Default Jury Finds Riddle Guilty Of Assault

Detroit Political Consultant Rejects Plea Deal

POSTED: Friday, April 16, 2010
UPDATED: 4:21 pm EDT May 5, 2010
DETROIT -- A jury has found Detroit Political Consultant Sam Riddle guilty of felonious assault and felony firearms possession.Riddle was released on bond. He will be sentenced May 26.Jurors began deliberating about 10:45 a.m. Wednesday, after prosecutors and defense attorneys gave their closing arguments.

Assistant prosecutor Rebecca Camargo started the closing arguments by saying that the victim in the case, Riddle's ex-girlfriend and former state Rep. Mary Waters, does not waver in her account of what happened on Dec. 21, 2009.Waters testified on Tuesday that Riddle was drunk when she came home and found him in bed with another woman. She said he pulled out a shotgun from underneath the bed and pointed it at her. "'Get the (expletive) out!' I said, 'Get the (expletive) out!'" said Camargo as she repeatedly racked a black 12-gauge shotgun to demonstrate her argument. "And she did, and that is why we are here. Did any of you feel that chill down your spine as I racked that gun?"Riddle's attorney Mark Mandell said that Camargo can rack the shotgun all she wants, "Rack, rack, rack that shotgun all day," but that doesn't make his client a guilty man, he said.

The woman Riddle was allegedly found in bed with, 30-year-old Takeisha Washington, also took the stand Tuesday and said there was no sexual relationship between her and Riddle. She said Riddle was helping her get the city to tear down an abandoned house in her childhood neighborhood, and that the two had just been talking when they both fell asleep in the bed. She said Riddle had been so intoxicated he wet his pants. She also testified that Riddle never had a shotgun in his hands."No gun, no crime, not guilty. Thank you," Mandell said in ending his argument.During rebuttal Camargo said Waters may be many things but she is not a liar.Riddle was charged with felonious assault and felony firearms possession.Prosecutors offered a deal to Riddle on Friday to plead guilty on the assault charges, in exchange for dropping the felony firearms charges. If he had accepted the plea deal, he would have faced up to 17 months in prison."I will go to trial because I am innocent. I will be in trial because the prosecutor has blown this way out of proportion, and I will win in trial because the prosecutor doesn't have a leg to stand on," said Riddle.

Earlier this month, Riddle was sent to jail for violating the terms of his probation, which included having no contact with Waters. The judge said Riddle violated the terms of his probation in a domestic violence case by having a phone conversation with Waters, which she admits to initiating.

Waters was called into court about the bond violation, but Judge Gregory Bill decided not to hold her in contempt of court.Riddle's attorneys had claimed it made it difficult to defend him in a federal bribery case where Waters and Riddle are co-defendants."

There certainly has to be additional contact allowed here for them to prepare for their federal court case," said Bill Friday.Bill said Riddle and Waters can only have contact in the presence of their attorneys in order to prepare for their upcoming trial. The two are accused of taking bribes in exchange for helping a pawnshop move and expand in Southfield. They are scheduled to go to trial in that case in June.

Default California Rep. Waters may face fall ethics trial

Quote:
A second House Democrat, Rep. Maxine Waters of California, could face an ethics trial this fall, further complicating the election outlook for the party as it battles to retain its majority. People familiar with the investigation, who were not authorized to be quoted about charges before they are made public, say the allegations could be announced next week. The House ethics committee declined Friday to make any public statement on the matter.
Waters, 71, has been under investigation for a possible conflict of interest involving a bank that was seeking federal aid. Her husband owned stock in the bank and had served on its board.

Quote:
NEW YORK — Friends and political allies of embattled Rep. Charlie Rangel are noticeably quiet after the disclosure that the 40-year House veteran and dean of the New York congressional delegation may face serious charges from a House ethics panel.
Rangel, 80, told reporters Friday that he looked forward to a public airing of the charges next week and fully intended to fight to clear his name. But national Democrats, already nervous about the party’s prospects in the November election, had little to say publicly about Rangel’s plight.
It’s a particularly vexing situation for New York Democrats, who know Rangel well and have benefited for years from his campaign contributions and his advocacy for the state — particularly on the powerful Ways and Means Committee, which he chaired before stepping down from the post last March.

