Post Sweden home to 2,000 Islamist extremists

According to Sweden's intelligence and security service, Säpo, there has been a nearly ten-fold increase in the number of Islamist extremists in the country since it last published figures in 2010.

Anders Thornberg, the head of Säpo, linked the rise to the sophisticated propaganda machine of the so-called Islamic State.

Speaking at Almedalen Week on the Baltic island of Gotland, he said: "It does not mean that there are 3,000 people who are going to commit terrorist attacks, it means that individuals can support, raise money, recruit and, in various ways, assist with logistics."

Some are more of a threat than others, and we must constantly look at this environment to find those who are most interesting and prioritize the right people who may have a bad intention," he told the audience.

Sweden experienced a terrorist attack in April when an Uzbek national, who had shown sympathies for groups such as IS, used a truck to run over people on a busy street in central Stockholm, killing five and injuring many more.

Thornberg said that the other one thousand violent extremists came from the far-right and extreme-left.

Säpo estimates that 300 people from Sweden are known to have travelled to Iraq and Syria to join IS since 2012.
