Roma Woman Wins Case against Bulgaria at Strasbourg

Society | October 23, 2012, Tuesday| 236 views

Bulgaria has been found guilty of failing to protect the right to life and of discrimination against a female Roma citizen, who filed a case at the Strasbourg Court of Human Rights.

The European Court of Human Rights has determined that Bulgarian authorities failed to properly investigate a violent assault against the woman that left her disabled.

Back in 1999, Yolanda Yotova was shot in the chest by attackers who have yet not been identified, much less put to trial.

At the same time, the European Court has found that Bulgarian authorities possessed information about simmering ethnic tensions in Yotova's village of Aglen near Lukovit in northwestern Bulgaria.

Although preliminary investigations started right away after the attack, investigators stopped proceedings multiple times and performed a number of actions with unmotivated delay, said the court.

In addition the Human Rights Court has found that there are grounds to believe that the crime has been performed on racial grounds, something that investigators failed to properly consider, in spite of the fact they were aware of recent Bulgarian-Roma clashes in the area.

Bulgaria is to pay Yotova indemnities worth EUR 12,000, as well as to cover expenses for the proceedings at Strasbourg.

Bulgaria ethnic Turkish party wants to trace attack "mastermind"

SOFIA | Sun Jan 20, 2013 7:32pm GMT

Reuters) - Bulgaria's ethnic Turkish party, whose leader escaped unhurt when a man pointed a gun to his head on stage at a party congress, said on Sunday it wanted police to investigate who was the "political mastermind" behind the attack.

The Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) accused the police and security services of failing to protect Ahmed Dogan from the man who tried on Saturday to shoot him twice before being wrestled to the ground by security guards.

"The main goal of the investigation would be to focus on finding out who was the political mastermind of this attack," said Lyutvi Mestan, who replaced Dogan as MRF party leader as previously expected on Saturday.

"The authorities are working on the lead that this was an individual action of a criminal .... this is a huge stain on Bulgaria's image," he told a news conference.

The party called for an international investigation into the assault by the 25-year-old man, who police identified as Oktay Enimehmedov, an ethnic Turk from the Black Sea town of Burgas.

Police said the gun used during the attack was a non-lethal gas pistol and deputy chief prosecutor Borislav Sarafov told reporters Enimehmedov faces up to five years in prison for hooliganism and up to six years for making a death threat.

Political parties in Bulgaria strongly condemned the attack against Dogan, one the most influential political figures in the European Union's poorest member.

"The attack against Dogan is not a hooliganism. This is an assault against the national security. I categorically reject any claims that the incident was staged," said Bulgarian Socialist Party leader Sergei Stanishev.

Prime Minister Boiko Borisov told reporters: "This is a very disturbing event and should not happen in today's Bulgaria."

The liberal MRF party represents ethnic Turks and other Muslims who make up about 12 percent of the Balkan country's population of 7.3 million. Dogan was named honorary chairman on Saturday of the party he has led for 23 years.

Most Muslims in Bulgaria are not recent immigrants but are a centuries-old community, mostly ethnic Turkish descendants of Ottoman rule.

The MRF was a junior partner in the previous Socialist-led cabinet in Bulgaria, which is due to hold parliamentary elections in July.

CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts - The Bulgarian government on Tuesday made a mockery of its political independence by publicly implicating Lebanon's Hezbollah in last year's attack on an Israeli bus in the resort city of Burgas, despite the fact that its "official investigation is still going on", Sofia has yet to make an official announcement and there is an absence of trustworthy evidence to back the claim.

Under pressure for months by Washington and Tel Aviv to name Hezbollah as the culprit for the attack that killed five Israelis and a Bulgarian bus driver, as well as the terrorist carrying the bomb, Sofia has appeased Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who within half hour of the bombing last July publicly pointed the finger at Hezbollah and Iran.

Unsurprisingly, Netanyahu was extremely gratified by the news

from Sofia and wasted no time in calling on Europeans to put Hezbollah on their list of terrorist organizations, a significant move that would likely exacerbate the present civil rights of Muslims in Europe, particularly those who are involved in charitable fund raising for Hezbollah's plethora of social welfare services in Lebanon.

