US general disputes Trump's claim about military threat on southern border

The top US general for homeland security says the influx of illegal immigrants and drugs across the US-Mexico border does not constitute a national emergency, despite claims by President Donald Trump.

"It is not a military threat," US Air Force General Terence O'Shaughnessy, the commander of US Northern Command and North American Aerospace Defense Command, told a Senate committee on Tuesday.

O'Shaughnessy, however, added that does not necessarily mean the military should not be involved in the border mission.

The general's remarks come as the US Defense Department plans to send hundreds more American troops to the southern border. The current 5,000 troops will expand to roughly 6,000 by March, the Pentagon confirmed last week.

After Congress rejected Trump's request for $5.7 billion to build a wall on the southern border, the Republican president declared a national emergency to fund the barrier using Pentagon funds.

Under the emergency, Trump would appropriate a total of $8 billion previously approved by Congress for other purposes, notably the Pentagon budget for military construction projects.

Members of Congress are challenging that.

CENTCOM Chief: Conditions Not Right to Pull Out of Afghanistan

The top U.S. general in the Middle East is warning against removing troops from Afghanistan too soon or considering the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria defeated after the president called for an end to the wars in the region.

Army Gen. Joseph Votel, head of U.S. Central Command, reiterated that any decision to leave Afghanistan must be based on the conditions on the ground rather than set timelines. While he's been given no direct order to remove troops from Afghanistan, he said, the time is not right for a full withdrawal.

"The political conditions where we are in the reconciliation right now don't merit that," Votel said during a Thursday House Armed Services Committee.

Votel also said the fight against the Islamic State group, which troops have been battling across Iraq and Syria, is "far from over." While the destruction of the ISIS caliphate in Syria was a "monumental military accomplishment," he said the terror group is likely to make a resurgence.

More often than not, reports of intercepts are made to sound aggressive and rare, when in reality, this a very routine occurrence. And who is doing what to who? The Russian Defense Ministry (MoD) has released stunning footage of yet another intercept of a US spy plane over the waters of the Baltic Sea near the Russian border.

The short video of the engagement involves a Russian Su-27 fighter jet closely shadowing a large US Air Force aircraft, identified as an RC-135 reconnaissance plane. The fast and highly maneuverable Russian fighter aircraft pulls up behind the huge spy plane before advancing forward on the port side below the wing to align with the RC-135.

The Russian MoD released the video on Thursday, however, no precise time details regarding when the intercept took place were given.

The video was described by the MoD when uploaded to its official YouTube channel merely as, “Interception of targets by the Su-27 fighter over the neutral waters of the Baltic Sea."

I've had to suffer through numerous "laser scares" at various locations - all of them beyond retarded. Almost always turned out to be some dumb ass brats playing around with a toy of some kind and not really capable of dazzling jack shit. But the aircrews always end up receiving special briefings chocked full of good advice like "close an eye" or "don't look at the laser". Guess we were not supposed to be looking out the window on approach and landing. And then there were the laser resistant sunglasses which really didn't work and if you wore glasses were unusable.

Yep, I know. One of my favorite threads. Other flying shitboxes: F-22, B-1, B-2, and coming soon, re-engined B-52 (maybe the B-52-MAX)!

B-2 - too expensive and fragile to use for more than a few token training missions and show the flag sorties. Pilots mostly train and maintain currency in a simulator. Most of their actual time in the sky is in T-38's, otherwise they would never have any real stick time. Pilots all have holier than thou attitudes, without the actual skill to back up their narcissism.

F-22 - another way over priced fiasco. Makes a fine static display. Okay, if you like to sit in a briefing room and fly your watch to show your air-to-air prowess. See previous remarks about B-2 pilots, but only worse - far worse.

B-1 - Probably too dangerous to even use as a static display. Grotesquely underpowered, fuel hog extraordinaire. Plus, it's slower than snot and really can't be flown at altitudes higher than mid FL20's. Original defensive countermeasures were non-existent sci-fi fantasies and the navigation/bombing system was initially just a poor man's copy of the then B-52's system except with phase arrayed radar. Could go on and on, but in short a POS. Many bone yarded. Pilot's visibilty out of the cockpit is horrible. Greatly distorted by extra thick, sun crazed plexiglass. Useful for bombing defenceless, dark skinned races.

B-52 - Older than dirt. Can't wait to see how f'd up it will be with new engines. Requires ridiculously wide taxi ways/runways for operations, thanks to the tip gear near the external tanks way out on the wings. Not acrobatic - refer to Fairchild AFB crash many years ago. In its heyday was okay for toe-to-toe nuclear warfare with the rooskies.
