

KAREN BARLOW: Speakers spoke of empathy and sympathy for the civilian toll in Gaza.

Robin Margo is the president of the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies.

ROBIN MARGO: For us and the people of Israel, however, war is an evil necessity, not something to be glorified. We pray for the safety of all the people of Israel, men, woman and children of every faith and race. And we pray also, that all innocent people in Gaza, men, women and children of every faith and race may be spared further suffering.

KAREN BARLOW: The president of the Australian Council of Australian Jewry, Robert Goot, also deplores the loss of civilian lives, but said Israel must be allowed to defend itself.

ROBERT GOOT: Regrettably, there is no magic formula for battling evil without harming the innocent.

KAREN BARLOW: People attending the synagogue say they were there to support Israel.

JEWISH PERSON: I think it is unfortunate it is necessary because you have got to protect your people.

JEWISH PERSON 2: I am distressed that so many civilian lives have been lost.

JEWISH PERSON 3: We are showing that we are fairly peaceful but we also realise that a line has got to be drawn is self defence.

BRENDAN TREMBATH: That report from Karen Barlow.

Default Australian Prime Minister: Time for a New World Order

KEVIN RUDD has denounced the unfettered capitalism of the past three decades and called for a new era of "social capitalism" in which government intervention and regulation feature heavily.

In an essay to be published next week, the Prime Minister is scathing of the neo-liberals who began refashioning the market system in the 1970s, and ultimately brought about the global financial crisis.

"The time has come, off the back of the current crisis, to proclaim that the great neo-liberal experiment of the past 30 years has failed, that the emperor has no clothes," he writes of those who placed their faith in the corrective powers of the market.

"Neo-liberalism and the free-market fundamentalism it has produced has been revealed as little more than personal greed dressed up as an economic philosophy. And, ironically, it now falls to social democracy to prevent liberal capitalism from cannibalising itself."

Mr Rudd writes in The Monthly that just as Franklin Roosevelt rebuilt US capitalism after the Great Depression, modern-day "social democrats" such as himself and the US President, Barack Obama, must do the same again. But he argues that "minor tweakings of long-established orthodoxies will not do" and advocates a new system that reaches beyond the 70-year-old interventionist principles of John Maynard Keynes.

"A system of open markets, unambiguously regulated by an activist state, and one in which the state intervenes to reduce the greater inequalities that competitive markets will inevitably generate," he writes.

He urges "a new contract for the future that eschews the extremism of both the left and right".

He mocks neo-liberals "who now find themselves tied in ideological knots in being forced to rely on the state they fundamentally despise to save financial markets from collapse".

He advocates tighter regulation and policing of global finances, and identifies the immediate challenge as restoring global growth by 3 per cent of gross domestic product, the amount it is expected to fall in 2009. Next week, as Parliament resumes, his Government will chip in with a second economic stimulus package.

Mr Rudd commits to keeping budgets in surplus "over the cycle", meaning deficits should be temporary. In a further sign the Government is not contemplating additional tax cuts, which would deliver a permanent hit to revenue, he stresses that stimulus measures have to be paid for when the economy recovers.

Mr Rudd singles out Thatcherism as a culprit, as well as the former Howard government. His essay implicitly attacks the Opposition Leader, Malcolm Turnbull, who this week urged the free market be allowed to dictate commercial property values as he slammed a Government measure to prop them up.

Mr Rudd's essay follows the blast Mr Obama gave Wall Street bankers yesterday for awarding themselves $28 billion in bonuses last year at the same time as they were being bailed out by taxpayers.

In a message to Mr Obama and the US Congress, Mr Rudd counselled against erecting trade barriers. "Soft or hard, protectionism is a sure-fire way of turning recession into depression as it exacerbates the collapse in global demand."

The message was reinforced in Davos yesterday when the Trade Minister, Simon Crean, described the "buy American" provisions of the new Obama stimulus package as "very worrying". "On the face of it, it looks like it contravenes commitments made to the World Trade Organisation," he said.

Default FOX JEWS: Australian Wildfires Could Fuel 'Forest Jihad' Terrorists, Experts Say

Firefighters and homeowners aren't the only ones keenly watching Australia's massive wildfires, responsible for killing at least 173 people in the southern part of the continent.

Terrorism experts suspect Muslim extremists are watching closely, too — and taking note of the devastation.

While Australian authorities have revealed no evidence linking the wildfires to extremists, terrorism experts say the large death toll, the huge swath of destruction and the massive financial blow to the country are proving to Islamic terrorists that arson can be a highly effective — and simple — tool of holy war.

In November, an extremist Web site called on Muslims to launch a "forest jihad" in Australia, Europe, Russia and the United States. The posting, which quoted imprisoned Al Qaeda terrorist Mustafa Setmariam Nasar, said setting forest fires was legal under "eye-for-an-eye" Islamic law.

