Poll: Most American voters back banning Israel from using U.S. funds to annex land or detain Palestinian children

JUNE 18, 2021 9:50 AM

(JTA) — A majority of U.S. voters endorsed restrictions that would keep Israel from spending U.S. defense assistance to detain Palestinian minors, destroy Palestinian buildings, or annex parts of the West Bank, according to the results of a new poll conducted during the most recent Israel-Gaza conflict.

The poll, conducted by Data for Progress, a progressive polling firm, sought to capture public opinion on a question that is increasingly dividing Democratic lawmakers: whether U.S. aid to Israel should be withheld if Israel does not meet certain conditions. For many years, that opinion has been considered off-limits for politicians, but that has shifted recently with the rise of a progressive left in the Democratic Party.
(...)
Democrats were far more inclined to restrict the aid. Broken down by party, 72% of Democrats, 57% of Independents, and 36% of Republicans supported the bill.

How Naftali Bennett’s kippah stays on his bald head and why it matters

BY BEN SALES JUNE 16, 2021 4:36 PM

(JTA) — Israel’s new prime minister is probably the first one who has stuck a wad of chewing gum to his head right before a public event.

Naftali Bennett, who took office this week, is the first prime minister in the country’s history to regularly wear a kippah, or Jewish ritual head covering. Unlike his secular predecessors, he identifies as a religious Zionist and practices Modern Orthodox Judaism, which requires men to cover their heads.

He’s also bald. That makes it a challenge to keep the small crocheted disc on the back of his head, where it’s traditionally worn. The traditional methods of securing a kippah — bobby pins and metal hair clips — are of no use to Bennett.

Yet it stays on. No matter where Bennett is — in parliament, on the campaign trail, giving a news interview — the kippah is there, mounted on his scalp, or sometimes on the thin layer of buzzed hair that surrounds his bald spot.

Appearing on a comedy talk show in 2013, when he was a freshman lawmaker, Bennett said that he uses a mixture of tape and gravity to keep the kippah on his head.

But once, he recalled, he had to give a speech outdoors in the wind and discovered that he was out of tape. So he took a piece of chewing gum (presumably ABC) and used it to glue the kippah to his head.

As Israeli swimmers took 4th place in an Olympic trial, a TV commentator criticized their country

BY CNAAN LIPHSHIZ JUNE 18, 2021 2:48 PM

(JTA) — Standing poolside in Barcelona, Eden Blecher and Shelly Bobritsky beamed with pride and satisfaction as they struggled to catch their breath.

The two athletes from Israel on Sunday had just clinched the fourth slot in the Women Duet category of the Artistic Swimming Qualification Tournament in that city in Spain, assuring their participation in the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo.

But the commentator who narrated the tournament for TV3, the state broadcaster of Catalonia, the separatist Spanish region whose capital is Barcelona, didn’t focus on their technique or performance.

“Beyond the technical commentary, I’d like to draw attention to the fact that Israel’s international presence is another strategy for whitewash the genocide and violations of human rights that they’re committing against the Palestinian people,” the commentator, swimmer Clara Basiana, said during the live transmission.

I guess this is off topic, but Pissraeli swimmers, just like jews in general, are ugly as hell.

Violence renews on Temple Mount and in West Bank amid escalating tensions between Israel and Gaza

JUNE 19, 2021 2:55 PM

(JTA) — Nine Palestinians were injured during clashes with Israeli police at Jerusalem’s Temple Mount amid escalating tensions on the Gaza border, less than a month after the end of a round of intense fighting between Israel and Hamas.

The clashes on Friday occurred as a crowd of Palestinians exited the Temple Mount, which Muslims revere as the Noble Sanctuary. According to the police, members of the crowd threw rocks at the police officers, who responded by firing sponge-tipped bullets and stun grenades.

In addition, a number of Palestinians were injured in clashes with Israeli soldiers outside an Israeli outpost in the northern West Bank. The soldiers fired tear gas and sponge-tipped bullets in that instance as well.

Torch-carrying Palestinians protest new Israeli settlement in West Bank (VIDEO)

25 Jun, 2021 13:41

Palestinians have marched with torches and used laser pointers to protest a newly-erected settler outpost in the West Bank on Thursday. Several protesters were reportedly hit by rubber bullets.

Palestinians have launched a ‘night disruption’ campaign to protest the installment of Givat Eviatar, a new Israeli Jewish settler outpost near the village of Beita in the Nablus region.