The US government likewise conveniently interpreted as "conclusive" the preliminary finding in the Burgas investigation that the "military formation of Hezbollah might be involved" in that attack, to paraphrase carefully chosen words from Bulgarian Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov.

According to a Bulgarian expert, Professor Vladimir Chukov, Tsvetanov made a "hybrid statement" that "like Britain" makes the distinction between Hezbollah as a group and its "military wing". "This is a hybrid situation that goes on to suggest that there is little chance that Bulgaria will name Hezbollah and Iran as culprits," Professor Chukov has told the Bulgarian media.

Tell that to the mainstream media that wasted no time in its avalanche of reports that Bulgaria has implicated Hezbollah in the Burgas bombing. Case in point, in the various reports in the Wall Street Journal, London's Guardian, BBC, etc, there is virtually no mention of the fact that there is no official position of the Bulgarian government as of yet, and that the investigation is still on-going. According to Professor Chukov, the interior ministry's news leak was meant simply as "a test". Yet by all indications this is a poor and politically motivated move by an official of the Bulgarian government.

Opposition's stern warning
"It is obvious that Bulgaria's government has chosen a political approach and is only repeating the interpretation alleged by Israel on the very next day following the attack, when the investigation had not even started," said Sergey Stanishev, the head of Bulgarian Socialist Party, who is also the Chair of Party of European Socialists. "The investigation is currently under way and there is no way one can be talking about decisive evidence regarding the direct perpetrators, much less regarding the organization that is behind this tragic event ... This is absolutely unjustified in view of national security and the risks that are taken with respect to people in Bulgaria."

There is no dearth of suspicion in Bulgaria and beyond that the government official's statement that the bombing "was most likely" the work of Hezbollah militants and that there are "obvious links" to Hezbollah is based less on hard facts and more on external political pressure. According to Minister Tsvetanov, two individuals - one Canadian and the other Australian - who have lived in Lebanon since 2006 and 2010 respectively, have been linked to the attack and "there is data showing" their "obvious links to Lebanon."

Tsvetanov's statements are backed by Rob Wainwright, the director of Europol, claiming that there is "reasonable assumption" based on "forensic evidence, intelligence sources and patterns in past attacks" that "point to Hezbollah's involvement." Not so according to Stanishev, who has labeled as "poor evidence" the data cited by officials to point accusatory fingers at Hezbollah. In fact, there is a great deal of contrary evidence to suggest the attack was a carefully orchestrated Israeli "false flag" operation aimed at smearing Hezbollah and Iran and pressuring the European Union to brand Hezbollah as a terrorist organization.

False flag evidence ignored
The distinct possibility of an Israeli 'false flag' operation can be garnered by a careful and methodical examination of the public information, including the photographs, amateur videos and instant reports on the bus attack that occurred at exactly 5:30 pm last July 18, on the anniversary of the 1994 bombing in Argentina that Israel insists was the work of Iran and Hezbollah. That was perfect timing for Israel's propaganda machine.

As stated in this author's investigative article written immediately after the bus attack, there are at least 10 valid reasons to question the official story that a busload of Israeli tourists was the target of a terrorist bombing. [1] Lest we forget, the autopsy results in Sofia have shown that the dead terrorist was "white and had light eyes" and initially was identified as a member of al-Qaeda, much to the chagrin of Israelis who have shown zero interest in any suspect other than Hezbollah-Iran. [2]

To reiterate the gist of this author's own probe of this matter, a good deal of evidence exists that suggest the targeted bus was empty and the only passengers hurt were inside the adjacent bus and received light injuries.

This author has carefully examined dozens upon dozens of photographs of the Israeli tourists in question, who no doubt would have received much worse facial and other bodily injuries if they were inside the targeted bus. After all, the severed head of the bomber had been discovered some 60 meters away from the bus and an instant video shows the bus in full flames, ie, impossible for the majority of 42 purported passengers, especially the elderly females seen on stretchers en route to the hospital in various photos, to escape with little or no bodily harm, thus warranting the following 10 questions:

