Default Jury in Lane County murder trial hears grim details of crime

April 23, 2016

Jurors in a Lane County capital murder trial learned Friday how investigators found the dismembered remains of a 22-year-old Eugene man whose car was used as a getaway vehicle in a bank robbery hours after he was slain.

Two Lane County sheriff’s deputies testified in A.J. Scott Nelson’s trial that they followed a trail of visual clues to the burial site on Aug. 8, 2012, five days after Celestino “Tino” Gutierrez Jr.’s parents had told Eugene police their son had gone missing.

The jury on Friday also viewed photographs of Gutierrez’s body parts and other items that prosecutors allege Nelson and a second man, David Ray Taylor, buried at the site as part of their attempt to cover up the plot.....

Default Mistaken death ruling in Vallejo native’s homicide blamed for lack of press coverage

04/23/16

Vallejoans Shirley and Troy Martin say they understand some of the reasons their daughter’s homicide didn’t make the news, but that doesn’t make it any easier to take.

Vallejo native Lynn Marie Martin, 54, died in her San Pablo home Feb. 23, 2015, but authorities didn’t immediately realize her death was a homicide. The Martins and the case prosecutor said they figure that delay is one reason the media didn’t pick up the story.

At first, police said Lynn Martin’s death was likely from natural causes, officially ruling the cause unknown, Senior Deputy District Attorney Paul Graves said.

The suspect, Mark Anthony Carr, 27, was an acquaintance from two doors down and who police believe was involved in the death of a Hercules man during an attempt to kill another woman. That woman was strangled during a home invasion, but survived, Graves said.

Graves said that in that case, police found a middle-aged Asian woman inside a house with plastic over her face. Officers removed the plastic and rushed the woman to a hospital in critical condition. The man, Leroy Sandoval, 58, was then found dead in the home’s garage with his head covered in plastic packing tape.

Default Niggers were too scared to go outside because of racist threats

Published on Apr 23, 2016

Another hoax. The former leader of a black student group at Kean University tweeted anonymous threats against fellow black students last fall because she wanted more people to attend a rally on racial injustice, according to prosecutors.

Kayla McKelvey, 25, pleaded guilty Monday to creating a false public alarm. State prosecutors will recommend that McKelvey be sentenced to 90 days in jail and pay restitution of about $82,000 to cover the costs of the police response and heightened security at Kean after the threats.
According to prosecutors, McKelvey tweeted threats from a campus library because she wanted more people to attend the Nov. 17, 2015, rally on racial issues. She then returned to the rally to tell people about the threats.

Default Judge: Murder suspect's statements can be used as evidence

April 22, 2016

A 2013 double homicide suspect's police statements can be used as evidence in his trial, despite a forensic psychologist's testimony that he is mentally handicapped, a Thibodaux judge ruled Thursday.

Traveyon Blackledge, 21, of Thibodaux, is charged with second-degree murder in the shootings of Nikki Landry, 41, of Larose, and Harry Lefort, 54, of Cut Off. Their bodies were found Sept. 22, 2013, in Landry's apartment.

Blackledge's father, Toronzo Thompkins, 37, of Raceland, is accused of ordering his son and Jerrard Major Sr., 37, of Raceland, to kill Landry. She was a confidential informant set to testify in his cocaine distribution trial.

Dr. Marc Zimmerman, a Baton Rouge forensic psychologist who evaluated Blackledge in September 2014, testified that the defendant got nine of 10 geometric figures correct when copying them. But when drawing from memory, he got only one correct.

Zimmerman said Blackledge's IQ is 49, indicating an intellectual disability, and all his scores on one test were within a child's range. He reads at a first-grade level, and his sentence comprehension is even lower.

Default Malian Man Gets 25 Years for Diplomat's Death

April 26, 2016

BROOKLYN (CN) — A Malian national was sentenced to 25 years in prison on Tuesday for fatally carjacking a U.S. diplomat in Niger in 2000.
Alhassane Ould Mohamed, also known as Cheibani, got his sentence from U.S. District Judge William Kuntz II in Brooklyn Federal Court after standing trial for fatally carjacking an embassy worker in Naimey, Niger.
Mohamed, 46, and another man came at William Bultemeier with a pistol and an AK-47 while he and a colleague tried to enter his state-issued, white SUV after dining at a restaurant on Dec. 23, 2000, according to prosecutors.
The gunmen reportedly demanded his keys and then shot him. They then sped off in the SUV, prosecutors say.......

Default Mobile man represents himself in capital murder trial

April 26, 2016

Carlos Edward Kennedy, who was previously convicted of killing Zoa White in 2010, began representing himself Tuesday morning in a retrial for the crime.

White, a 69-year old retired real estate agent and aide to former Governor Bob Riley, was found in her Springhill Avenue home in June 2010. Her head was covered in blood and her nightgown had been pulled up to expose her nude body, according to a responding officer's testimony.

Kennedy was sentenced to death by lethal injection as a result of an initial trial in 2013, presided by former Judge Joseph "Rusty" Johnston. He is charged with capital murder, as the prosecution has also accused him of breaking into White's home while committing an act of murder and rape.

Johnson did not grant Kennedy an opportunity to defend himself after Kennedy expressed he would not cooperate with any court-appointed attorneys.

When an appeals court overturned Johnston's ruling and mandated that Kennedy get a chance to act as his own representation in 2015, a retrial was set......

Default Judge to consider youthful offender status for Lake Cyrus murder suspects

Judge David Hobdy, Jr

April 26th 2016

HOOVER, AL - The first of two youthful offender hearings will take place on Tuesday afternoon for the teenage suspects in the January murder of a Hoover husband, father and Iraq War veteran Mike Gilotti.

Attorneys for Charleston Wells, 16, and Ahmad Johnson, 17, have requested youthful offender status for their clients.

Wells appears before District Judge David Hobdy at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Johnson appears on Wednesday at 9 a.m.

Veteran defense attorneys say convincing a judge to grant youthful offender status in a high profile case like this is a long shot.

Wells and Johnson face multiple charges concerning vehicle break-ins and an armed robbery in other jurisdictions.

If the judge were to grant youthful offender status:
•Court records would be closed to the public
•A judge, not a jury would issue a decision on the evidence in the case
•If convicted, youthful offender status would limit incarceration to a maximum three years in an adult prison

Earlier this month, a district judge in Birmingham dismissed attempted murder charges against Wells and Johnson dealing with a January 5th early morning shooting in a Fultondale subdivision.

Police and prosecutors say the incident was similar to the January 6th shooting which killed Gilotti, a 33-year-old husband and father of two.

Murder charges have been filed against Wells, Johnson, 16-year-old Darrian Bryant and 19-year-old De'Ron Lucas in Gilotti's death. Police say the four were in the Hoover subdivision trying to find unlocked vehicles when they saw Gilotti leave his home shortly before 5 a.m. on his way to the gym.

Officers found 24-year-old Shannan Gordon's body Saturday morning, after someone reported seeing it near the woods at the intersection of Pecan and Willie Vause Roads.

Police say the woman died from stab wounds.

While investigating, officers say they followed the bloody trail to an apartment at the nearby Savannah Crossing Apartment Complex.

While there, they spoke with a woman in the apartment who said her brother, Leon Woodberry, was acting strange, cleaning blood from the apartment with bleach, and had gotten into a fight with someone.

Police say they found women's clothing and a purse, along with a man's shirt with blood on it in the apartment complex's dumpster, as well as a knife in his kitchen that was wet from attempts to clean it.

Woodberry, 30, confessed to stabbing Gordon, a Tallahassee native, and told investigators the two had struggled over a knife.