To criticize Rangel would look politically expedient for these Democrats and could risk the ire of the Congressional Black Caucus and the many influential black activists in New York. But staying silent leaves them vulnerable to Republican charges that the party is not sufficiently tough on the ethical lapses of its members.
Another issue for many of New York’s top officeholders: a scheduled Aug. 11 campaign fundraiser for Rangel at the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan, hosted by outgoing Gov. David Paterson and chaired by most of the state’s Democratic party elite, including Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, the Democratic candidate for governor, and Sens. Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, a Republican-turned-independent, was listed as a co-host as well.
Asked at a Buffalo event Friday about Rangel, Gillibrand said she still backed him and planned to attend the fundraiser.
"I support the chairman. He’s done a great deal of good for this country," Gillibrand said, which drew a blast from Republican David Malpass, who is seeking the GOP nomination to challenge Gillibrand.
"By affirming her support for the ethically challenged congressman, Sen. Gillibrand has once again chosen insider Washington politics over the interests of New Yorkers," Malpass said.
Few others were willing to weigh in on Rangel’s behalf.
In an e-mail message, Bloomberg spokesman Jason Post said the mayor’s position had not changed and he would reserve judgment until evidence was presented by the ethics panel. A spokesperson said Schumer was still planning to attend the Rangel fundraiser, while a Cuomo spokesman said the campaign schedule had not been mapped out far enough yet to know whether Cuomo would be able to attend.
Also at issue for some New York Democrats: contributions Rangel has made to their campaign committees, which Republicans say are tainted.
Rangel made the vast majority of his contributions in the 2008 campaign cycle, before the ethics committee concluded he had broken House rules by accepting corporate donations for travel to the Caribbean earlier this year. After that, many Democrats gave Rangel’s money to charity.
Two New York House Democrats, Dan Maffei and Tim McMahon, have said they will keep the money they’ve received from Rangel.
"I talked to him last night, and his position hasn’t changed. We’re not going to give up money that came from the past," Maffei spokeswoman Abigail Gardner said.
http://news.bostonherald.com/news/us...osition=recent
Quote:
Rangel has been stubbornly resistant to striking a deal that would avoid a public trial by the ethics committee. Proud and defiant, he so far has given no sign that he intends to do anything other than fight the charges, despite the desire of House leaders to avoid such a spectacle.
President Obama added to the pressure on Rangel to yield when he told CBS News on Friday: "I think Charlie Rangel served a very long time and served his constituents very well. But these allegations are very troubling, and, you know, he's somebody who is at the end of his career, 80 years old. I'm sure that what he wants is to be able to end his career with dignity, and my hope is that that happens."
The ethics committee, which has often been slow to move against fellow House members, now has outlined a serious, 13-count case against Rangel that will have to play out over the next few months unless the congressman changes his mind.
Now there is another ethics case brewing, this involving another senior Democrat and member of the Congressional Black Caucus, Rep. Maxine Waters (Calif.). The Waters case involves her actions in helping banks, including one in which her husband had a financial interest, receive federal bailout funds. Politico reported Friday night that, like Rangel, she too has decided to fight the charges and proceed to a public trial.

Default Feds investigating Jesse Jackson Jr

Jesse Jackson Jr. Investigation: Feds Target Congressman's Finances In New Probe

The snowballing troubles of Jesse Jackson Jr. took a new turn Friday with the revelation that federal investigators have launched a probe into “suspicious activity” in the South Shore congessman’s finances.

Focusing on a completely new area of scrutiny for the son of the famed civil rights leader, the investigation is not related to former Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s attempted sale of a U.S. Senate seat, a scandal that has ensnared Jackson in the past, sources told the Chicago Sun-Times.

Rather, the probe — based in the Washington, D.C., FBI field office —is focusing on “suspicious activity” involving the congressman’s finances related to his House seat and the possibility of inappropriate expenditures, the sources said.

