This is not a new concept in aviation. During WW2, the Luftwaffe joined two He 111s together to create the He 111Z "Zwilling", or twin, and used as a glider tug. Another example is the US F-82 Twin Mustang night and escort fighter which combined two P-51s. Stratolaunch is only the biggest one yet.

It looks like it's just begging to get ripped and split apart in the middle by a strong gust of wind.

Yeah, I can't imagine the stress on the center wing spars. This is where the payload is attached, so I suppose the engineers designed for this. Obviously this plane can't do any sharp or high-G maneuvers. One thing I thought was strange was the horizontal stabilizers between the two fuselages weren't connected as in other twin-boom aircraft like the F-82, P-38 Lightning or C-119 Flying Boxcar. I'm not an aeronautical engineer, so maybe it has something to do with airflow when a payload such as a rocket is slung under the center wing. Hopefully this thing will work and not crash and burn.
