Tourist robbed in cop shop

The Mother City's special World Cup Magistrate's Court dealt with its first three cases this week, including a theft from a Japanese tourist in a police station, police said on Thursday.

The theft took place at the Caledon Square station in the city centre on Tuesday, police head of 2010 operations in the Western Cape, Major-General Robbie Roberts, said.

"The tourist was in the CSC (community service centre) in Cape Town police station and he left his bag unattended.

"He went up to the third floor and when he returned, he found that his bag was gone."

Police had used closed-circuit television cameras to identify the suspect, a woman, who was arrested.

6 held for robbing soccer fan

Six people who allegedly robbed a hotel in Mpumalanga and held up a Chilean soccer fan were arrested in White River, police said on Saturday.

Captain Leonard Hlathi said the men allegedly robbed the Pine Inn hotel in White River of R4 000 and held up 33-year-old Sergio Divona at gun point, before fleeing with his shoes and cellphone on June 6.

They were arrested on Thursday after police found them in possession of both stolen items.

Hlathi said a 9mm pistol, believed to have been used during the robbery, was recovered.

Men sentenced for robbery of foreign journos

Three men have been sentenced for the armed robbery of three foreign journalists in Magaliesburg, the National Prosecuting Authority said on Saturday.

"Two of the accused were convicted of robbery with aggravating circumstances and sentenced to 15 years imprisonment each," said advocate Menzi Simelane, adding that a third was convicted of receiving stolen property and was sentenced to four years imprisonment.

Bright Madzudzu, a Zimbabwean national, Obunna Ndzubuisi Nigerian national and George Magubane also from Zimbabwe, were convicted and sentenced in Protea Regional Court in Soweto on Friday night.

One Spanish and two Portuguese journalists - Antonio Simoes, Rui Gustavo and Miquel Cerano - were asleep in their room at the Nutbush Boma lodge in Magaliesburg on Wednesday morning when the robbers broke into the room.

Armed with a firearm and knife, the robbers stole items including cameras, laptops, clothes, a passport and cash in Euros and US dollars.

The police have recovered some of the items.

The estimated value of the stolen property is R388,000.

Eight cases have now been heard in some of the 56 courts dedicated to deal with all criminal cases relating to the Fifa 2010 World Cup soccer tournament.

World Cup threat to SA's vulture population

A belief that smoking a vulture's brains brings powers of clairvoyance to the smoker - supposedly useful for predicting sports scores - has conservationists worried about a further decline in the endangered birds' population during the World Cup.

Mark Anderson, the director of Birdlife South Africa, said the practice, performed in order to foresee the results of sports matches and Lotto draws, was "one of the main factors" contributing to "major decline" in vulture populations.

With the World Cup, conservationists fear an increased use of vulture muti for betting on soccer games.

A study conducted by Futureworks! and Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, titled Survey of the Trade in Vultures for the Traditional Health Industry in South Africa, found that vultures are used in traditional medicines for a variety of purposes "but are believed to be most effective for providing clairvoyant powers, foresight and increased intelligence".

Key findings of the report state: "The main drivers of demand for these uses are betting and gambling, for improved business success, and intelligence in schoolchildren.

"Vulture is also prescribed by traditional healers for various ailments, including headaches."

TV crew robbed

Burglars stole camera equipment worth $70 000 from a New Zealand television crew covering the Soccer World Cup in South Africa, police and the network said on Sunday.

The theft took place at a hotel in northwestern Rustenburg, where the All Whites are due to play Slovakia on Tuesday, when a door was forced open with a jemmy (short crowbar) while the crew was out having dinner, TVNZ said on its website.

The stolen equipment includes a camera, sound and lighting equipment, satellite equipment and laptop worth about $70 000.

"It's a very timely and sobering reminder of how vigilant all Kiwis travelling to South Africa for the FIFA World Cup need to be," said Paul Patrick, the editor of the network's ONE News.

A police spokesperson confirmed that it had received a complaint from a male journalist from New Zealand.

"He laid a charge of housebreaking and theft," Colonel Junior Metsi told AFP.

The police could not confirm the value of the equipment.

"We only know that it's the equipment that they are using to do the work," Metsi said.

The New Zealanders are the latest victims of crime against international journalists covering the World Cup. A Chinese news crew was held at gunpoint last week while armed robbers also broke into the hotel room housing journalists covering the Portuguese team.

Durban police on Monday vowed to arrest those who led the protest at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Sunday night.

"We are busy investigating and we believe that some will be arrested soon because they are known," Brigadier Phindile Radebe said.

According to the Associated Press about 300 security stewards protested about low wages after the game between Germany and Australia.

The AP quoted one of the stewards, Fanak Falakhebuengu, as saying he had heard they would be paid R1 500 a day, but were only getting R190.

"They were supposed to give us R1 500, that's what Fifa told us and they gave us R190."

Radebe said spectators had already left the stadium when the protest started.

"The police managed to move them away from the stadium, but they regrouped and continued with the protest."

Police fired rubber bullets at them.

Cops cover every inch around Durban stadium

Durban's Moses Mabhida Stadium appeared to be the venue for a police convention on Wednesday as thousands of officers swarmed the precinct.

They were positioned at every turn and lined up along most perimeter and adjacent roads to provide security for the World Cup match between Spain and Switzerland.

Police officials on the ground told The Mercury they believed about 4 000 officers had been
deployed to the stadium on Wednesday, more than double the number that did duty at Sunday?s match between Germany and Australia.

Some had been brought in from other parts of the country, such as the North West and Western Cape provinces, and KwaZulu-Natal inland areas such as Ulundi.

In addition, the SA National Defence Force was roped in to safeguard Fifa accreditation centres at the King's Park swimming pool and at the old drive-in site.

It was estimated that at least 500 officers were monitoring the crowds along Masabalala Yengwa (NMR) Avenue and Isaiah Ntshangase (Walter Gilbert) Road alone. About 100 were seated along the perimeter of the field, monitoring the spectators, having replaced the security guards who were fired this week after riots over wages after Sunday night's match.

Rows of police vehicles and motorbikes were seen in a parking area across the road from the stadium's Isaiah Ntshangase Road entrance.

Could someone explain to these "businessmen" that killing potential customers for their body parts is unlikely to result in increased business.
