Default Tens of thousands join electricity protests across Bulgaria

Massive riots in Bulgaria against the government, electricity and bank mafia, and protesters demand for Bulgaria to leave the EU

Massive riots have been going in Bulgaria in the last couple of days. The biggest ones that the country has seen in the last 20 years. More than 300 thousand people went out and protested against the ongoing stealing by the bankers and the electricity companies /CEZ, EON and EVN/, piling pressure on the government after a week of persistent demonstrations.

Unemployment 11.9 percent, and average salaries are stuck at around $550 a month.

David Cameron was on a collision course with Brussels, councils and doctors last night after announcing plans to cut the rights of migrants.

In a major speech, the Prime Minister said he was determined to end Britain’s ‘soft touch’ reputation.

But proposals to limit the access of migrants to the NHS and social housing provoked a backlash from doctors and local authorities. There were also warnings that any plan to cut benefits for migrants from Europe would provoke legal action from Brussels.

Mr Cameron said he was determined to fight those – including in Brussels – who tried to block reforms.

But, as Downing Street struggled to explain the impact of the changes, critics dismissed the package as ‘smoke and mirrors’ – and warned they would do little to curb an expected influx of migrants from Romania and Bulgaria next year.

Professor John Salt, of the Migration Research Unit at University College London, said many of the measures to curb abuse of the system were already in place, but not being used.

On the surface, it contains a string of hugely attractive ideas, which the Prime Minister hopes will convince voters that he is serious about limiting the impact of opening Britain’s borders to millions of Romanians and Bulgarians next year.

Few will argue with the principle that people should not be allowed to travel to Britain solely to live on benefits.

Amid huge concern over health tourism, the proposal to limit access to the NHS is long overdue.

And it is only sensible that, with council houses in desperately short supply, new arrivals should be expected to go to the back of the queue.

Yet, as ever with Mr Cameron, the devil is in the detail.

Yes, EU migrants will have their out-of-work benefits taken away – but only after six months and if they have not tried to find a job (as might a British citizen, in similar circumstances).

Councils will indeed be able to give local people priority for housing – yet they’ll still have a duty of care to look after homeless arrivals from overseas, at huge expense to the taxpayer.

Migrants will be required to have health insurance to access the NHS – but only if they are from outside the EU.

The reason for this timidity, of course, is the need for Mr Cameron to obey the EU’s onerous directives on free movement, along with insidious human rights law.

How courageous it would be if the Prime Minister ignored the squeals from Brussels and took the only course of action guaranteed to protect our national interest: keeping the border controls on Romania and Bulgaria in place.

It's not just Romania and Bulgaria that pose problems, DM, how about the rest of the world? Although I do agree with what they have to say here, it does seem to be turning into a "bash Bulgaria/Romania and ignore the rest of 'em" party for the DM.

I was discussing this matter with someone who also has had daily contact with the invaders and we came to the conclusion we have actually encountered more romaniacs and buggers than actual poles.Further the common denominator for the many of the immigrants are that they are ethnically turks.Whether they are bosnians, serbians, coatians.slovenes, montenegros, albanians, bulgarians, rumanians. The second largest group are "ethnic Russians" with czech, slovak,Ukranian, lithuanian, latvian, estonian nationality. All of the scum that stalin resettled in the conquered east. Then the poles all of them from squatted German lands and presumably rootless degenerate types even for Poland. These are the blighters that the NF are making members of.

Which is exactly what I told you when you claimed it was a Pole washing his feet in the handbasin. Many of them come in an claim to be from a country that is allowed or one that is belching out asylum seekers when they're really from somewhere else. Surely you've seen these immigration programmes where they pull the same trick and they get interpreters to catch them out on what language they really speak.