The probe was active in the weeks prior to Jackson taking a leave from his U.S. House seat on June 10, a leave his office ultimately attributed to his need for treatment for bipolar disorder, the sources said.

It was unclear whether the investigation involved the congressman’s official House spending account or his campaign finance account. But one source said it was an account monitored by Congress.

All members of the U.S. House receive an allowance to operate offices in Washington and in their districts. The allowances for rank-and-file members ranged from $1.4 million to $2 million in 2010, according to the House website.

Jackson’s congressional spokesman Frank Watkins said he was unaware of any investigation, had no comment and had no immediate way to get a hold of the congressman.

One of Jackson’s attorney’s, Paul Langer, repeatedly said “no comment,” when asked whether Jackson was under investigation related to his finances.

When asked if he was still representing Jackson or if the congressman had retained another attorney, Langer said:

“I can’t even comment on that.”

News of the probe — first disclosed by the Sun-Times — comes as questions increasingly swirl around Jackson’s absence from not only his official duties in Washington, but the campaign trail as the Nov. 6 election nears.

Citing exhaustion, Jackson, 47, stopped working, according to his staff, on June 10. His staff did not make that known until two weeks later.

He went to a clinic in Arizona then to the Mayo Clinic, which released a statement saying he was being treated for a bipolar disorder. Jackson is up for re-election Nov. 6 but has not campaigned since he won the Democratic primary in March.

The Jacksons put their Washington, D.C., home on the market last month at a price of $2.5 million. A campaign spokesman said at the time that the home was put on the market to pay for mounting medical bills. They subsequently took it off the market, saying it was a security issue.

Jackson came under scrutiny after one of his campaign donors approached Blagojevich with a pay-to-play offer regarding the appointment to President Barack Obama’s vacant Senate seat. Jackson has denied any wrongdoing, but that revelation sparked an investigation by a House ethics committee.

Jackson was first elected to Congress in 1995 and boasted of almost never missing a vote until he vanished from public view in June.

That’s when his office announced that he was taking off work to undergo medical treatment for “exhaustion.” Under pressure to reveal more details of his condition from even fellow politicians, Jackson’s office gradually dribbled out more extensive explanations over the course of the summer.

He finally surfaced nearly a month later when Sun-Times columnist Michael Sneed reported he was being treated at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. The clinic revealed Jackson was being treated for Bipolar II depression, “a treatable condition that affects parts of the brain controlling emotion, thought and drive and is most likely caused by a complex set of genetic and environmental factors.”

Jackson returned to his home in Washington, D.C., early last month, but he still has not returned to work. His wife, Ald. Sandi Jackson (7th), recently said he may not return until after the November election, when he is up for another two-year term in the U.S. House.

“I can’t speak to when that’s going to happen or how that’s going to happen,” she said. “I can only say that I will continue to rely on [doctors’] expertise. I would only ask for patience.”

The couple has been loathe to speak to the media.

During a fund-raising event last month, Sandi Jackson called reporters waiting to speak to her outside “jackals.” She went to great lengths to avoid the media that night, waiting inside the darkened, otherwise empty restaurant until the last camera departed before she would exit.

The congressman once was among the more extroverted Chicago politicians, but he has been far more reclusive since his name was first linked to the scandal surrounding Blagojevich almost four years ago.

Jackson friend and campaign contributor Raghuveer Nayak told authorities he approached the then-governor with a lucrative fund-raising offer that could have led to Blagojevich’s appointment of Jackson to Obama’s old Senate seat.

Jackson has denied that version of events, and he was never charged with wrongdoing.

Default Former Negro Mayor of New Orleans Ray Nagin Indicted for Corruptopn, Tax Evasion, Wire Fraud, Bribery, Money Laundering.

Quote:
NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- Former New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin has been indicted on 21 federal corruption charges including wire fraud, bribery and money laundering.

The charges are the outgrowth of a City Hall corruption investigation that already has resulted in guilty pleas by two former city officials and two businessmen.