1. Why the amateur video of the bus taken within seconds of the explosion doesn't show anyone jumping down the bus?
2. Why so many passengers survived with only light hand and foot injuries in an explosion involving (according to the Bulgarian officials) three kilograms of TNT in front of the bus?
3. Why did the Israeli group known as Zakar appear immediately on the site and collected the bodies of the dead, per several images, when this should have been done by Bulgarians? Why was this group at the airport at that time? And where were the Bulgarian security officials during the whole time monopolized by the Zakar individuals (in yellow uniforms)? Indeed, the fact that the Bulgarians allowed the Zakar all over the crime scene and move the dead victims (who were then frisked quickly to Israel) speaks volumes about the travesty of police investigation in Bulgaria.
4. Why did the bomb kill the Israelis sitting in the back of the bus (per reports in the Israeli media) while simultaneously killing the bus driver in the front and leaving the vast majority of bus passengers only lightly harmed?
5. Why have some bus witnesses told the media that they tried to get out through the front door but found it locked and managed to get out through a "hole on the side" when both the videos and reports indicate an instant fire following the explosion engulfing the bus?
6. Why is there no report of any injuries to the bus driver in the next bus, which sustained major damage especially on the driver's side? Could the bus driver killed be the one in the second bus?
7. Why was there no extra security precaution even though according to the Israeli media prior to the landing of Israeli passengers the tour company had received a call that they would be "greeted with two bombs"?
8. Why was the trunk of the targeted bus empty and no sign of any luggage (per numerous images that also show the inside of the bus and the absence of any section for luggage contrary to the claim of one of the Israeli passengers who is quoted widely)?
9. Why did the passport and license of purported terrorist remain intact despite the raging fire in the bus?
10. Why did Israel rush all the passengers back to Israel early next morning instead of allowing the Bulgarian investigators to interview them? After all, Israel made no similar attempt to protect the lives of thousands of other Israeli tourists vacationing in Burgas, bottom line since it had no real worries about any terrorist attack against them after having pulled off its spectacular 'false flag' that must surely be a source of current pride among its Mossad intelligence officials.

Mossad agents must be patting themselves on the shoulder now for a job well-done, but then again their script perhaps was too neatly executed, given Netanyahu's instant finger toward Hezbollah and Iran, or the widespread use of a replica bus on full flame, which on closer examination shows to be different from the actual targeted bus.

The Israelis have now mastered the art of political manipulation and their latest victory in Bulgaria simply educates us about why they are ahead of the game and keep winning the battle for the world public opinion.

Iran to pull envoy from Bulgaria following attack accusations

February 10, 2013

(JTA) -- In the wake of accusations that it was involved in the Burgas terror attack, Iran will recall its ambassador to Bulgaria.

Iran also reportedly will downgrade its relations with Bulgaria, according to reports.

The Bulgarian government last week implicated two men with links to the Iranian-backed Hezbollah in the July attack on a bus full of Israeli tourists. Bulgaria's interior minister, Tsvetan Tsvetanov, also said that Hezbollah financed the bomb attack, which killed five Israeli tourists and their Bulgarian driver.

Last Friday, Iran's ambassador to Bulgaria denied Iranian involvement in the attack.

"This has nothing to do with Iran," Gholamreza Bageri told reporters. "We are against any form of terrorism and strongly condemn such actions."

Iran has accused Israel of staging the attack. Israel has blamed Hezbollah and Iran.

Bulgaria orders Hamas deputies out of the country

Fri, 15 Feb 2013 14:58 GMT

Source: reuters // Reuters

SOFIA, Feb 15 (Reuters) - Bulgaria ordered three visiting Palestinian lawmakers from the Islamist movement Hamas to leave the country on Friday, saying they posed a security risk to the EU member state.

The expulsion came a week after Bulgaria blamed Hezbollah, a Lebanese Islamist group, for a bomb attack in the Black Sea city of Burgas last July that killed five Israeli tourists and a Bulgarian driver, fuelling an EU debate over whether it should be blacklisted alongside Hamas.

The European Union, like the United States, has branded Hamas a terrorist group for suicide bombings and other attacks on Israelis since the mid-1990s. Bulgaria's National Security Service said Friday's move was a "preventive measure".

"During their stay in Bulgaria we obtained information that their presence was creating a serious threat to national security," it said in a statement, without elaborating.

The three Hamas lawmakers were hosted by Bulgaria's Centre for Middle East Studies. Its director, Mohd Abuasi, said police officers showed up at their hotel early on Friday and took them to the airport.