Stop defending the untermensch invaders I and you have no way of confirming the nationality of the bestial scum carrying out ablution terrorism they do however identify themselves as Poles. The asylum seeker among the slavs has been used for decades as well. The war in yugoslavia, this allowed ethnic albanians to claim they were at risk this example is well known.Less well known is that "ethnic Russians" of Lithuania, estonian, latvian and Ukranian nationality have also claimed that /allowed visas on the grounds that they are a minority at risk.Ethnic turks, mystery meats particularly of bulgarian nationality have claimed the same thing. All qualifying as Asylum seekers, all with UK passports as fast as you like. The only time this has worked in favour of the race is in regard to ethnic Germans from the Ukraine

They are pretty interesting to watch. They raid a sweatshop factory, pull in a dozen immigrants, demand papers and so on then set about proving that the passports are fake and that they're not really speaking Polish but something completely different. Then they detain them at an asylum centre and we hear no more about it, assuming that all is well and they've been sent packing.

I'm not defending them! I'm stating that the foot washer might not have been a Pole, a fact you yourself note. I've had a big issue seller claim to me that she's Polish when she obviously was not; that's what makes me suspicious of anyone claiming to be Polish and doing un-Polish things.

A couple of years ago I had a fantastic idea for a new TV reality show, a cross between Wish You Were Here and Changing Rooms.

The premise was simplicity itself. Judith Chalmers would find the perfect holiday destination for a typical family. They’d spend two idyllic weeks in the sun before returning to discover that their house had been occupied by a gang of Romanian squatters, with hilarious consequences.

While they were away, Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen had helped the immigrants break in, change the locks and trash the place. Surprise!

Maybe if Dave came home to find Number 10 occupied by Romanian squatters, it might concentrate his mind

The cameras would record the reaction of the tearful home-owners as armed police in hi-viz jackets over their body armour turned up to warn them that if they made any attempt to repossess their property, they would be arrested instantly for ‘taking the law into their own hands’.

If they protested too stridently, they could be nicked for ‘hate crime’ against a ‘vulnerable minority’.

The format had BBC Daytime written all over it. Either that, or prime-time Channel 4 in the 8pm freak show/ property porn slot.

Unfortunately, there was one fatal flaw. Real life had already beaten reality television to it.

From across North London came reports of Romanians moving into homes while the owners were away.

In almost all of these cases, the squatters waved a ‘tenancy agreement’ that had allegedly been supplied by a broker.

The Government has now changed the law to make squatting a criminal, rather than a civil, offence. And since the new law came into force last September, guess what?

Nearly half of all the squatters prosecuted or cautioned are, that’s right, Romanian. They heavily outnumber home-grown squatters and those from other nations, including Algeria and Nepal.

And if Romanians make up half of all squatters, they also seem to comprise at least 50 per cent of all the beggars in central London these days. Presumably they return to their suburban squats of an evening.

Scotland Yard says that most of the cashpoint crime in the capital is down to Romanians, too.

So, against this background, it’s worth putting into context Call Me Dave’s ‘tough on immigration’ speech yesterday, written in response to the imminent lifting of restrictions on Romanians and Bulgarians moving to Britain.

Most people will be surprised to discover that there are any controls, given that half the population of Romania appears to be living here already.

Are we supposed to rejoice that arrivals from within the EU will be expected to find a job after six months or lose their right to benefits?

You could just as easily present that the other way round: everyone arriving in Britain will be allowed to live on benefits for six months before they have to look for work.

When you examine the small print, the proposals are far less radical than Cameron would have us believe.

Even if the EU doesn’t decide that the new rules are illegal, you can bet your bottom euro that someone will find a way round them.

The courts have already ruled that foreign nationals selling the Big Issue on Britain’s streets are ‘self-employed’ and therefore entitled to the full panoply of benefits.

Cameron’s speech has ‘stable door’ stamped all over it. The truth is that the political class, Tories and all, sold the pass on immigration donkeys’ years ago.

Those of us who warned of the problems dismantling border controls would bring were howled down as ‘racist’.

Now even the Left is, sort of, admitting it got it wrong, largely because it perceives electoral advantage in pulling on the hair shirt.

Belatedly it’s deemed acceptable to express concerns about mass immigration and the disastrous imposition of ‘multi-culturalism’ because these conclusions have now been drawn by ‘good, liberal people’ rather than harrumphing dinosaurs like me.

