Duck crossing
Yesterday my wife and I were leaving a shopping mall. We were almost ready to pull out onto the street when we saw a mother duck with about 10 newly hatched babies making their way across the parking lot. We stopped and were watching them when my wife asked me where they were going. I replied that she was heading for water. It occurred to us at the same time that the nearest water was just south of us, across the busiest street in town. Four lanes of traffic, moving fast. And mama duck was heading right for it.
I told Marta to park. We escorted the ducks across the parking lot to 6th St. She jumped down from the curb, waited for the babies to jump down, gathered them in a tight little bunch, and then proceeded to cross the street. I was on her left and so stepped out into the first lane of traffic and stopped them. The next lane some guy was coming fast so I stepped out and stopped him. He was a grumpy looking guy and was glaring at me like "how dare you". About that time mama duck and family waddled out from between the cars and the guy got a big grin on his face and gave me a thumbs up. Marta stopped the other two lanes coming the other way. Every one was grinning. The ducks made it across OK and we followed them through a motel parking lot and across a bicycle path at which point they entered a swampy area full of water, tules, and tall grass, which was mama's goal. Silly, I know. But it brightened our day.

I don't like ducks. They're usually black and ugly and have the most annoying squawk. Hell, they don't even taste good to me, oily and kind of gamey no matter how you cook them. Another one of gawds little mistakes. Fuck the ducks, ida run the little bastards over.

Yeah, I hate the geese too. American or Canadian it don't matter. What really ticks me off is they all fly in a group squawking like mad really high in the sky so you can't shoot-em. Take a well aimed artillery burst to bring the feathery fuckers down. Fuck the geese and the ducks.

Sea gulls are the birds i'd like to see shot.
Dump-ducks squawking and causing a ruckus at every public food vendor on every beach, shitting all over cars. Fuck the ducks too. |

That's cockle-warming and all, but be careful. They're just ducks, and there's plenty more where they came from.

I like the cuter wildlife as much as anyone. Wrecked a car trying to miss a skunk, once. It just isn't worth it. Had there been oncoming traffic, I might be dead and might have taken others with me.

I know that a lot of people frown on necroposting, but I had to bump this excellent thread. Yeah, I like animals. |

No, I just remember some VNN members mentioning it a couple of years ago. I believe it was Jimmy Marr, but I forget the specific post.

That's good to know, my recollection about that was hazy. Fred hasn't posted in a long time, though.
