Attack on Quebec: the 29th of January will not be a day against islamophobia

OTTAWA – The date of the bombing of the mosque of Quebec will not become a national day against islamophobia.

The minister for Heritage, Mélanie Joly, published on Friday its response to the report of the parliamentary committee which recommended, in February last, “that the 29th of January is declared a national Day of remembrance and activities relating to islamophobia and any other form of religious discrimination”.

In its response of 24 pages, instead of deciding the issue, the minister will ignore the recommendation. The document consists of a single mention of the attack that six dead at the islamic cultural Centre of Quebec last year.

“The terrorist attack perpetrated on 29 January 2017, against the faithful at the islamic cultural Centre of Québec, we are reminded, tragically, up to the point where racism and religious discrimination, including islamophobia, can lead,” writes the minister.

She then calls on Canadians to “remember this tragedy,” and ensures that the federal government “will continue to increase the awareness of our efforts to combat all forms of racism and religious discrimination, including islamophobia, in Canada”.

The report of the committee had brought water to the mill of many muslim organizations in the country. The national Council of canadian muslims (CNMC) had arrested the prime minister, Justin Trudeau in January so that the date of the attack became the national Day of remembrance and action against islamophobia.

In Quebec, the issue of islamophobia, however, has proved to be particularly delicate, as all provincial parties have rejected the idea of such a day.