In the Daily Mail over the past few days, David Goodhart, director of the Left-wing think-tank Demos, has written an extended mea culpa over the utterly predictable consequences of Labour’s immigration policy.

To which I can only retort: where were you 15 years ago, old son?

Saturday’s paper, which carried Goodhart’s first instalment, also featured a couple of other relevant stories.

The first was a report on the woman from Togo who is going to court in an attempt to force Westminster Council to rescind its decision to make her move out of a £2.5 million mansion in Belgravia. She has been living on benefits, despite the fact her husband is a chartered accountant who runs an online fashion business with a showroom in Togo.

The second was about a convicted African war criminal currently living in a council house in Birmingham. On benefits, naturally. We can’t kick him out because it would infringe his yuman rites.

Both of these stories are pretty much par for the course. Yet still the Government will not grasp the nettle.

If the Prime Minister was serious about addressing the immigration problem, he would refuse to lower the barriers to further immigration from Eastern Europe and pull Britain out of the iniquitous human rights convention.

But he isn’t. And he won’t. Nor will any other political party with a chance of forming a government.

Maybe if Dave came home to find Number 10 occupied by Romanian squatters, it might concentrate his mind.

They targeted Asian and Turkish jewellers in London where there was a large quantity of high-carat gold which could be melted down and sold.

A Romanian gang who carried out a series of raids in six months after coming to the UK specifically to steal gold from jewellery shops have been jailed.

Following his arrest, one of the gang members, 25-year-old Ovidiu Gabor, told police: "I don't care, I go to prison to go on holiday."

A Romanian pickpocket who duped coffee shop customers by using sheets of lined paper as a 'shield' while he stole their phones was behind bars today.

Calin-Lonel Rostas, 27, would trawl cafes and whenever he spotted a mobile phone left on table would put a A4 size piece of paper over it.

He then distracted the owners of the phones by chatting them momentarily about the weather before using his light fingers to sneak the handsets into his pocket as he picked up his piece of paper.

Victims only realised their phones were missing after Rostas left the cafe following his 'gone in five seconds' distraction thefts.

Rostas got away with at least 15 mobile phones worth £6,000, but was caught after police trawled through hours of CCTV footage at coffee shops in Manchester including Starbucks, Costa Coffee, Cafe Nero and two cafes in the city’s university district.

When he was caught it emerged he had just been released from jail for a similar scam.

Today Romanian-born Rostas, now living in Crumpsall, Manchester was jailed for 20 months.

He pleaded guilty to 15 thefts and five attempted thefts, involving four mobile phones and an iPad and was said to have a history of carrying out 13 cons dating back to 2002.

Manchester Crown Court was told Rostas targeted coffee shops and takeaway restaurants in Manchester city centre and south Manchester between December last year and February.

The only official Government report into future Romanian and Bulgarian migration into Britain has been branded a ‘whitewash’ – after it failed to answer the key question of how many would arrive next year.

From January 1, EU controls on workers from the two countries will expire, allowing almost 29million people free access to work here.

Following repeated refusals by ministers to estimate how many will come, the £30,000 Foreign Office-commissioned study said it was ‘not possible to predict the scale of future migration’ from the two EU countries.
The MigrationWatch think-tank has predicted about 50,000 Romanian and Bulgarian migrants could come here every year from next year

The MigrationWatch think-tank has predicted about 50,000 Romanian and Bulgarian migrants could come here every year from next year

However, the report did warn an influx could lead to pressure on already scarce primary school places, and of high levels of diseases such as measles among Romanian nationals.

The lack of estimate provoked ridicule from commentators and backbench Tory MPs.

The MigrationWatch think-tank has predicted about 50,000 Romanian and Bulgarian migrants could come here every year from next year.

Chairman Sir Andrew Green said: ‘This report is a bucket of whitewash. In 60 pages it provides no estimate whatever. It doesn’t even address the only estimate published so far, by MigrationWatch.’