Protesters marched in a torch-lit procession on Mount Sabih, as well as burned tires and flashed lasers at settlers’ homes.

The IDF released a statement to the Israeli media, saying its troops were deployed on site to protect Israeli civilians against a “large number of violent rioters.”

The Palestinian WAFA news agency reported that three Palestinians were wounded by rubber bullets and dozens were hit by tear gas. In a separate report, the agency said that the IDF detained 11 Palestinians, including three from Nablus.

Israeli police clash with Palestinians trying to prevent demolition of Arab-owned shop in East Jerusalem

Israeli security forces have used rubber bullets and tear gas against Palestinians, who were trying to stop the demolition of an Arab-owned shop in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Silwan on Tuesday.

A bulldozer, escorted by police and border guards, arrived outside the Harbi Rajabi’s butcher shop two days after the expiration of the Israeli municipality’s deadline for more than a dozen Palestinian families to demolish their own homes.

The municipality, which wants to develop a park in the area, says the houses were built illegally. But the Palestinians claim that they had no other choice as getting an Israeli construction permit has been made almost impossible for them. They insist that it’s part of a deliberate policy by the Israeli authorities, aimed at driving them out of Jerusalem, which is claimed as their capital by both Jews and Palestinians.

A multi-city ad campaign hopes to fight antisemitism with eye-catching messages. Who is JewBelong for?

BY ELIYAHU KAMISHER JULY 28, 2021 11:51 AM

(J. The Jewish News of Northern California via JTA) — Dozens of hot-pink billboards and transit ads have appeared in major American cities over the last month, referencing the Holocaust and antisemitism.

“We’re just 75 years since the gas chambers. So no, a billboard calling out Jew hate isn’t an overreaction,” reads one. “Being woke and antisemitic is like being a vegan who eats veal,” reads another.

The ads are the brainchild of JewBelong, a New Jersey-based nonprofit whose stated mission is to “rebrand Judaism” with a hip, made-for-social-media bent.
(...)
The $450,000 campaign — which is being branded as “JewBelong or JewBeGone” — first made waves with a massive billboard in New York’s Times Square last month. Now, in addition to New York, it’s focusing on San Francisco, Philadelphia, Washington D.C. and Miami, and the group has plans to expand into other markets before the campaign ends in August.

JewBelong founders Stacy Stuart and Archie Gottesman are longtime marketers who made their names with irreverent and often left-leaning advertisements for Manhattan Mini Storage, a company owned by Gottesman’s family. They started out focusing on low-barrier Judaism, like a Zoom Passover seder and online explainers on marriage and baby names.
(...)
And when it comes to Israel, JewBelong’s views are unequivocal. The organization has aligned itself with staunchly pro-Israel Twitter personalities, including writers Noa Tishby, Eve Barlow and Hen Mazzig, on the front lines of Internet skirmishes over the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and antisemitism. Echoing a common pro-Israel talking point about the right of Israel to defend itself, one of JewBelong’s signs reads, “You didn’t like it when we didn’t defend ourselves. And you don’t like it when we do. Doesn’t leave much wiggle room.”

Co-founder Gottesman is a prominent pro-Israel figure who sits on the board of Democratic Majority for Israel, a lobbying group that pushes Democratic lawmakers to support pro-Israel policies. In a 2018 Twitter post, she wrote, “Gaza is full of monsters. Time to burn the whole place.” She has since apologized for the statement.

JewBelong also awards “Partisan Prizes,” monetary rewards to people who post regularly about antisemitism on social media, inspired by Jewish partisans who resisted the Nazis during World War II. Partisan Prize recipients tend to be vocally pro-Israel, and many advertise Zionism in their bios. Some Partisan Prize recipients have asked not to be publicly recognized by JewBelong because they said the extra attention has also brought them death threats.
https://www.jta.org/2021/07/28/unite...-jewbelong-for

These sick and despicable pieces of garbage openly talk about how they want to commit genocide against the Palestinians, and then they wonder why people are "antisemitic". Unbelievable, folks.

250+ Palestinians injured in clashes with Israeli forces during protest against illegal West Bank settlements (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

30 Jul, 2021 22:22 / Updated 14 hours ago

Some 270 Palestinians were injured in the occupied West Bank as they clashed with Israel Defense Forces troops, who fired tear gas and rubber bullets into crowds protesting Israeli settlements.

Hundreds of Palestinians gathered on Friday in the town of Beit Ummar, northwest of Hebron, to mourn the death of a protester who had been killed by the military a day before.

