French police 'detain 80 men' in 'unprecedented' one-week crackdown on suspected child sex abusers, with a local councilor and two school teachers among those arrested

The swoop focused on professions where adults were in regular contact with children and was the country's most far-reaching swoop on suspected child sex abusers, police sources said. Arrests were made in 53 of France's 101 departments, according to Commissioner Quentin Bevan, who heads the operational unit of the Office for Minors within the judicial police, which coordinated the operation. The suspects were detained for a range of crimes, with around a dozen others suspected of raping or sexually abusing minors. Two members of the Rochdale grooming gang convicted of paedophilia offences are still waiting to be deported back to Pakistan – because their home country is refusing to take them back. Qari Abdul Rauf, 54 and Adil Khan, 53, were part of a group of Asian men who plied girls as young as 12 with alcohol and drugs before ferrying them around the north of England in taxis to be raped by other predators. Both have since been released, as have at least five others, one of whom was set to be returned to his home country upon release. The ringleader is still believed to be behind bars while another was due to conclude his sentence later this year. A new hard-hitting report released yesterday concluded that at least 96 men who pose a potential risk to children continue to roam the Greater Manchester area, but admits they are likely 'only a proportion of the individuals' committing sex abuse. A MailOnline investigation has revealed that 11 out of 22 core members of linked Rotherham sex gangs are back on the streets despite being involved in the abuse and trafficking of up to 1,400 girls. A twelfth member, Zalgai Ahmadi, now 51, was told on Friday 26th January, 2024, that the Parole Board had recommended his release. He was serving a nine-and-a-half year sentence for being part of a gang that held a 14-year-old girl in his flat against her will. The panel ruled that the abuser, convicted of conspiracy to commit sexual assault and false imprisonment and jailed at Sheffield Crown Court in May 2017, was no longer a threat to the public. The Secretary of State for Justice has 28 days to ask the Parole Board to reconsider its judgement. It does not have the power to overturn the decision. Newcastle grooming gang jailed for raping 13-year-old girl

The four attackers were aged between 15 and 21 when they abused the victim between August 2018 and April 2019, Newcastle Crown Court heard. The girl said they "tortured" her, making childhood a "living nightmare". Brothers Omar and Mohamed Badreddin and Huzaefa Aleboud were found guilty of multiple rapes. Hamoud Al Soaimi was found guilty of sexual assault. 'Aggressive and rough' Judge Amanda Rippon said the girl was already "extremely vulnerable" when she met the "far more sophisticated" males in Newcastle. She was repeatedly abused near the castle in Newcastle city centre and behind a burger restaurant after being "groomed" with alcohol and cigarettes, the court heard. Mohamed Badreddin, then aged 17, was "aggressive and rough" with her and threatened that his brother Omar, then aged 20, would "hurt her if she didn't do stuff with him", prosecutor Anne Richardson said. The girl was also raped at her own home with the brothers, who moved to the UK as refugees from the war in Syria, telling her she would be killed or taken to another country, Ms Richardson said. The court heard she was raped by Omar Badreddin on at least seven occasions, the first time immediately after his brother had raped her. Al Soaimi, who was 15 at the time and from Kuwait, was heard by a passing witness saying it was his "turn" with the girl after she had been raped. He also sexually assaulted a 12-year-old girl, the court heard, with Judge Rippon saying he was copying the behaviour of Badreddin brothers whose "swagger" he "foolishly held in high regard". 'Petrified' In a statement read to the court, the 13-year-old victim, now aged 19, said: "My childhood turned into what I can only describe as a living nightmare." She said she dropped out of school and turned to drugs and self-harming to "cope" with the trauma, adding her family had also been devastated by what happened. The girl said she was "petrified" of the men who had "tortured" her and "hurt [her] in so many ways", adding the experience and impact had been "horrific". In mitigation for Mohamed Badreddin, Sue Hirst said he had grown up in a warzone in Syria. Glenn Gatland, for Omar Badreddin, said he had been "haunted" by his experiences in Syria, having lost an older brother in the conflict, and felt "deep shame and guilt" for being in prison. Robin Patton, for Aleboud, of Tilmouth Park Road in Throckley, said he had been "physically puny" after undergoing treatment for a recurring childhood cancer and had not been a leader of the group. In mitigation for Al Soaimi, Joe Hedworth said his family moved to the UK from Kuwait in 2016, adding he was "immature and easily led". 