‘It brushes aside any indication of an increase in migration from these countries

The iconic Louvre in Paris was forced to close its doors to the public today after staff staged a walk out in protest at the increasing number of pickpocket thefts by Romanian immigrant children at the museum.

Hundreds of staff refused to work because of the increasing number of thieves targeting tourists at the city's famous landmark, which normally attracts up to 30,000 visitors a day.

Many of the thieves are said to be the children of Romanian immigrants who get into the museum for free and then start asking tourists for money.

A shortage of workers will mean people will have to stay in jobs until they are at least 70, ministers claim.

Employers are warned they must change their attitudes towards older workers, who ‘already live here and their numbers are growing’.

The government says Britain is ‘running out of workers, with 13.5million vacancies predicted in the next decade but only 7million young people due to leave school and college.

Ministers believe the gap can be filled by older people staying in the workplace for longer.

The BBC was tonight accused of playing down the results of its own immigration survey and concocting ‘nothing-to-see-here headlines’.

Its poll, carried out for Newsnight, found seven in ten of the Romanians who are thinking about moving to live in Britain would reconsider in the light of the new benefits restriction system.

But Ukip leader Nigel Farage said the story is ‘a good deal more shocking than the BBC's headlines suggest’.

The poll found that one in every 12 Romanians (8.2 per cent) and 13.6 per cent of Bulgarians would consider the UK as a migration destination this year or next.

Furthermore, 4.6 per cent of Romanians and 9.3 per cent of Bulgarians said it would be their first choice of country to move to.

A number have already started looking for work and a place to live, according to the survey.

But Ukip leader Nigel Farage said: ‘Looking at the figures which the BBC have quoted in their report, their survey of 1,014 Bulgarian adults showed that 37 per cent had considered moving to another EU state in the past five years (2.7 million people); and that 36 per cent intend to work elsewhere in the EU in 2013/14 (2.65 million), of which 9.3 per cent (689,000) stated the UK was their destination.

‘In the survey of Romanian adults, 33 per cent had considered moving to another EU state in the past five years (6.3million people); and 36 per cent intend to work elsewhere in the EU in 2013/14 (1.8 million), of which 4.6 per cent (338,000) stated the UK was their destination.

‘Together, the total considering moving to the UK in 2013 and 2014 was therefore over a million’.

‘More startlingly, though, the BBC has then concocted their astonishing “nothing to see here” headlines out of a series of follow up questions. If you convert their stated percentages into real figures, the story is a good deal more shocking than the BBC's headlines suggest.

‘It is surely perverse to suggest that there is nothing to worry about, when their own survey shows that 83,537 people (76,172 Romanians and 7,365 Bulgarians) are already attending job interviews in the UK; 263,337 people (57,129 Romanians and 206,208 Bulgarians) are currently looking for a job in the UK with the help of a recruitment company; 236,405 people (133,301 Romanians and 103,104 Bulgarians) are currently looking for a job in the UK without the help of a recruitment company; and 164,547 (76,172 Romanians and 88,375 Bulgarians) are already in the process of finding a place to live in the UK.’

He added: ‘It looks to me that the BBC is engaging, with its headlining of this story, not in reporting the facts, but in influencing the debate.’

The findings of the poll, conducted by Gallop Romania and the Bulgarian Vitosha Research, suggest David Cameron may succeed in reducing numbers of immigrants from the two countries with a series of curbs on the benefit rights of EU migrants announced last month.

Among Bulgarians, however, there was little evidence they would change the minds of those planning to move to Britain.

Romanian and Bulgarian citizens, whose countries joined the EU in 2007, will have the right to work freely in Britain from the end of the year.

The potential impact of a new wave of Eastern European migration has been a growing public concern and an increasing worry to politicians.

'It looks to me that the BBC is engaging, with its headlining of this story, not in reporting the facts, but in influencing the debate'

Ukip leader Nigel Farage

The MigrationWatch think-tank, which has a record of accuracy, has projected around 50,000 Bulgarian and Romanians will come each year.

Mr Cameron has been paying increased attention to immigration since the Tories lost the Eastleigh by-election in February thanks to the desertion of voters to UKIP.

