Unhappy Three Norwegian men accused of terrorism

Three Norwegian males have been charged with creating, participating in, recruiting members or providing financial or other material support to a terrorist organization. Tuesday was the first day of the trial. The District Attorney has charged two Norwegian males, aged 25 and 28 with an Albanian background, and a 30-year-old male with a Somali background with participating in terrorism.

Two of them have been accused of fighting with weapons for the Islamic State (IS), and one of them has been accused of contributing material support to the IS. This is the first time the paragraph under which the three Norwegians have been charged has been tried in court. All three have pleaded not guilty. Svein Holden, the 28-year-old's defense attorney, finds the new paragraph challenging.

"It is always challenging when a new penal provision is tried in court. What significance it will have that the accused was in Syria at a time when this provision had not yet been confirmed is a central question," Holden says. "The situation today is in many ways different from the time when my client was there."

The prosecution thinks that the accused went to Syria to fight for the IS. However, two of the accused claim that they traveled to Syria to help the Syrian population free itself from Assad's regime. The 30-year-old admits to having become a member of the IS on May 1, 2013, an organization that was made illegal to join in 2013.

The accused could be sentenced to up to six years in prison. The trial is scheduled to go on until March 27.