"There was great pressure on them to leave," Abuasi said.

In Gaza, a Hamas statement said Bulgarian police had stormed in to deport lawmakers Salah al-Bardaweel, Ismail al-Ashqar and Mushir al-Masri, who flew to Istanbul.

Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov said the Bulgarian government had "no connection whatsoever" to the surprise visit by the Hamas lawmakers, which began on Wednesday and was meant to have lasted into next week.

"They were invited by a non-governmental organisation as Palestinians. Once they arrived, they started to demonstrate their political affiliation," Tsvetanov told TV7 television, saying they only started to say they were Hamas deputies once they were in the country.

Bardaweel told Reuters on Wednesday that the Bulgaria trip was the first time Hamas officials had been admitted to an EU country.

The group won a Palestinian legislative election in 2006 and, after a brief government alliance with secular rivals, carried out an armed takeover of the territory of Gaza in 2007. (Reporting by Tsvetelia Tsolova in Sofia and Nidal al-Mughrabi in Gaza; Editing by Eva Kuehnen and Jon Boyle)

Bulgaria presses EU to toughen stance on Hezbollah

Mon, 18 Feb 2013 21:17 GMT

Source: reuters // Reuters

* Bulgaria wants EU solidarity over Burgas attack

* Says strong message crucial for EU security

* Sidesteps issue of blacklisting Hezbollah (Adds interview with Mladenov)

By Justyna Pawlak

BRUSSELS, Feb 18 (Reuters) - Bulgaria urged European governments on Monday to take a harder stance towards Hezbollah after blaming the Lebanese Islamist movement for a bus bombing that killed five Israelis at a Bulgarian Black Sea resort last year.

But the country's Foreign Minister Nikolai Mladenov cautioned European states not to be in a rush to brand the Lebanese group as a terrorist organisation, saying careful consideration was needed of potential consequences in Beirut.

Bulgaria's implication of Hezbollah in the attack in the city of Burgas has reignited a debate over Europe's approach to the Shi'ite Muslim group.

The European Union has resisted pressure from the United States and Israel to blacklist Hezbollah, arguing this could destabilise a fragile government in Lebanon and contribute to instability in the Middle East.

Hezbollah is a major player in Lebanese politics and its support is vital to the authority of Prime Minister Najib Mikati.

"It is very important for us in Europe to understand that when faced with the threat of terrorism, we need to stand up to it firmly ... and collectively," Mladenov told Reuters in Brussels, where he presented findings of an investigation into the July 2012 Burgas attack to EU foreign ministers.

On his way into the meeting, Mladenov told reporters Europe should take collective measures against Hezbollah.

Asked whether that meant the EU should blacklist the movement, he replied: "Given the fact that we've already made quite firm statements about where we believe the responsibility for that attack lies, I think the answer is quite obvious."

But he said it could take weeks or months before Bulgaria completes its investigation of the attack and shares all necessary information with other EU capitals to build the case for any moves against Hezbollah.

"I don't think we need to rush into this debate, before all the information we have is shared," he told Reuters.

CHOOSING DIRECTION

Other European officials have said there are steps that could be taken short of blacklisting Hezbollah. These could include asking the EU policing agency Europol to coordinate investigations into the group's presence in Europe.

Mladenov said some governments wanted sanctions, such as travel bans and asset freezes, imposed on individual members of Hezbollah implicated in the Burgas attack. "We should look at the whole spectrum (of options)," he said.

Much will depend on evidence provided by Bulgaria linking Hezbollah to the attack, EU diplomats say.

Officials have said, for example, that France appears to have softened its traditionally staunch opposition to blacklisting the group, saying "all options" were on the table, provided the evidence is sufficiently strong.

The U.S. government said this month that Hezbollah must be held to account for the Bulgaria attack, and urged Europe and others to pursue an investigation into the incident.

But many European diplomats are wary that punishing Hezbollah would further radicalise the group and foment tensions.

"They see (Hezbollah) as a movement with a political and social base," said Julien Barnes-Dacey of the European Council on Foreign Relations.