The counts include wire fraud, bribery, money laundering, filing false tax returns and conspiracy.

Nagin, a former cable television executive, was a political novice before being elected to his first term as mayor in 2002, buoyed by strong support from white voters.

Hurricane Katrina in 2005 elevated Nagin to the national stage, where he gained a reputation for colorful and sometimes cringe-inducing rhetoric.

During a radio interview broadcast in the storm's early aftermath, he angrily pleaded with federal officials to "get every doggone Greyhound bus line in the country and get their asses moving to New Orleans."

In January 2006, he apologized for a Martin Luther King Day speech in which he predicted New Orleans would be a "chocolate city" and asserted that "God was mad at America."

Strong support from black voters helped Nagin win re-election in 2006 despite widespread criticism of his post-Katrina leadership. But the glacial pace of rebuilding, a surge in violent crime and the budding City Hall corruption investigation chipped away at Nagin's popularity during his second term.

Nagin could not seek a third consecutive term because of term limits. Mitch Landrieu, who ran against Nagin in 2006, succeeded him in 2010.

Nagin has largely steered clear of the political arena since he left office. On his Twitter account, he describes his current occupations as author, public speaker and "green energy entrepreneur." He wrote a self-published memoir called "Katrina's Secrets: Storms After the Storm."

Default Feds Conducting Separate Probe Of Jesse Jackson Jr.'s Wife

Quote:
Former Congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr. isn't the only member of his family in trouble with the law. The Chicago Sun Times is reporting that his wife, alderman Sandi Jackson, is the subject of a federal investigation that is probing the couple's use of Jesse's campaign war chest.

A federal financial probe of the once-politically powerful Jesse and Sandi Jackson has evolved into two separate investigations, with federal authorities taking an independent look at former Ald. Sandi Jackson, sources close to the probe told the Chicago Sun-Times.

Included in the scrutiny of Sandi Jackson, who resigned from her 7th Ward aldermanic position last month, is her access and use of her husband's congressional campaign money, including credit card charges, as well as the movement of money from one account to another, sources say.

In his resignation letter, Jesse Jackson Jr. acknowledged a federal probe and indicated his attorneys were working with federal authorities on it. For Sandi Jackson, however, sources cautioned that the feds are still weighing whether charges are warranted and noted that prosecutors do take into account - in a financial probe - charging husband and wife who are also a mom and a dad. The couple has school-aged children.

"They are trying to sort it out right now and trying to figure out exactly what to do with her," said one source close to the former alderman. Sandi Jackson was advised to get a lawyer at least four months ago.

As recently as December, Sandi Jackson was mentioned prominently as a potential candidate to replace her husband in Congress. But the investigation by the feds has scotched those rumors and both husband and wife are now in the crosshairs of the federal prosecutor.

Trenton Mayor Tony Mack Convicted Of Extortion, Bribery
February 7, 2014 8:55 PM

TRENTON, N.J. (CBS/AP) — The mayor of New Jersey’s struggling capital city was convicted of bribery, fraud and extortion Friday, joining a long list of New Jersey mayors guilty of corruption in recent years.

A federal jury found Trenton Mayor Tony Mack and his brother, Ralphiel, participated in a scheme to take money in exchange for helping get approvals to develop a downtown parking garage. The deal was fictitious and part of a government sting operation.

Tony Mack was convicted of official extortion conspiracy, attempted extortion, accepting bribes, mail fraud and wire fraud. Ralphiel Mack was convicted on the extortion and bribery counts but acquitted on the others.

The jury deliberated for one full day before reaching its verdict.

Jurors did not buy Tony Mack’s defense that he was unaware of the nature of the building project and never accepted any bribes. Neither defendant testified during the trial.

Mack has remained in office as head of New Jersey’s capital city since his arrest more than two years ago. With his conviction, he becomes the latest New Jersey mayor to run afoul of the law.

Since 2000, mayors of Newark, Camden, Paterson, Perth Amboy, Hoboken, Passaic, Asbury Park, Orange and Hamilton, among others, have been convicted or pleaded guilty in corruption cases.

