Iceman May Have Been Buried in a Ceremony
Iceman May Have Been Buried in a Ceremony
August 26, 2010 12:00 AM http://news.sciencemag.org/scienceno...-ceremony.html Alpine mystery. A map of the objects surroundings Ötzi’s final resting place reveals that he may have been ceremoniously buried. Researchers have long thought that Ötzi, the 5000-year-old Iceman found in the Alps in 1991, died wounded and alone, perhaps the victim of a raging blizzard. But a provocative new paper tells a radically different story. |

Ötzi the Iceman Needed a Dentist Ötzi the Iceman could have used a dentist. The amazingly preserved Neolithic mummy found in the Italian Alps had tooth decay, gum disease and dental trauma, new research suggests. The new findings, published Tuesday (April 9) in the European Journal of Oral Sciences, suggest that the Iceman mummy’s grain-heavy diet took a toll on his dental health. “It’s surprising how bad condition he is in,” said study co-author Frank Ruhli, a paleopathologist at the University of Zurich in Switzerland. “We have the whole range of disease pathologies you can imagine.” Ötzi is probably the most-studied Neolithic man in history. More than 5,000 years ago, the ancient iceman was hit by an arrow and bled to death on a glacier in the Alps between modern-day Austria and Italy. The glacier preserved his body until it was discovered by hikers in 1991. Iceman Mummy Had Bad Teeth | Otzi | LiveScience |

Was his heart, liver or other organs missing? Oh wait, he was a White guy who died in Europe thousands of years ago, so no, they were not.
In order for him to have been cannibalized by his own people, he would have to have been an injun living in north, central or south america a mere few hundred years ago. Or maybe in africa or new guinea today. But this guy Otzi fascinates me, I'm sure he still has many stories to tell. And his dental X-rays look better than mine did about six years and $32,000 ago. |

Scan finds new tattoos on 5300-year-old Iceman A new study has used advanced imaging techniques to identify previously unknown tattoos on the ribcage of the 5300-year old man known as Ötzi, bringing his total number of tattoos to 61. Thanks to more than two decades of analysis, scientists arguably know more about Ötzi’s health and final days than those of any other ancient human. He died at around 45 years of age after being shot in the back with a stone-tipped arrow and bludgeoned. Ötzi was tattooed, and offers the earliest direct evidence that tattooing was practiced in Europe by at least the Chalcolithic period. However, until now it has been difficult to conclusively catalog all of his marks. Ötzi’s epidermis naturally darkened from prolonged exposure to sub-zero temperatures as he lay beneath the glacier, and as a result some of his tattoos became faint or invisible to the naked eye. Consequently previous studies have identified between 47 and 60 tattoos on the Iceman’s body. http://www.redorbit.com/news/science...ceman-012215/? |

Ötzi the Iceman's Wild Wardrobe Revealed Ötzi the Iceman's hard-core leather outfit would have made animal rights activists shudder. The 5,300-year-old iceman mummy, whose remarkably preserved body was found frozen in the Tyrolean Alps in Austria, once sported an outfit made almost completely of animal skin, new genetic evidence suggests. And scientists even know which animals were used to make this Stone Age getup. http://www.livescience.com/55804-otz...dentified.html |

New findings give insight into life and death of 5000-year-old ice mummy
The copper used to make the axe blade of 5,000-year-old mummy Ötzi did not come from the Alpine region as had previously been supposed, but from ore mined in southern Tuscany. Ötzi was probably not involved in working the metal himself, as the high levels of arsenic and copper found in his hair had, until now, led us to assume. His murder over 5,000 years ago seems to have been brought about due to a personal conflict a few days before his demise, and the man from the ice, despite his normal weight and active life-style, suffered from extensive vascular calcification. http://phys.org/news/2016-09-insight...d-ice.html#jCp |

Crossing the Alps in the Neolithic age
Did Ötzi have Swiss relatives? New information has emerged this week about an archaeological discovery in Switzerland that points to significant links between areas north and south of the Alps 5,000 years ago. For years, archaeologists have been studying a copper axe blade found at the pile dwelling site of Riedmatt, in canton Zug in 2008. It was probably placed in the water as a sacrificial offering about 5,000 years ago. This week, following research at the University of Bern, surprising results were announced: the shape and material of the blade (see photo) are practically identical to those that were used by Neolithic peoples further south – including Ötzi, the 5,000-year-old “iceman” pulled out of the Italian alps in 1991. http://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/snow-and...g_evsource=rss |

Ötzi the Iceman Had Just Sharpened His Tools Days Before His Murder Days before his violent murder in the Italian Alps about 5,300 years ago, Ötzi the iceman re-sharpened his tools, likely with his right hand, according to a new analysis of the cut marks on his belongings. However, that may not mean the iceman was sharpening his tools because he was anticipating a fight — especially because he hadn't recently re-sharpened his dagger or other weapons, the researchers in the new analysis said. https://www.livescience.com/62872-ot...mmy-tools.html |

5,300-year-old Iceman's last meal reveals remarkably high-fat diet In 1991, German tourists discovered, in the Eastern Italian Alps, a human body that was later determined to be the oldest naturally preserved ice mummy, known as Otzi or the Iceman. Now, researchers reporting in the journal Current Biology on July 12 who have conducted the first in-depth analysis of the Iceman’s stomach contents offer a rare glimpse of our ancestor’s ancient dietary habits. Among other things, their findings show that the Iceman’s last meal was heavy on the fat. The findings offer important insights into the nutritional habits of European individuals, going back more than 5,000 years to the Copper Age. They also offer clues as to how our ancient ancestors handled food preparation. https://phys.org/news/2018-07-year-o...emarkably.html |

Rewriting the Story of Ötzi, the Murdered Iceman
A new study suggests that nearly everything archaeologists thought they knew about the 5,300-year-old corpse’s preservation was wrong November 10, 2022 In September 1991, German hikers exploring the Tyrolean Alps between Italy and Austria made a shocking discovery: a human corpse. Though officials initially assumed that the man had died recently, archaeologists later revealed that the body—which had been shot in the back with an arrow—was roughly 5,300 years old. Somehow, the ice, snow, sun, wind and other conditions of the high-alpine environment had preserved the body for the ages. The ice mummy later earned the nickname “Ötzi,” a reference to the nearby Ötztal Valley. Since 1998, the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology in Bolzano, Italy, has housed his body in a special cold cell unit. Visitors can look at Ötzi through a small window, as well as view restored pieces of his clothing and equipment. https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart...man-180981103/ |