"The fear is that sanctions...may push them into a position when it is no longer in their interest to hold back. It could isolate Hezbollah and therefore potentially empower the hardline elements." (Reporting by Justyna Pawlak; Editing by Michael Roddy)

Bulgaria Reacts with Disdain to Turkish Daily's Scandalous Map

Society | April 24, 2013, Wednesday| 1685 views

The map appears to “occupy” large territories of Bulgaria, among others.

Bulgarian Prime Minister Marin Raykov has strongly criticized the Turkish Milliyet daily for publishing an improvised map that appears to “occupy” large territories of Bulgaria, among others.

Milliyet recently published a map of what it described as “New Turkey”, with the territories going far beyond the actual borders of the country.

The Turkish paper’s article argued in favor of the establishment of a powerful new state within the former Ottoman Empire, according to Bulgarian media. The map includes much of Bulgaria and parts of Greece, Cyprus, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Syria and Iraq.

“I find the map published in the Milliyet paper to be absolutely scandalous,” Raykov told reporters on Wednesday.

“The map is so scandalous that it does not deserve a comment from a Prime Minister, but only his disdain,” he added.

Raykov pointed out that Turkey should not be held responsible for the publication.

“A country should not react to the writings of some newspaper,” he noted.

Raykov pointed out that similar provocations have been also made by media in other countries.

Dangerous far-right party regains political strength in Bulgaria

14 May 2013

Ataka ('Attack' in Bulgarian), a Bulgarian nationalist party - which has openly protested against the Roma minority, and wants to nationalize foreign-owned firms - has emerged as a kingmaker following parliamentary elections in Bulgaria last Sunday. The far-right party captured some 7% of the popular vote, putting it in a position to dictate terms for the formation of Bulgaria’s next ruling coalition as the winning party, GERB, didn’t gain enough seats in the Parliament to form a government on its own. GERB, Bulgaria’s last ruling party stepped down at the height of February protests against unemployment and poor government. The party had implemented tight fiscal policy and austerity measures.

Over the years Ataka's leader, Volen Siderov, has vilified Bulgaria’s large Roma minority, calling for destruction of Roma ghettoes, many of which have no running water or electricity, and obligatory school attendance for Roma children, and obligatory employment for Roma adults. Some Ataka party members wear shirts with swastikas and make Nazi salutes at rallies. In recent years the party was also involved in a fight, which drew international attention, in front of Sofia’s only mosque. Bulgaria also has a big Turkish minority. The Roma and Turkish minorities combined account for over 10% of Bulgaria’s population. According to some reports there are around 1 million Muslims in Bulgaria, a country of 7.5 million. DPS, a political party representing in large extent the Muslim minority, came in third in the elections with 10% of the vote.

Ataka’s appeal has been greatest with Bulgaria’s poor and disenfranchised, who are frustrated with the country’s weak economy, seemingly rampant corruption, and an entrenched national elite unable to change the situation. He has said Bulgaria should leave the EU because Brussels wants to exploit the country as a source of cheap labour. Prior to the most recent elections the party was gradually losing votes and importance, but the current political situation in Bulgaria made it possible for Ataka to reemerge as a strong political party, receiving the vote of those who wouldn’t trust the two major political parties - GERB and the Bulgarian Socialist Party. At the start of the year Ataka had only 1% popular support, but Sidorov’s appeals to national pride and his calls for an end to foreign concessions and nationalizations have drawn increasing support, but worried international investors.

Ataka’s success follows the rise of the Golden Dawn neo-Nazi party in neighboring Greece, and Jobbik in Hungary, which pushes an ideology of racial purity and national pride. Commenting on the results Siderov said that one day he will be Bulgaria's Prime Minister.

Novinite - 23.09.2013

True to their pledge, Bulgarian activists and followers of the nationalist VMRO party "blocked" Sunday one of the country's border checkpoints with Turkey as a sign of protest against the increasing Syrian refugee influx.
The nationalists have "blockaded" the Kapitan Andreevo border checkpoint with Turkey.
The Deputy Chairman of VMRO Angel Dzambazki is quoted as saying Turkey was deliberately transferring illegal immigrants to Bulgaria. He has stressed that 90 illegal immigrants cross the border daily, while security is provided by only 45 border police officers.
According to VMRO, people crossing the border are not Syrian asylum seekers, but criminals that would cause a new crime wave.
"Maritsa" highway is now blocked and a line of tractor trailers has begun to form. When asked how long this will last, the nationalists have replied: "Until the police arrive."

