First fighter from Nordic state killed in Ukraine – media

A Finnish national was reportedly killed over the weekend, according to the head of a volunteer group

A citizen of Finland fighting for Kiev was killed in eastern Ukraine over the weekend, according to the Nordic Combat Medics unit operating in the combat area, the Finnish public broadcaster YLE reported on Monday.

Tina Soini, the head of the unit, claims that the relatives of the man have been informed of his death. He noted, however, that the fighter, whose name has not been disclosed, is still officially considered “missing” because his death cannot be confirmed based on the body.

Jussi Tanner, the head consul of the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, also told YLE that his department is aware of the man’s death.

The outlet noted that the report marks the first time a Finnish citizen has lost his life in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

Shift to the right: Finland's new coalition government is formed and program released

FINLAND 16 JUNE 2023

Finland's political landscape has undergone a notable shift following the National Coalition Party’s (NCP) victory in the parliamentary elections held in April. NCP leader Petteri Orpo announced the formation of a majority government with the eurosceptic, anti-immigration Finns Party, along with two smaller parties - the Swedish People's Party and the Christian Democrats. This coalition signals a significant rightward tilt in Finnish politics, displacing the left-wing Social Democrats, led by outgoing Prime Minister Sanna Marin.

A Complex Negotiation Process

The formation of this new government did not come easily. The coalition parties underwent 11 weeks of intense negotiations to reconcile their differences and agree on a common government program. Over a hundred experts were also heared on various topics. Among the issues that posed significant challenges during the negotiations were immigration, climate policy, and public finances.

The Finns Party, known for its hardline stance against immigration, was especially at odds with the Swedish People’s Party, which considers immigration crucial for tackling Finland's aging population. After almost three months of talks, a compromise was finally reached, clearing the way for the formation of the coalition government.

Finnish economic minister resigns over ‘climate abortions’ speech

Vilhelm Junnila said he was stepping down to spare the country’s reputation after half a dozen scandals surfaced in just one week

Finnish Economic Affairs Minister Vilhelm Junnila resigned on Friday after a speech he had given as a freshman MP resurfaced. In the address, he recommended the country sponsors “climate abortions” for African women in order to save the planet.

“It would be justified for Finland to shoulder its responsibility by promoting climate abortions,” the Finns Party politician declared in 2019, quipping “Climate abortion would be a small step for a person, but a giant leap for humanity.” The party is known for its opposition to the idea that Finns should have to dramatically alter their lifestyles to fight climate change and argues they already pollute markedly less than their European peers.
(...)
No sooner had Junnila been sworn in to his position last Tuesday, than Euronews reported his appearance at a 2019 event organized by far-right groups which one researcher described as a “who’s-who of neo-Nazis in Finland.” The scandals have not stopped piling up since then, culminating in a vote of confidence on Wednesday which he narrowly won, 95-86, even as Prime Minster Petteri Orpo warned him he had to change his behavior to keep serving in the cabinet.

Junnila publicly apologized for attending the event, as well as for a series of “stupid and childish” Hitler and Nazi jokes and other comments his critics had unearthed. Several Facebook messages to his parliamentary assistant also made headlines, including a meme of a snowman dressed in a Ku Klux Klan hood holding a noose.

Now that's a climate change policy I could support.

Top left-wing Finnish politician tries to explain naked Hitler salute picture scandal

Antti Lindtman, a favorite to replace Sanna Marin as his party’s chair, told a Finnish tabloid newspaper the embarrassing photographs were not intended for public viewing

A top Finnish politician in the running to replace former Prime Minister Sanna Marin as leader of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has sought to explain how he came to be photographed stark naked, save a balaclava and Santa hat, with a group of friends giving Hitler salutes.

Antti Lindtman, the current chairman of the Social Democratic Parliamentary Group and a member of parliament for the Finnish district of Uusimaa, has admitted to being one of the individuals in a number of resurfaced photos taken when the 40-year-old politician was 18 years old.

The photographs, which show Lindtman and four other individuals posing in Santa hats and full face masks, equipped with replica firearms, and giving the Sieg Heil salute, have been circulated on social media and among the Finnish media since Tuesday. The SDP politician has now commented on the scandal via the Iltalehti tabloid newspaper.
(...)
The Finn said of those giving Nazi salutes that they had “obviously gone too far with posing,” and insisted the photographs were taken at a Christmas party for his high school film group when he was still a teenager.

“The pictures were taken as a thank you to those who helped us make a short film,” Lindtman told the Finnish tabloid newspaper.

“I wasn’t a Nazi sympathizer then, and I’m not now,” he insisted. “Even then, I could not have been in favor of the neo-Nazis because of my opinions.”
(...)
Lindtman has been particularly outspoken in his criticism of the newly formed coalition government between the center-right National Coalition Party and the right-wing populist Finns Party.

He condemned Vilhelm Junnila, a member of the Finns Party who has already resigned as a minister of the coalition government after it was revealed he made Hitler jokes and spoke at an event attended by neo-Nazis.

Neo-Nazi group armed with 3D-printed guns busted

The gang had allegedly been readying itself for a “race war” and plotting terrorist attacks

Finnish police and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) have concluded a preliminary investigation into a neo-Nazi extremist group, which is suspected of plotting terrorist acts involving the use of 3D-printed firearms. The group was active in the city of Lahti, some 100km northwest of Helsinki.

The group involved at least four suspects, the police said in a statement on Thursday. They were found in possession of four FGC-9s, which are 3D-printable 9mm submachine guns. The weapons are arguably the best-known ‘product’ of the Deterrence Dispensed (DetDisp) group, a decentralized online collective promoting and distributing open-source 3D-printed firearms.
(...)
“The targets of the planned violent attacks were selected based on their skin color, political or other ideological views. In addition to the individual targets, the suspects have planned infrastructure attacks, including the electricity network and rail traffic,” Detective Inspector Tuomas Kuure said.
(...)
The group is believed to have been influenced by the so-called accelerationist ideology, a popular movement among contemporary neo-Nazis. The proponents of such ideology believe that a purportedly inevitable collapse of democratic societies and a looming “racial war” should be ‘accelerated’ through violence, including political assassinations, murders and terrorist attacks.

HS: Assaults and robberies by under 15-year-olds are up in Finland

FINLAND 21 JULY 2023

ASSAULTS and robberies committed by children have increased in recent years in Finland, according to Helsingin Sanomat.

The daily newspaper reported earlier this month that the number of assaults believed to have been committed by under 15-year-olds increased by 58 per cent and robberies by 60 per cent year-on-year between January and June.

“An alarming trend is continuing,” said Markus Kaakinen, a researcher at the University of Helsinki’s Institute of Criminology and Legal Policy.

Police statistics reveal that under 15-year-olds were suspected of more than 1,100 assaults during the first six months of the year, a total that corresponds with a daily average of six. The change from previous years is substantial, with the daily average standing at less than four in 2022 and less than two in 2015.

Assaults and robberies that are believed to have been committed by 15–17-year-olds also increased but not to the extent of those by under 15-year-olds.
