Jewish umbrella body calls on European leaders to react to ‘human rights violations in Iran’

PARIS (EJP)---The European Jewish Congress (EJC) on Wednesday callED upon European government leaders who meet this week in Brussels "to react to the human rights violations that have been taking place in Iran."

“At this moment in time, European leaders have a unique opportunity and responsibility to demonstrate international leadership on human rights and tolerance by curtailing business dealings with Iran and increasing sanctions on those who do. Time is of the essence,” said Wednesday a statement from the umbrella organization for the Jewish communities in Europe.

“It is not enough for European leaders to merely note possible irregularities in the elections and the human rights violations against Iranian citizens protesting the results. European trade and business ties with Iran supports the very regime that is cracking down on the Iranian citizenry,” EJC President Moshe Kantor said.

It added: “European companies that continue to do business with Iran provide the engine that fuels the Iranian economy, including its violations of human rights, support of terror organizations, and pursuit of nuclear weapons.”

The EJC noted that while the leaders of Iraq, Hamas, and Afghanistan have congratulated Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on his re-election, “the rest of the world is watching the ongoing developments and civil unrest in Iran with alarm.”

“The violent response by the Iranian regime to the mostly peaceful protests risks further diplomatic efforts to bring Iran back into the fold of the international community, including and most importantly, talks on its nuclear status.”