'There to be used' Judge Rippon said the Badreddin brothers, of Middle Garth in Newcastle, led the group and "quickly identified" the girl could be "manipulated" and "groomed". She said they treated her like a "toy" and found it "entertaining", exploiting her and using her for sex. "Even when she begged you to treat her more kindly and told you truthfully she was harming herself and could not cope, you made fun of her," Judge Rippon told the brothers. She said she accepted the girl had told them she was 15 when she was actually 13, but the "reality" was "none of you cared how old she was". The girl tried to learn their language and started reading the Quran in an attempt to befriend the men, and in return she was "abused and passed around", the judge said. The men, the first three of whom must sign the sexual offenders' register for life and Al Soaimi for 10 years, received the following sentences: Omar Badreddin, 26, for five counts of rape, jailed for 18 years Mohamed Badreddin, 23, for six counts of rape and one count of assault by penetration, jailed for 13 years Huzaefa Aleboud, 23, for assault by penetration, two counts of rape and assault occasioning actual bodily harm, jailed for five and a half years Hamoud Al Soaimi, 21, for three counts of sexual assault and one assault by penetration, jailed for two years suspended for two years with 180 hours unpaid work The Badreddin brothers' sentences also included a year in jail each for violent disorder after they threw bottles and charged at police when a Black Lives Matter group clashed with North East Frontline Patriots in Newcastle city centre on 13 June 2020. A restraining order was also made banning each defendant from contacting the two victims and several other girls, or referring to them on social media. In 2015 and 2016, Newsnight followed the story of the Badreddin family, who were Syrian refugees who had settled in the UK. During the year, their son Omar was tried for sexual assault and found not guilty. Two years afterwards, in 2018 and 2019, Omar Badreddin and his brother Mohamed committed multiple counts of rape. Mubarek Ali, then 29 and his brother Ahdel 'Eddie' Ali, 24, led the gang of seven men, which operated in Telford, Shropshire, that preyed on 100 young girls between 2006 and 2009. The town was a hub of abuse which saw up to 1,000 girls, some as young as 11, fall victim to sex gangs over a four-decade period. Over a three-year period, the Ali brothers' gang targeted schoolgirls who they controlled as child prostitutes by giving them alcohol, food and money. The Ali brothers were found guilty in 2012 of numerous offences against four girls aged from 13 to 17, including rape, sexual activity with a child, inciting and controlling child prostitution and trafficking children for sex. Mubarek Ali was jailed for 14 years and Ahdel Ali was sentenced to an 18-year jail term after a eight week trial at Stafford Crown Court. Mubarek was released automatically part way through his sentence in 2017, but was sent back to prison just under a year later after breaking his licence conditions. His brother Ahdel was first released in late 2020 when halfway through his 18-year jail term. But he was recalled to jail just seven months later for breaching his licence conditions, believed to be around the use of a mobile phone. MailOnline can reveal that Ahdel, now aged 35, had a parole hearing in December 2023 based on prison documents and the decision was to keep him in jail. He will be eligible for another appeal in two-years time. In respect of Mubarek, now 40, his new appeal will be his third since being recalled. The panel at his second in May 2022 found it 'could find no evidence to suggest that his level of risk towards others had reduced. During the brothers' trial the court heard that the two men systematically groomed young girls in such a way that eventually they could exploit them sexually for their own gain and gratification. 'This is one of a number of high profile trials which have taken place recently across the UK and we are satisfied with the convictions in this case. 'Ahdel Ali and Mubarek Ali targeted these girls because of their vulnerability and then systematically groomed them in such a way that eventually they could exploit them sexually for their own gain and gratification.' Five other men from the Telford area pleaded guilty to charges they faced prior to the start of their trials and were jailed for between two-and-a-half and seven years. The operation to snare the sex abusers, 'Operation Chalice', was one of the largest in West Mercia Police history. A team of up to 50 officers worked on the inquiry to bring the men to justice. In 2018, one of the victims of abusers in Telford spoke anonymously on Good Morning Britain to Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid about their ordeal. Telford has the third highest number of child sexual offences recorded in the UK, just behind Blackpool and Rotherham, according to the Home Office. The woman, going by the name of 'Holly', described how she was sold 'countless times' for sex. She said: 'I was abused from the ages of 14-18, my abuse started with boys my own age, who went on to sell my phone number to older men. 'And from there it was just a whirlwind of rape every day basically. I was going into the doctors and the youth sexual health clinic to get the morning after pill, probably twice a week, and nobody even questioned anything. 'I had two abortions, still nothing was said to me. I was in cars that were stopped by the police and they asked me no questions of why I was there with a much older man... it got to the point where I tried to commit suicide, and still nobody asked me any questions about what was going on in my life and why I was reacting the way I was reacting.' Holly added: 'The way I got out of it was by actually leaving Telford and isolating myself from my friends and family and everybody else that I knew. 'The reason why it went on for so long was because the men were blackmailing me saying that they were going to rape my family members or burn my house down.' Asked by Susanna Reid how many men she thinks were responsible for the abuse she suffered, 'Holly' said: 'I couldn't even put a figure on it, it's that many. The authority in charge of the town, Telford and Wrekin Council, acted on just half of the warnings they received, it emerged at the time 'Holly' spoke out. They were given 715 child sexual exploitation referrals in three years, but just 324 of the cases were referred. Authorities had been warned of abuse a decade before Operation Chalice.