In Mack’s case, prosecutors portrayed the mayor as an eager participant in the bribery scheme. They said he agreed to sell city-owned property assessed for well over $200,000 for just $100,000 in exchange for bribes.

Authorities said $54,000 was passed to Joseph “JoJo” Giorgianni — a Trenton restaurant owner and political dealmaker who pleaded guilty in the case last year — in 2011 and 2012 and that an additional $65,000 was agreed on. He was to pass the money to Mack, authorities said.

Giorgianni and the Mack brothers were heard during the trial on secretly recorded phone calls using what prosecutors contended were code words — “cheesesteaks” and “Uncle Remus” to mean cash payments — and that they used them frequently.

A friend of Giorgianni testified that she saw Mack accept cash. Giorgianni didn’t testify but was heard during the trial on numerous wiretaps blustering about his alleged influence with Mack and other city officials.

Ralphiel Mack had $2,500 in his possession at the time of his arrest that had been given to him by Giorgianni. His attorney contended that Ralphiel Mack never intended to pass the money to his brother and instead was going to use it to pay his mortgage.

Senate President Steve Sweeney issued the following statement today regarding the guilty verdict in Mack’s corruption trial:

“It’s a sad day for the people of Trenton. With the city tackling so many difficult issues, they could not afford to have their trust violated by their elected leader.

“Both Democrats and Republicans throughout New Jersey must come together to aid the City of Trenton. Its residents deserve nothing less.”

Boyland blames salary for payola scheme caught on tape
By Selim Algar

William Boyland Jr. leaves Brooklyn federal court after his corruption trial on Wednesday.

Brooklyn Assemblyman William Boyland Jr. groused that his intolerably puny salary all but forced him to pursue payola , according to a surveillance recording played at his corruption trial in Brooklyn federal court Wednesday.

“I mean, we make $79,500 as an Assembly member,” he whined to an undercover agent posing as a businessman during a 2011 meeting at Keens Steakhouse in Manhattan.

“What the hell. That’s maybe my son’s tuition and maybe I pay for some gas, you know?” the pol said before letting out a guffaw.

“Yeah. In this city?” responded the agent.

“Right,” Boyland said. “How the hell are you gonna live off of that?”

Prosecutors allege that Boyland sought to put some beef on his bony earnings by offering political influence to what he thought were local businessmen in exchange for bribes.

He solicited money from undercovers to secure permits for lucrative carnivals and for easy access to properties that could be profitably developed, according to the feds.

Boyland, 43, initially asked a fake carnival promoter for a quick grand to help fund a proposed gospel event in his district, the undercover agent testified Wednesday.

But the requests for cash kept swelling until the undercover was finally asked to cough up $3,000 to finance a dubious bus trip to Albany, according to his testimony.

The agent eventually trekked to Boyland’s Brownsville district office to give him the dough — but was quietly ushered outside by the assemblyman’s father, former Brooklyn political power William Boyland Sr.

In an exchange caught on the agent’s hidden camera, the elder Boyland makes an unseemly cameo.

“Now what does he want?” the agent asks Boyland Sr. about his son.

“I mean, how far can you go?” Boyland Sr. replies.

After settling on the $3,000, the father offers a warning. “All right,” he said. “Just legally, you know, this is against the law, right?”

Boyland Sr. is named as an unindicted co-conspirator in the case against his son.

The carnival promoter testified that he later wrote a letter purporting to be from Boyland Jr. that the politician signed and submitted to state officials on his behalf. “I know that you will look favorably on this application and grant your approval,” the letter read.

The cocky assemblyman — who beat a prior federal corruption rap in 2011 — later told the agent that he has suddenly become irresistible to women after his divorce.

After shuffling through a barrage of texts, Boyland Jr. said “there must have been a memo that went out that I’m not married anymore.”

Boyland eventually hooked up with his chief of staff, Ry-Ann Hermon. She pleaded guilty to taking part in the alleged corruption and is slated to testify against her ex-beau and former boss.

