Happy Birthday Joseph E. Johnston
Joseph Eggleston Johnston
Born February 3, 1807 in Farmville, Virginia on Cherry Grove Plantation Died March 21, 1891 in Washington, DC Buried in Green Mount Cemetery Baltimore, Maryland Joe Johnston is not rated highly among Confederate generals by historians, but his defensive style of fighting kept his armies intact. He was popular with his soldiers. I believe there was something to be said about his fighting style. The Confederacy was outnumbered 4-1 in White men of fighting age. His style was to retreat and wait for the enemy to make a mistake. When they did, he struck furiously, making them pay. Perhaps this style of giving up land to save armies, attacking when the Yankees were caught off-guard, could have won the war for the South. Perhaps. This style was a combination of standard operations spiced with a guerrilla flair. BTW, Baltimore does not deserve such an honorable man. I would love to see his remains moved to a more fitting cemetery, such as Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, VA. |

Had Johnston not been replaced by Hood for the final defense of Atlanta, there's a very good likelihood that Sherman may not have been able to take Atlanta nearly as early as he did. I think removing Johnston for Hood was one of the greatest errors Jeff Davis ever made.
He (Davis) wanted a general who would engage and attack Sherman. Hood was his man; did so, and promptly got his ass kicked royally. Johnston's defensive fighting strategy was immensely frustrating to Sherman, who really didn't know how to deal with it. Sherman held Johnston in highest respect, having had his army's clock cleaned by Johnston on several occasions. We should also remember that it was Johnston's army which was the last of the large southern armies to surrender (at Goldsboro, NC), about ten days after Lee surrendered at Appomattox. He received (from Sherman) the same generous terms of surrender for his soldiers that Lee did.

Yeah but at that point they needed offensive operations, Retreating like Johnston did all the time was just gobbling up the resources, maneuverability and recruiting pools available to them don't you think?

Mencken wrote about this; the reluctance of the American soldier to fight during the Civil War, be they Northern or Southern. He essentially blamed it on Celtic admixture, among other things, and prophesied that the American "race" was to fall behind on the world stage unless an influx of more capable blood was to infuse the Americans of that period. This can all be read in his publication, "The Anglo-Saxon". He also went on to speak of how the other European groups such as the French and Spaniards faced enemies of equal arms with valor and bravery on numerous occasions, yet the Anglo-Saxons would, if possible, always refrain from conflict and instead use cunning or deception to accomplish their goals.

Hmmm well America cannot always be defined by a euro outlook. For example during that time and even before the germans were known to be "flying Dutchmen" meaning they would run away during most battles. So much so that most troops grew a disdain being quartered with germans. But that's just American anecdotes.
