Default "The Lives of a Bengal Lancer" (1935)

One of the most underrated and neglected film classics of all time is The Lives of a Bengal Lancer, which was released in 1935. It is hard to find today, although I remember watching a censored version of it on broadcast television in the 1970s (edited to remove all the awful "racist" stuff).

It is said that Adolf Hitler viewed it three times. One online movie site notes that:
Quote:
Film critic Adolf Hitler on why Lives of a Bengal Lancer was one of his favourite films:

In 1937 Hitler told the British Foreign Secretary Lord Halifax that Lives of a Bengal Lancer was one of his favorite films. According to the Fuhrer, It showed a "handful of Britons holding a continent in thrall. That was how a superior race must behave and the film was compulsory viewing for the S.S."

(Source: Ivone Kirkpatrick, The Inner Circle [London: Macmillan], 1959, p.97. Kirkpatrick was a senior Foreign Office official and diplomat who specialised in German affairs. He was sent by Churchill to interview Rudolf Hess after the later landed in Scotland in 1941.)

If you have an Adobe flash player, you may watch the complete, unabridged version of the film here:

The Lives Of A Bengal Lancer 1935 - Gary Cooper, Franchot Tone, Richard Cromwell, C. Aubrey Smith, Kathleen Burke, Douglas Dumbrille

. . you know, the ancient Hindus used to be Aryan , however I agree that what is left of them is merely a 'jungle'-religion . .

The ancient Aryans mixed with the dark-skinned peoples of south-Asia ( of which the Aborigines are descendants ) , so they became 'darker'.

Today they are on the same level as jungle-dwellers . . .

The British raj (which included the modern countries of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Burma, Nepal and more) had a population of nearly 400,000,000 (four hundred million) in 1939. The British governed this immense region with about 200,000 men, about half of whom were soldiers and the other half bureaucrats. That is one White man for every 2,000 Indians.

Those who claim that Whites are not superior to non-Whites, only "different," are deluded.

Having superior technology is one of the advantages to belonging to a superior race.

Yup . . . the dark races of this world have never really championed technology . .

The Negroes , Aborigines , the dark-skinned Indo-Iranians of for example India and Pakistan or even dark-skinned middle Easterners.

Those are the 'darker peoples of this world'.

Negroes and Abos are naturally coloured, the peoples on which they have left their footprints ( Islamic lands ( North-Africa ; the Middle East ) which miscegenated after the Arab slave-trade ; the Indo-Iranians who mixed with the dark-skinned peoples of South-Asia) also contain a huge deal of 'coloured' genes. . .

I admit that for , for example, Asians it's a bit different but I do not like Asians at all . .

As soon as the groups mentioned above miscegenated ( the ancient peoples of the Middle East and even North-Africa were unmixed Caucasians , the ancient Indo-Iranians also were unmixed . . ) their culture got "stuck".

They became unproductive et cetera . .

But hey . . "We iz all equal . . ."

Is there any truth to Hitler also liking Snow White and The Seven Dwarves?

I do not have any specific info on AH and Snow White, tbh.

However, The Goebbels Diaries includes the following:
"Frau [] visits me this afternoon. We see the American Disney film Snow White, a magnificent artistic achievement. A fairy tale for grown-ups, thought out into the last detail and made with a great love of humanity and nature. An artistic delight!" (Entry for Monday, 12 February 1940).

I bet he did . . since it was based on European mythology.

. . . apart from that I heard Hitler had a faible for pale women.

Default "The Lives of a Bengal Lancer" (1935)

I remember the movie well, and had the usual rip-roaring 30's charm, but I was bothered by Gary Cooper playing an Englishman, and another American played an Englishman as well.

A lot of 30's movies had this. Mutiny on the Bounty: Clark Gable as English? And much of the cast was American. Not that I'm knocking Gable's performance. Also, his uniform isn't 18th century, it's more like a modern sports jacket with white trim.

You could say Gone With the Wind got even, since Leslie Howard, Olivia Dehaviland, and Vivian Leigh were English. Interesting that English actors usually play southerners better then northern (New York) American actors.

When Gone With the Wind premiered in Atlanta, a band was playing Dixie. Vivian Leigh beamed. "Oh, they're playing that song from the movie. Isn't that sweet?"

English accents are not very different from Southern ones. Southern accents are also similar to Australian ones: both have a kind of "drawl".

.. as far as I'm informed American Southern accents sound a bit more British than for example the English spoken in California . .

There is the theory that the American South was linguistically influenced by Scotland since many people in that area alledgedly had that ancestry . .

I'm German but due to studies I know about accents in the English-speaking world . .

For example , the word 'not' , as in 'I am not old' , Southerners pronounce similar to Brits like 'nawt' as far as I know while other Americans pronounce it like 'nut' . .

American English in the broad sense was influenced by the proununciation of Ireland ( the U.S. did start out as an English colony but from about 1800 on more and more Irish moved there even to the point that Irish pronounciation of English became the norm in the U.S. . . until today the second largest group of Euro-Americans are of Irish heritage , next to Germans who are the most numerous and also moved there in masses from a certain time on . .)

Irish people have that same accent in their language as Americans . .

As for Australia , they are closer to their British heritage . .

North America ( U.S.A. , Canada ) was heavily influenced by Irish immigrants . .

Actually, I pronounce "not" as "nawt." I've personally never heard it spoken as "nut" by any American because that is, well...the word "nut." The closest I have heard "not" pronounced as "nut" is by someone speaking English in a Russian accent.

Thanks for these useful words ,Ray . .

sry , couldn't resist with the vid . . .

. . what I meant is demonstrated in this vid.
( in the beginning :'to be or not to be' )

Arnie ,despite not being American-born himself pronounces it like "nut".

Sorry if the that comparison is a bit strange though . .

It is my impression as a German anyways

On a side note . . how about making a film about today's India ( similar to the one mentioned about Brits ruling India ,just that it would show how Indians behave "by themselves" . .) ?

I think that would maybe have a larger effect than the alledged effect the movie showing Brits governing Indians would have. .

Now , I'm not a fan of colonialism but if we're just talking about the effect a movie showing a Caucasian people governing a 'mud'-people can have , maybe a movie showing to what savages the brown-skinned Indians have degenerated would maybe even have a BIGGER effect . .?

Someone go and make such a movie ! !
