It was difficult for me to understand at times, too-- Stanley Kubrick's movies are like that. 2001 was based on Arthur C. Clarke's original novel The Sentinel. It was mainly a landmark film in terms of special effects and a story that differed from previous sci-fi that focused on bug-eyed alien monsters and the like. I thought the movie dragged on a little too long and HAL 9000 the computer was the most interesting character. The sequel, 2010, released in 1984 starring Roy Scheider actually had a better plot, dialogue and acting.