Shawkat Awad, 20, was shot in the head and abdomen on Thursday during clashes that erupted after the funeral of a 12-year-old Palestinian boy killed by Israeli troops earlier in the week. The mourners carried Awad’s body through the town, with the funeral procession spiraling into new clashes with Israeli soldiers.

IDF accused of ‘covering up’ 6 Palestinian deaths after army probe says ‘lessons learned’ in ‘mistaken’ Gaza shelling – reports

3 Aug, 2021 14:40

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reportedly covered up the killing of six Palestinians, including a baby, after “mistakenly” shelling an area housing Bedouin farmers in an operation in the Gaza Strip during the 11-day war in May.

The incident, which apparently has not received any publicity, was known to the army, according to Haaretz. The paper said the army never reported it, and after a two-and-a-half-month investigation, an IDF spokesman stated only that the artillery unit had “learned professional lessons.”

On the evening of May 13, ahead of the IDF’s launch of ‘Operation Lightning Strike’ to collapse Hamas tunnels in the Strip, heavy artillery fire was directed at “open areas” in the northern portion of the Strip as part of a supposed diversionary tactic to trick the militant group into taking shelter in the tunnels.

Some 500 shells were reportedly fired in the barrage – with no warnings issued to the area’s residents to vacate their homes. The paper reported that the civilians were not warned of the impending attack, “as is customary during combat in Gaza.”

However, some of these shells were fired into the al-Karya compound, an agricultural site near the city of Beit Lahia that, according to Haaretz, “should have never been in the army’s sights.” One shell is alleged to have directly struck the temporary structure where the Abu Daya family lived.

Hezbollah fires 19 rockets at Israel in worst fighting since 2006 war

AUGUST 6, 2021 12:26 PM

(JTA) — Israel and the Lebanese terrorist group Hezbollah are engaged in their heaviest fighting since the 2006 Lebanon War.

On Friday morning, Hezbollah fired 19 rockets at Israel. Ten were intercepted by Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system, and they caused no injuries or damage.

Israel responded with artillery strikes, and videos circulating on social media appear to show Lebanese Druze villagers scuffling with Hezbollah forces transporting a mobile rocket launcher.

This appears to be the first time since 2006 that Hezbollah has openly claimed responsibility for an attack on Israel, according to The Times of Israel. That war between Hezbollah and Israel, which took place 15 years ago in the summer, lasted about a month and claimed the lives of more than 150 Israelis and more than 1,000 people in Lebanon.

Palestinian shot dead by Israeli forces, health ministry says, others injured as clashes erupt in Nablus

6 Aug, 2021 15:58 / Updated 1 day ago

A Palestinian man has died and many more were injured after Israeli troops opened fire on demonstrators protesting against Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, according to the Palestinian health ministry and medics.

On Friday, the Palestinian health ministry confirmed on Facebook that a 38-year-old man it identified as Muhammad Dwaikat had died. The ministry said he had been shot with live ammunition by Israeli troops.

Dwaikat was attending a protest against Israeli settlements when shot, and was rushed to Nablus hospital for treatment. In a number of graphic images shared on social media, a seriously wounded Dwaikat is seen being treated and carried by fellow demonstrators.

Earlier on Friday, the Israeli military said that around 700 Palestinians had gathered around southern Nablus, a Palestinian city in the occupied West Bank. The protest escalated as Palestinians threw rocks and petrol bombs at troops and border police, the Israel Defense Forces said.

When an Israeli snipers bullet strikes a Palestinian child's arm or leg destroying it and resulting in the amputation of the leg or arm this is described as a "clash".

Everywhere else on this planet that is an indictable human rights violation, a war crime. Some would say targeting children like that should result in death as the penalty.

‘Cartoonishly evil’: Israel mocked for seizing chocolate bound for Gaza & claiming the bars fund Hamas

17 Aug, 2021 18:28

Israel has been accused of “acting like a cartoon villain” after it confiscated a shipment of chocolate bars headed for Gaza – alleging that these were part of a network financing Hamas operations.

On Monday, tax authority officials reportedly intercepted the 23-ton shipment as it passed from Egypt into Israel.

The confectionery was apparently being brought into Gaza by two import companies – al-Mutahidun Currency Exchange and Arab al-Sin – which, according to officials, are fronts for Hamas. Both companies were designated as terrorist organizations by the Israel Money Laundering and Terror Financing Prohibition Authority.