Default Preparing our Afghan "refugee wave"

October 23, 2013, Wednesday | Posted by Magdalena Tasheva

20,000 Taliban waiting in Istanbul command to storm the Bulgarian border as seekers. "

Two committees discussed in closed session topic for Refugees - Internal Security and Public Order and Foreign Policy. Lawmakers on the situation of refugee flows reported our first diplomat Vigenin and Deputy Interior Minister Vasil Marinov.

"At present there are 7356 refugees. To this number must be added that nearly 500 persons in custody for 24 hours to the border police. " That said Deputy Interior Minister Vasil Marinov. So nearly 8,000 foreigners seeking protection of our territory.

The meeting of the two committees, it became clear something else - that the next wave of refugees that can flood is Afghanistan. About 20,000 Afghan refugees 'waiting' in Istanbul to go to the West.

Every day there are refugees trying to escape to the west of Bulgaria, it was clear from the words of Marinov. This morning were arrested 9 people on the Bulgarian-Serbian border, he said.

12 are those who came to our territory, are found to be a threat to our national security.
One of them is found to be involved in combat, whose side however Marinov refused to clarify. There are people crossing the border with Turkey, which are purely criminal behavior, but they are not Syrian citizens.

It became clear that he would expel those who are not eligible to receive refugee protection. MIA no data on persons related to terrorist organizations that have crossed our border.

Foreign Minister Vigenin, in turn, said that the country will put the question for Turkey to strengthen controls at the border. The question is why now, after 10 months of strong increases imigranstkoto invasion and 3 months after "wave Syrian" government "Oresharsky" did not do it and did not ask help from FRONNTEKS and EASO. Vigenin said that Bulgaria would still try to activate a provision in an agreement with Turkey since 1967, which has established a joint commission on border issues.

A total of 112 respected Bulgarian intellectuals have written a letter to Chief Prosecutor Sotir Tsatsarov, alerting him about the newly formed neo-Nazi party in the country.

Bulgarian extremists established Saturday a new party with the name "Nationalist Party of Bulgaria." It includes the formations National Resistance, the Bulgarian National-Radical Party, the local branch of neo-Nazi organization "Blood and Honor," and a number of informal groups.

In their letter to Tsatsarov, the intellectuals have pointed out that the new party has described its most important task as “cleansing Bulgaria from the foreign and alien immigrant scum that has been flooding the towns of Bulgaria.”

Noting that the new party is unconstitutional, the authors of the letter have urged Tsatsarov to do anything possible to stop its registration in court.

Bulgaria has seen a surge of xenophobic sentiments over the past few months, with ultranationalist groups frequently assaulting refugees, immigrants and people from the ethnic minorities on the streets of the capital Sofia.

I will later post the names of those 112 intellectuals, about 1/2 of the names end "Berg" aka Jewish.
But they are right, they have right to fear, because their time will come.

Bulgarian police detain 120 after mosque attack

SOFIA (Reuters) - Bulgarian police detained more than 120 people on Friday after hundreds of nationalists and soccer fans attacked a mosque in the country's second city Plovdiv, smashing its windows with stones.

Over 2,000 people had gathered outside a Plovdiv court as it heard an appeal case dealing with the return of an ancient mosque in the central city of Karlovo, taken over by the state more than 100 years ago, to Bulgaria's Chief Mufti, the Muslim religious authority.

The rally then marched through the city and some protesters, chanting racist slogans, approached a Plovdiv mosque cordoned off by police, police said in a statement.

"Firecrackers, torches and stones were thrown at the mosque. One policeman was injured. Some 120 people were detained," it said.

Sofia prosecutors said they had charged eight people with hooliganism, crimes against religion and xenophobia.

TV footage of national BNT television showed several protesters who appeared to have suffered head injuries in clashes with police.

The Chief Mufti condemned the attack on the mosque and said the attempt to pressure the court put democracy at risk in the European Union country.

Muslims make up about 13 percent of Bulgaria's 7.3 million people.

The Chief Mufti has launched some 26 court cases to try to restore Muslim ownership of 29 mosques and other property across the Balkan state, prompting some public opposition in the predominantly Orthodox Christian population.
