A Merseyside man has been charged over an anti-Semitic tweet to Liverpool MP Luciana Berger.

Garron Helm, 21, of Thomson Road, Litherland was charged with sending an offensive/indecent/obscene message.

It is alleged the tweet was sent to Labour MP Ms Berger, who represents the Wavertree constituency, on Friday, August 8.

A Merseyside police spokeswoman said Helm was bailed to appear before Liverpool Magistrates’ Court next Monday, October 20.

The Jewish News reported that it was the first time charges had been brought in the UK over an anti-Semitic tweet against a high-profile figure and possibly against any individual.

The case relates to an alleged tweet from an account called Aethelwulf.

Quote:
It is claimed the tweet showed a photograph of Berger with a Holocaust-era yellow star superimposed on her forehead and the wording: “You can always count on a Jew to show their true colours eventually.”
A spokeswoman for Ms Berger said she would not be commenting at this time.

The tweet allegedly carried hashtags for Labour, Liverpool and ‘Hitler was right’.
