Brazil’s new health minister isn’t Jewish, but some news outlets say he is

By Marcus M. Gilban April 17, 2020 1:17 pm

RIO DE JANEIRO (JTA) — Brazil’s new health minister isn’t Jewish, but the Brazilian media were quick to point out that Dr. Nelson Teich had the support of the South American country’s Jewish community. Some outlets even erroneously called him Jewish.

That angered many local Jews, who argued that the news was exaggerated — and in at least one case, possibly anti-Semitic.
(...)
Teich had supported Bolsonaro’s presidential bid in 2018 — an unorthodox and right-wing campaign that split the nation, including its Jewish community.

From the minute the Rio de Janeiro native was tapped for the post, some groups on social media started to question whether he was Jewish or not based on his apparently German-sounding surname.
(...)
Veja magazine, one of the most influential in South America, highlighted the new minister’s friendly ties with a renowned Jewish mogul.

“Teich is a friend of contractor Meyer Nigri, owner of the Tecnisa construction company. It was also Nigri who opened the doors for Bolsonaro to approach the exclusive nucleus of the Jewish community of Sao Paulo in the 2018 campaign,” according to a Veja article published Thursday. “The presidency’s communication secretary Fabio Wajngarten is another influential name among Sao Paulo Jews who endorsed Teich’s nomination for the position.”

For Persio Bider, who presides over the Organized Jewish Youth organization, the Jewish references were a step too far.

“The sewer of anti-Semitism opens up again, with several scoundrels judging the new minister by his alleged religion and not by his professional history,” Bider told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency. “Does anyone know the religion of the other ministers by any chance? Of course not, but it shows much more about how anti-Semitism is rooted in all layers of society.”
(...)
“Some reports have highlighted that Teich would have been put in office by the influence of the Jewish community. Others label him as a Jew. Even if it were true, what is the population’s interest in knowing the religion of a health minister?” the group wrote on Facebook. “Reinforcing stereotypes contributes to anti-Semitism. We will not accept prejudice and conspiracy theories.”
(...)
Since taking office Bolsonaro — sometimes compared to President Donald Trump for his off-the-cuff manner, right-wing outlook and disregard for presidential norms — has made overtures to the Jewish community, visiting Israel and hosting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last year.

Jews must see Latin American countries and the poor people there as easy pickings
Hispanics in these countries are not as educated or wealthy as Americans and many are religious and more likely to trust a religious leaders or other person in authority. Rights for women and children are weaker too so this opens the door for Jewish sexual predators. I wish a lot of the Metoo crowd in America could get a lot of this information about the sexual abuses of Jews in Latin America.
Gosh I haven't seen any stores in the New York Times.

First Jewish president of Brazilian Congress victimized by anti-Semitic slurs online

May 21, 2020 3:59 pm

RIO DE JANEIRO (JTA) — The head of Brazil’s National Congress, the first Jewish lawmaker to hold the post in the country’s legislature, was a victim of anti-Semitic attacks on social media.

The slurs against Sen. Davi Alcolumbre were published this week on the Facebook profile of a user called Jota Junior, which was removed after the comments were made public.

“I hope God continues to enlighten President Jair Bolsonaro because he has a Jew who is at the head of the Senate at his disadvantage,” the message said. “Jews are miserly. Jews are wicked and think only of their well-being.”

Facebook deleted the user’s account after the Brazilian Israelite Confederation denounced the anti-Semitic post on Tuesday.

“It’s worrying to see one more attack on people just because they are Jewish,” said the confederation’s president, Fernando Lottenberg. “We won’t accept the normalization of anti-Semitism in our country.”

Quote:
Policing Black Bodies: Do Black Lives Matter? A Conversation about Policing in Brazil and the United States

Black men in the United States between 18 and 44 are more than three times as likely as white men the same age to be killed by a police officer. While black men make up only about six percent of the U.S. population, last year they accounted for one-third of the unarmed people killed by police. In July, the president of the United States stood before an audience of law enforcement officials and actively encouraged police violence. Attorney General Sessions is working overtime to roll back Obama-era policies that he has deemed too "soft" on crime.

In Brazil, where people of African descent make up nearly 53 percent of the population, a similar human rights crisis is underway. Last year, police in Rio de Janeiro killed an average of five people per day and the numbers in 2017 are on track to be higher. Violence in some favelas (slums) has threatened young people’s access to health and education as drug gangs and police exchange fire in the middle of communities. Police violence against black communities is so grave it is often referred to as the genocide of black people.

RIO DE JANEIRO (JTA) — A Brazilian journalist implied on CNN that the Jewish community was involved in choosing the country’s health minister.

“Nelson Teich was aided by people who are part of the Jewish community and supported him at the helm of the Ministry of Health,” political analyst Basilia Rodrigues said during a live broadcast of CNN Brasil’s “Live CNN” show. “They were at the table to choose the minister of health: businessmen, doctors and Jews.”

Teich lasted only two weeks at the helm of the Health Ministry after he disagreed with President Jair Bolsonaro’s plans for reopening gyms and beauty parlors, BBC reported.

CNN Brasil released a note saying “We never intended to cause any discomfort to the Jewish community, which has our admiration and friendship,” Yahoo Brasil reported.

That statement wasn’t enough for the Rio Jewish federation, which called for a full retraction of Rodrigues’ comments.

University professor in Argentina offers bonus to ‘whoever finds a poor Jew’

July 6, 2020 11:34 am

(JTA) — A university professor in Argentina told his students that he “will give a bonus to whoever finds a poor Jew.”

During an online class on international politics at the 21st Century Business University located in Cordoba, Argentina, Prof. Esteban Lizondo also said that the creation of the State of Israel was a concession to the “Zionist lobby” in exchange for money, according to local reports.

One of Lizondo’s students, who is not named, recorded the lecture and posted it on social media. The student also reported the incident to the Cordoba office of the Argentine Jewish umbrella organization DAIA, which complained to the university.

The money that Jews have, the professor said, also “demonstrates the power that the Jews have.” He added: “They are capable of handling business and financial enterprises, to continue enriching themselves. And not for nothing, go fight a Jew for money.”