"Scholars have justified chopping down and burning the infidels' forests when they do the same to our lands," the posting read.

The author of the posting indicated that Nasar — also known as Abu Musab Al-Suri — was urging terrorists to use sulfuric acid or gasoline to start the fires.

"Forest fires track well with the latest discussion trends seen in the Al Qaeda forums — easy to do, big impact, low security risk, high media coverage," said Al Qaeda expert Jarret Brachman.

"We've seen these kinds of appeals for action, be it setting fire to forests in Australia, to creating oil slicks on mountain roads in Europe, to poisoning water supplies and driving buses off bridges in the United States.

"The fact is that the Al Qaeda ideology is starting to branch out to more of an 'anyone, anywhere, anytime, anyhow' approach."

Brachman, author of "Global Jihadism: Theory and Practice," said "forest jihad" fits well in the growing interest among terrorists to establish "Al Qaeda armies of one."

"Could [militants] do this? Yes," said Steve Emerson, executive director of The Investigative Project on Terrorism. "It wouldn't be difficult, in the same way that terrorists could poison stored food supplies."

Perhaps more troubling, Emerson said, is that there is very little authorities can do to prevent terrorists from setting deadly wildfires.

"It would be absolutely impossible to protect against," he said. "Airport parameters are hard enough to protect. Imagine trying to protect something 100,000 times as big."

Neil Livingstone, chairman and CEO of Executive Action LLC, an international consulting firm, said terrorists could claim responsibility for the Australian inferno even if they had nothing to do with it.

"That may be something that they try to do," Livingstone told FOXNews.com. "Terrorists may well try to pile on, if you will, and say this is their moving hand and that they have unseen agents that are responsible for this. But you can bet that would produce a hell of a backlash against the Muslim population in Australia."

If extremists did have had a hand in the wildfires, Emerson said, it would be "very disturbing."

"It would indicate a new area of jihadist attacks, that is, attacking natural resources," he said. "And given the devastation of these fires, it certainly could instill new terror ideas in other areas like the food supply chain or in the environmental realm."

Nonetheless, he said, the majority of terrorists are likely seeking ways to create the most destruction with the least amount of effort. A wildfire doesn't yield "as much fruit" as an inner-city bombing, he said.

But Brachman said the "Al Qaeda armies of one" approach has several benefits for terrorists, including more overall acts of violence and additional opportunities to become involved in new geographical areas. It also means less operational control for Al Qaeda's senior commanders, he said.

"We're definitely going to see more of calls for these kinds of operations in the future," he said. "The question that American security professionals and first responders will have to wrestle with is whether anyone will be answering these calls."

Default Activists boycott Israeli chocolatier Max Brenner

PALESTINIAN solidarity activists launched a campaign last week targeting Israeli-owned chocolate franchise Max Brenner as part of a growing international movement to boycott Israeli products.

A handful of protestors took up positions outside the Max Brenner outlet in the Sydney CBD near Wynyard Station on February 12 during peak hour.

The protest group distributed leaflets urging people to boycott Israeli goods, in particular Max Brenner.

“[Max Brenner] is not a chocolatier that deserves our support. Choose an alternative to Max Brenner and apply the pressure on Israeli goods that support war crimes and occupation,” the leaflet said.

The leaflet also criticised a section found on the website of Strauss-Elite -– owners of international Max Brenner stores and one of the largest food corporations in Israel -– for expressing support for Israeli soldiers.

Yael Kaminski Weiler, the general manager of Max Brenner Australia, declined to comment on the boycott incident itself, but told The AJN that Max Brenner “does not mix chocolate with politics”.

NSW Jewish Board of Deputies CEO Vic Alhadeff said accusing Israel of apartheid “falsifies both South African and Israeli history, and accusing Israel of war crimes is a gross misrepresentation of what occurred in Gaza”.

“The call for a boycott of Israeli products is therefore immoral and will be ignored by all who desire peace and are in touch with the facts,” said Alhadeff.

Activists involved with the Gaza Defence Committee and the boycott working group stated on various websites that they will form “pickets” outside Max Brenner every Thursday afternoon.

The group also plans to take the boycott case to unions and universities.

jewsign Jews rail against Khatami visit

Melbourne's Jewish community has resigned its membership of La Trobe University's Centre for Dialogue after discovering that former Iranian president Mohammed Khatami has been invited to speak there on March 26.

In a letter sent March 12, John Searle, president of the Jewish Community Council of Victoria (JCCV) told the center's director, Prof. Joseph Camilleri that "…it is not possible for the Victorian Jewish Community to participate in an organization ostensibly committed to dialogue, when it hosts the former president of Iran, a man whose views on the State of Israel are clearly inimical to true dialogue and peace."