Boyland faces 30 years in prison if convicted.

Indicted NY senator wants trial delayed to seek re-election
By Laurel Babcock and Rich Calder
January 31, 2014 | 1:41pm

Smith – one of the state’s top Democrats – was busted last year in a failed scheme to secure a spot on the Republican line for the mayoral race through bribery.

You can’t campaign from behind bars.

Indicted state Sen. Malcolm Smith wants his upcoming federal fraud and bribery trial pushed back a few months until after the Democratic primary so that the Queens pol can seek re-election.

“In the interest of a fair election, the primary should be before the trial so the voters have the chance to decide on the issues,” Smith’s lawyer Gerry Shargel told reporters Friday.

“Mr. Smith is presumed innocent,” added Shargel, shortly after he asked White Plains federal Judge Kenneth Karas in a court appearance to delay the trail.

Smith – one of the state’s top Democrats – was busted last year in a failed scheme to secure a spot on the Republican line for the mayoral race through the bribery of then-Councilman Dan Halloran (R-Queens) and two other GOP leaders.

However, Mr. Smith’s desire to go to back to Albany at the expense of pushing back the trial isn’t sitting well with the feds – who feel his criminal charges should be decided before voters get to cast their ballots.

“The public has an interest in the way of resolution of these charges,” Assistant US Attorney David Bloom told Karas.

The trial is tentatively set for early June. The state Legislature is currently mulling whether to move this year’s state primaries from September to June to match congressional primaries.

Karas told Shargel to lay out his argument to push the trial back in legal papers and that he’d decide on the motion at a later date.

Shargel said Bloom is wrongfully assuming there will be a conviction.

“I don’t think a conviction is going to happen,” he said.

Whether the trial is pushed back or not, Smith by law would have to relinquish his Albany post if he’s convicted of a felony.

His competition for the Democratic line in his Queens district includes lawyer Munir Avery and Clyde Vanel, a former candidate for City Council and the Assembly — neither of whom have Smith’s name recognition or financial resources.

In November, Joseph “Jay” Savino, the disgraced former boss of the Bronx Republican Party, copped a plea to accepting a $15,000 bribe to let Smith run as a Republican for mayor. He also threw Halloran under the bus, saying Halloran – who is also fighting bribery charges — instigated the entire scheme to boost Smith.

State Representative, Sister Arraigned On Pa. Charges
January 29, 2014 1:16 PM

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A state lawmaker and his sister have been released on their own recognizance after arraignment in what authorities call a ghost worker plot involving his district office.

Thirty-four-year-old Democratic Rep. Jose Miranda and 28-year-old Michelle Wilson are charged with perjury, criminal conspiracy and conflict of interest. A preliminary hearing is scheduled Feb. 4.

Prosecutors allege that he funneled a public salary to his sister through a ghost worker because state ethics rules barred her from being on the payroll.

A grand jury said Wilson received part of the $36,000 annual salary paid to Timothy Duckett. He held the title of legislative assistant but apparently never showed up at district offices, working instead at an auto repair shop.

Miranda and Wilson denied any impropriety to the grand jury.

Paul Winfield

Ex-Vicksburg mayor Winfield sentenced to about 2 years

JACKSON, Miss. —Former Vicksburg Mayor Paul Winfield has been sentenced to just over two years in prison in a federal bribery case.

The U.S. Attorney's Office and Winfield's lawyer said the former mayor was sentenced Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Natchez to 25 months in prison. The sentence will be followed by three years supervised release.

Winfield must report to prison by Jan. 6. He pleaded guilty on Sept. 16.

Court records say Winfield asked an FBI informant for $10,000 while discussing "pre-event disaster contracts" with the city in July 2012 and later took some of the money in two cash payments.

Winfield, a Democrat, completed his first term as mayor this year and lost his re-election bid.

Why, they're just squirrels trying to get a nut. After all, day be oppress and sheeeut.

Black community standards are so low they openly cheered on mulatto corruptocrats like Adam Clayton Powell Jr, equating social predatorialism with sticking it to the man.