His restrictions include: a six-month limit on the right of EU migrants to claim out-of-work benefits; stopping benefit payments to those who cannot show they are close to finding a job; changing rules so EU migrants are not eligible for council or housing association homes for at least two years; and making hospitals charge those not entitled to NHS care.

The poll found that 1.2 per cent of Bulgarians and 0.4 per cent of Romanians have begun to look for accommodation in Britain.

Meanwhile, 2.8 per cent of Bulgarians and 0.3 per cent of Romanians had begun to look for a job in Britain through recruitment agencies.

The findings come after the Mail revealed on Friday how Romanian migrants have returned to a patch of grass on Park Lane in Central London, with fears they may set up camp.

Last year a 40-strong group turned the site into a rubbish dump, while there were reports of knife-point robberies and other crimes.

A BBC spokesman denied tonight that the Corporation had spun the figures.

Up to 35,000 Romanian and Bulgarian nationals could come to Britain next year, according to their ambassadors to the UK.

The British Government has repeatedly refused to put a figure on the likely influx from January 1 2014 when border controls must be abandoned.

Ministers say it is impossible to predict numbers and fear a repeat of the 2004 debacle when the influx from eight other Eastern European countries was grossly underestimated.

Romanian vagrants have set up home in the private gardens of one of London's most exclusive squares, it has been claimed.

Residents of Bryanston Square in Marylebone, say half a dozen of the migrants sneak into the picturesque gardens at night, leaving rubbish and human waste behind.

A gardener has said they have even left bottles of urine in a children's playground.

It comes just days after Romanian beggars returned to Park Lane, near Marble Arch, where they are now sleeping rough - fuelling concern of a repeat of last year's long running saga.

Bryanston Square is one of London's most exclusive areas

A 40-strong group moved into the area ahead of last year's Olympics, turning the site into a rubbish dump. They were also accused of knife-point robberies and other crimes.

Now locals say a group of about five or six Romanians have been sleeping rough in Bryanston Square gardens for over a year, despite efforts by police to move them on.

A two bedroom flat in the area is currently on the market for £2million.

The picturesque garden is reserved for the affluent residents, yet late at night the gang scale the spiked fences to sleep.

A worker in the gardens, who did not want to give his name, said the group have made their home in there, bringing blankets and duvets to keep warm.

They then leave early in the morning or when police kick them out, often leaving behind two litre bottles filled with urine, he said.

He said: 'I have seen them here many times in the morning. They sleep at the end in the playground. It is usually the women here but sometimes they are with men.

'They sometimes leave behind their electric blankets and duvets.

'We throw them in the bin but they come and get them again.

'We have to pick up after them. It is mostly chocolate bar wrappers and cans of drink.'

'We must clean up because there are young children coming to play there.'

A gardener, who also did not want to be named, said: 'We clean up the urine so they do not know they leave it here.

'Most people who live round here feel sorry for them because they are homeless.

'But this England we have the welfare system and salvation army. You cant just come to one of the richest parts of London and just set up camp.'

He said police regularly patrol the area, moving the gang on.

He said: 'They are around here a lot. One policemen said to me 'don't feel sorry for them, they are scum'.

'I do resent them. Firstly for what they leave behind for us to pick up but also because they don't work. I work hard for not much money, yet all they do is spend their time begging.'

One resident, living on Byranston Square, added: 'Yes it is a worry because who would want to move in around here with neighbours like that.

'Houses around here are extremely expensive so obviously if you have this sort of problem then it would put you off. I would not move here now.

'Will house prices go down? It is possible.'

The group store their equipment in doorways and in front of shops during the day

Another, who was playing with her daughter in the playground but didn't want to give her name, said: 'We do have a problem. The residents' association have had meetings about it and we are working with the police.

Jon Tann, who works as a security guard at a private residence on Byranston Square, said: 'They have been here for over a year. Police move them on but they just come back.

'They started off sleeping in doorways up in roads nearby but recently they have been moving into the Gardens more often.'
