Italy’s Covid-19 death toll is the highest in the world. Yet a leading Italian newspaper has declared the Russian aid a pretext for Putin to send his military into NATO territory, calling it mostly “useless” against the pandemic.

The Covid-19 coronavirus has killed more than 7,500 Italians and infected ten times as many. Intensive-care units in the country are overrun, and the government in Rome has pleaded with foreign powers to provide aid.

Moscow answered the call. Over the weekend, a fleet of nine Ilyushin IL-76 planes touched down at Pratica di Mare Air Base, 30km (18.6 miles) from Rome. One hundred military medics and disease specialists were on board, along with mobile laboratories, disinfection vehicles, test kits, and 600 ventilators, which Italian Ambassador Pasquale Terracciano described as “critically important at this stage of the epidemic.”

For Italian newspaper La Stampa, these are “Russian soldiers free to roam Italy a few steps away from NATO”, and the whole aid package is implied to be a scouting mission to get boots on the ground on alliance territory.

In an article published on Wednesday, the paper declared that “Eighty percent of Russian supplies are totally useless or of little use to Italy.”

Of course, La Stampa attributed that quote to an anonymous political source, ripping a page straight out of the US media’s ‘Russiagate’ playbook.

But why wouldn’t Conte accept the aid, even from a non-NATO power like Moscow? After all, when Italy appealed through the European Union’s Mechanism of Civil Protection for medical supplies earlier this month, not one single EU member state volunteered. France and Germany even slapped restrictions on the export of masks.

The EU left Italy “practically alone against the virus,” former Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini told RT.

With aid from traditional allies absent, it seems that La Stampa would rather Italians die in hospital corridors before they accept a helping hand from the great Satan to the east.

(ANSA) - Rome, March 30 - Italy registered 812 coronavirus deaths on Monday but the data presented by the civil protection department also seemed to back the impression that the spread of COVID-19 here is slowing.

It said 75,528 people in Italy are infected with the coronavirus, 1,648 more than yesterday. Sunday's rise had been more than double that, 3,815.

Up to now 11,591 people have died with the coronavirus in Italy, up 812, compared to Sunday's daily rise of 756.

Europe’s hysterical reaction to emergency measures is evidence of double standards.

BUDAPEST — False claims about a power grab in Hungary are spreading as quickly as the coronavirus.

Like many other European Union countries, Hungary acted swiftly and decisively to contain the epidemic sweeping across Europe. The government declared a state of emergency and proposed a bill — which will go in front of parliament on Monday — to empower the government to pass decrees to protect its citizens.

No sooner had the government acted than critics began to attack Prime Minister Viktor Orbán for exploiting the situation to consolidate his power.

These attacks are, once again, evidence that the some Western European thinkers believe it is their raison d’être to discredit the Hungarian government at every opportunity — a government whose “sin” is that it pursues a coherent, Christian-Conservative policy.

In declaring a state of emergency, Hungary sought to protect the life and health of its citizens and to enable the relevant authorities to take the required measures. We are not alone in having reacted to the epidemic in this way: A number of EU member countries have also taken exceptional measures in response to the rising number of infections.

Political attacks against the Hungarian government are based on an incorrect interpretation, or in some cases intentional distortion, of the contents of the draft bill. Unfortunately, these attacks have also been channeled through the EU institutions and the international community too.

In line with Hungary’s Fundamental Law, any exceptional measures taken by the government during a state of emergency remain in force for 15 days, unless the government — with the authorization of the parliament — extends those measures. The government has requested that authorization in order to extend the measures and adopt new ones as required by the exceptional circumstances.

The bill does not seek to remove democratic checks and balances. It expressly provides the parliament with the power to revoke the authorization — either in general or in the case of specific measures — accorded to the government at any time it sees appropriate. The bill cannot and does not contain any restrictions on the activities of the parliament; therefore the parliament remains perfectly capable of exercising its right of oversight and control.

The authorization that is given to the government is also limited. It may only adopt exceptional measures that are necessary and proportionate in the context of the coronavirus pandemic to protect citizens’ life, health and security, as well as the stability of the national economy. The proposal also guarantees that the measures passed under the state of emergency are not repealed even if the parliament is not be able to convene due to the pandemic. The measures will cease to apply when the state of emergency ends.

Rule of law, of course, is not suspended: All authorities will continue to operate in the constitutional and legal framework applicable.

The hysterical reaction to the government’s measures is an echo of what happened during the migration crisis in 2015, when Hungary decided to defend its borders against an external threat. In doing so, it was also protecting Europe’s borders. But the government was heavily criticized for the move and has been in the leftist-liberal media’s crossfire ever since.

Western Europe owes an apology to the prime minister for how he was treated in 2015, given all he did to protect the EU’s borders during a time of crisis.

Of course, we are aware that this is unlikely — and do not expect gratitude or thanks. What we do expect, however, is equal and fair treatment, which are supposed to be common EU values.

Coronavirus: deaths rise by 760, no of infected up 2,477


Overall number of COVID-19 cases in Italy is 115,242

(ANSA) - Rome, April 2 - The civil protection department said Thursday that 83,049 people are currently infected with the coronavirus in Italy, 2,477 more than Wednesday. The daily rise in the number of people infected was 2,937 on Wednesday.

The department said 13,915 people have now died with the coronavirus in Italy, 760 more than Wednesday.
