Jewish Seattle Woman Becomes First Sephardic American Jew to Gain Spanish Citizenship

A historic milestone was reached on February 15, when Seattle real estate broker Doreen Alhadeff became the first American to reach the end of a process allowing sephardic Jews to become Spanish citizens, according to OU.org.

Last month, Alhadeff, 65, presented a notary in Torremolinos, South Spain, with documentation proving that she met the requirements of a Sephardic citizenship law enacted in October 2015.

Alhadeff’s Sephardic heritage was attested to by a Seattle rabbi. She also passed Spanish language tests, and spent two months living in Spain. Alhadeff’s application was approved, and her Spanish passport is set to arrive in April.
