Russia warns it may ‘reassess’ ties with UN body

Moscow has cautioned UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres against any “illegal investigation” into an alleged transfer of Iranian drones to Russia

Russia has accused the West of trying to draw attention away from its involvement in the military conflict in Ukraine by attempting to launch a probe into alleged drone transfers from Iran.

Moscow’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Dmitry Polyansky, said on Wednesday that Russia may have to “reassess [its] cooperation” with the United Nations Secretariat if it decides to take part in such investigations.

His warning came in response to accusations that Iran has been supplying Moscow with UAVs in violation of UN Security Council Resolution 2231, which implements the 2015 nuclear deal known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Russian official apologizes for op-ed that country’s Jewish leaders called ‘vulgar antisemitism’

October 30, 2022

A Russian official has apologized after his deputy published an op-ed that referred to the Chabad-Lubavitch movement of Orthodox Judaism as a “neo-pagan cult” striving for “global domination.”

Top leaders of Chabad in Russia, who have been navigating a fine line in their relationship with the government during the country’s war on Ukraine, criticized the column published last week in a state magazine as antisemitic.

Russian chief rabbi, Berel Lazar, who is part of Chabad, called the column “a piece of vulgar antisemitism.” His top deputy warned that the column heralded “a new era in Russia’s relations with Jews.”

In the column, published in the Argumenty i Fakty weekly newspaper, Aleksey Pavlov, secretary of the Security Council of Russia, a government committee of experts, spoke of the need to perform “desatanization” in Ukraine, which Pavlov claimed had hundreds of neo-pagan cults. He included “the Chabad-Lubavitch sect,” as he called it, on a list of various religious groups that he said proved his point.

Star rising in Kremlin, Russia's Medvedev predicts war in West

By Reuters Staff

(Reuters) - Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, an arch loyalist of Vladimir Putin given a new job this week, predicted war between Germany and France next year and a civil war in the United States that would lead to Elon Musk becoming president.

Medvedev, deputy head of Putin’s advisory security council, served as president during a four-year spell when Putin held the office of prime minister. He appears to have seen his fortune rise in the Kremlin, which said on Monday he would now serve as Putin’s deputy on a body overseeing the military industry.

In his list of predictions for 2023, published on his personal Telegram and Twitter accounts, he also foresaw Britain rejoining the EU, which would in turn collapse.

Musk, the Tesla boss who now owns Twitter, responded to the suggestion he would emerge as U.S. president by tweeting back “Epic thread!!”, although he also criticised some of Medvedev’s predictions.

Russia's latest warship to hold joint drills with Chinese, South African navies - source

Quote:
MOSCOW, January 23. /TASS/. The Russian Navy's cutting-edge frigate Admiral Gorshkov carrying Tsirkon hypersonic missiles will replenish supplies at the Syrian port of Tartus and participate in the joint drills with the Chinese and South African navies in its long-distance deployment, a military diplomatic source told TASS on Monday.

"In its long-distance deployment, the Admiral Gorshkov will call at the logistics base in the Syrian port of Tartus, following which it will participate in the joint drills with the Chinese and South African navies," the source said.

TASS has no official confirmation of this information yet.

The naval drills involving naval ships from South Africa, Russia and China will run February 17-27. As the South African Defense Ministry said in a statement posted on its website, the upcoming 10-day drills will take place near the coastal town of Durban and Richards Bay in the Indian Ocean with the aim of "sharing operational skills and knowledge." The exercise aims "to strengthen the already flourishing relations between South Africa, Russia and China," the statement reads.

Russian citizen who posted picture of Hitler online eight years ago fined €21,600 over ‘rehabilitating Nazism’

20/03/2023

Chukotka’s court has fined a 41-year-old resident of the Anadyr town 1.8 million rubles (€21,600) over charges of rehabilitating Nazism online, local news agency Chukotka reports, citing the regional department of Russia’s Investigative Committee.

Mediazona notes that according to the court database the man in question is Roman Novikov. His sentencing took place on 6 March. The reason for initiation of the criminal case was a social media post dated 5 January 2015 — the post featured a photo of Adolf Hitler. The post was discovered by law enforcement officers.

“The image was accompanied by a message containing public justification of the Nazi ideology,” the Chukotka news agency quotes the investigators.

The criminal case against the man was initiated in November 2022. According to the investigation, he pleaded guilty; his case was considered in a special manner, without examining the evidence.

Black Sea grain deal hits obstacle – UN

Russia has reportedly restricted access to one Ukrainian port until Kiev reactivates a fertilizer pipeline

Russia has notified the Joint Coordination Center in Istanbul it will restrict the passage of grain ships to the port of Yuzhny until Ukraine reopens the Togliatti-Odessa ammonia pipeline, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters on Thursday.

Dujarric said that Director General Rebecca Greenspan of the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) is working to resolve the pipeline issue, but there was no progress to report yet, according to the TASS news agency.

The UN also expressed concern that the implementation of the deal has slowed down, with only 33 ships leaving Ukrainian ports in May, “two times less than in April.” Meanwhile, the number of inspection teams has been reduced from three to two.

Ex-US paratrooper arrested in Russia

Travis Leake, who has resided in Moscow for several years, faces drug-dealing charges

A Moscow court has placed a US army veteran in custody on suspicion of drug dealing. Travis Leake has been living in Russia for several years, working as a musician, local media has reported.

On Saturday, TASS news agency quoted the press office of Moscow’s Khamovniki Court, confirming that the American would be kept in pre-trial detention until August 6.

Officials also revealed that Leake’s acquaintance, Valeria Grobanyuk, was arrested earlier in connection with the case.

According to Russia’s REN TV channel, police searched Leake’s apartment earlier this week, and recovered a suspicious-looking substance, scales, as well as ziploc bags.

If found guilty, the US veteran could face up to 12 years in jail.

Bird strike, drone strike, sabotage or just an engine fire? Footage shows the Il-76's number 4 engine on fire, then falling off before the plane crashes. This is the same type of aircraft carrying Ukrainian POWs for a prisoner swap that was shot down by a Kiev regime missile back in January, killing everyone aboard. I wonder who was aboard this one.