Khatami, who was president of Iran from 1997 to 2005, is considered by many to be a more reform-minded leader than the incumbent Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, but his feelings towards Israel are similarly aggressive.

Last year, he called Israel "an old, incurable wound on the body of Islam, a wound that really possesses demonic, stinking, contagious blood."

Two years ago Ahmadinejad sparked controversy when he spoke at Columbia University where he refused to acknowledge the Holocaust.

But according to the Center for Dialogue's announcement, Khatami's public lecture at La Trobe will be far less contentious.

The keynote address will focus mostly on the role of dialogue between cultures, based on Khatami's own theory "Dialogue Among Civilizations" which he introduced to the United Nations in 2001.

On behalf of JCCV, Searle also declined an invitation from the Anglican diocese of Melbourne, who will be hosting Khatami for morning tea.

"While [Khatami] may spout pious words of coexistence, his actions certainly belie them. Frankly archbishop, our community finds it inconceivable that the Anglican diocese would choose to host such a man or even to meet with him," Searle wrote to Archbishop Philip Freier.

Searle asked the archbishop to reconsider hosting Khatami and reiterated that, "…a person with this track record could not have a commitment to honest dialogue nor to peace."

Default Aussie regime to reprogram toddler brains into colorblindedness

Quote:
...The April 2009 draft Early Years Learning Framework wants teachers to make under-fives:

* Contribute in a meaningful way to reconciliation, including flying the Aboriginal flag and inviting elders to give talks.

* Use "social inclusion puppets" and "persona dolls" to explore exclusion and ethical issues.

* Challenge and resist bias and discrimination.

* Take action in unfair situations and learn to act when injustice occurs.

* Assess and act on power dynamics as they get older...

jewsign Poor Jews whine that they are not respected on university campus

LA TROBE University Vice Chancellor Professor Paul Johnson and senior university officials have pledged to make the university campus a more welcoming place for Jewish students.

Prof Johnson, student services director Michael Torney and equity and student support services director Gary Thomas met with Rabbi Yankel Rapp from Merkos on Campus on Monday, June 29.

Rabbi Rapp shared his concerns with the university leaders about aggressive anti-Israel and anti-Jewish sentiment on campus. He said the behaviour of some students demonstrated intolerance and a lack of respect towards their Jewish peers.

The rabbi said Prof Johnson believed students learnt more effectively when they were in a happy and positive environment, and incidents where students burst into lecture halls denouncing the Israeli government and its defence forces were unacceptable.

"It was a very successful meeting," Rabbi Rapp said. "It was a fantastic outcome."

To help Jewish students feel more at home on the Bundoora campus, Torney urged Rabbi Rapp to build up the La Trobe branch of the Australasian Union of Jewish Students (AUJS). He also offered the use of an on-campus office and chaplaincy facilities to Merkos on Campus.

"I believe we achieved a big thing here," Rabbi Rapp said.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the rabbi presented the vice chancellor with a copy of a book about the seven Noachide laws, written by Melbourne-based rabbi and academic Shimon Cowen.

AUJS Victoria president Stefan Oberman said Jewish La Trobe students have also approached him with concerns. He said AUJS had also been trying to address the matter and had approached the student union and held information sessions at lunch times.

Oberman also praised Rabbi Rapp. "We support the work he is doing, we need all the help we can get."

Rabbi Rapp requested the meeting with La Trobe leadership after Jewish students told him they had felt intimidated by pro-Palestinian groups on campus.

They reported being told that Zionism was wrong by the groups, which also accused Israel of serious crimes. They spoke of students bursting into science classes and delivering impromptu speeches against Israel and its citizens.

Default Jewish lawmaker’s home vandalized

Neo-Nazi graffiti was painted on the house of a senior Jewish politician in Australia.

The numbers “88,” which neo-Nazis use as shorthand for “Heil Hitler,” were found Saturday on the Sydney home of New South Wales Treasurer Eric Roozendaal, according to a report in the Sydney Morning Herald.

Roozendaal, whose grandfather died in Auschwitz, refused to comment about the graffiti.

Police are investigating the vandalism, which some believe has a connection to the far-right Australia First party. But Australia First leader Jim Saleam said his organization had nothing to do with the incident.

'It has been done by provocateurs, if it has not been done by criminal groups,'' Saleam told the Herald newspaper.

Roozendaal, a Labor Party lawmaker, secured a deal last month to block any Labor Party preferences to Australia First at the next state election. Roozendaal and Saleam have been longtime adversaries.

A Roozendaal spokesman said he ''will not be intimidated and will continue to speak out against groups preaching hatred and division,” the Herald reported.
