Default Kostas Plevris (Greece)

Rights activist harassed, threatened with death, after testifying in trial of Holocaust denier

(GHM/IFEX) - A prominent anti-racism activist who gave evidence in the trial of a Greek author who denies the Holocaust, has found himself the target of a hate campaign involving death threats being waged on the Internet.

Panayote Dimitras, of the human rights organisation GHM, testified in the December 2007 trial as a prosecution witness in the trial of author Kostas Plevris.

Plevris, a lawyer and author of the book "Jews: The Whole Truth", which denies the Holocaust, was convicted of inciting racial hatred and given a 14-month suspended sentence.

Following Dimitras' testimony, a journalist from the Greek state TV Channel NET called him "scum" and attempted to assault him. The video clip of the incident was later posted on the video-sharing site, YouTube, by an extreme right-wing youth group.

Below the video, insults and death threats were posted, as well as anti-Semitic messages, such as "Death to the Jewish bastards" and "No Jew should remain in our country".

Following the trial verdict, messages containing death threats against Dimitras have been posted on other Internet sites.

"The aim of attacks and threats against human rights defenders is to dissuade us from working to end discrimination in Greece. These crimes must not go unpunished," said Dimitras.

Dimitras was not the only target of threats and harassment. In the run-up to the trial, Jewish activists who testified against Plevris, as well as other GHM staff, were also subject to insulting, threatening and racist statements in extreme-right wing newspapers, and on at least one TV channel.

As Europe prepares to commemorate International Holocaust Remembrance Day on 27 January 2008, Minority Rights Group International (MRG) and GHM urge the Greek authorities to take a stronger stand against anti-Semitic and racist behaviour.

Although the 2007 trial was the first of its kind in Greece, under legislation passed in 1979, Plevris was given a relatively light suspended sentence. And his co-defendants from the extreme right-wing paper, "Eleftheros Kosmos", were acquitted.

In 2003, the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance expressed concern that the Greek judicial authorities appeared unwilling to take on cases involving racism. MRG and GHM note that, despite the attempted assault on Dimitras taking place while the court was in session and in front of the bench, the presiding judge took no action.

MRG's legal case officer Cynthia Morel says: "It is extremely worrying that Mr. Dimitras should be the target of a hate campaign, simply for highlighting the poison of racist and anti-Semitic behaviour."

In a further extraordinary development, Plevris has launched a series of legal actions against representatives of GHM and the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece (KIS), claiming he was defamed by their complaints, and seeking compensation.

But Morel says, "International human rights law clearly lays down that remarks which incite racial hatred are not protected under freedom of expression."

Since the Second World War, the Greek government has not officially recognised non-Greek minorities, apart from Muslims, within its borders. An estimated 60,000 Greek Jews were killed during the Holocaust. The Jewish community in Greece is believed to number approximately 5,000.

MRG is a non-governmental organisation working to secure the rights of ethnic, religious and linguistic minorities and indigenous peoples worldwide. GMH monitors, publishes, lobbies, and litigates on human and minority rights and anti-discrimination issues in Greece.

Default Greek nationalist gets 14 months for book questioning the "Holocaust"

THENS (EJP)---A militant Greek neo-Nazi was sentenced to a 14-month suspended sentence on Thursday for inciting to hatred with his book denying the Holocaust.

After four days of trial, Costas Plevris, a lawyer, writer and presenter of a marginal TV station, was found guilty of inciting to hatred with his 1,400 page book titled “Jews: the Whole Truth” denying the Holocaust and containing offensive references to Jews.

In his book, the author writes: “To begin with, I declare that I am a Nazi, a fascist, a racist, an anti-democrat, an anti-Semite. Jews are mortal enemies and deserve the firing squad."

It was Greece’s first such trial under a anti-discrimination law passed in 1979.

Once Plevris’ book was published in May 2006, the Greek Helsinki Monitor, an NGO that monitors human rights in Greece, immediately filled a complaint against him under the law.

Leaders of the umbrella group Central Board of Jewish communities in Greece (CJBG) testified at the court that the book has led to a spike in attacks on Jewish monuments in the country.

"After the book was published, attacks against Jewish sites increased," said Moses Costantinis, head of the Board, said.

On trial together with Plevris, the publisher, the editor and a journalist of the extreme-right weekly newspaper “Elefteros Kosmos” were found not guilty.

Benjamin Albalas, head of the Jewish Community of Athens, said before the court that the book "incites violence and encourages people to kill us."

Defence lawyers said their clients were being persecuted for freely expressing their views.

The Jewish community saw the trial as a key test of the Greek authorities’ determination to deal with anti-Semitism and Holocaust denial.

Thumbs up Kostas Plevris is acquitted

ATHENS (EJP)---The Greek Jewish community said Friday it was “shocked” after neo-Nazi militant Kostas Plevris, who wrote a book denying the Holocaust and containing offensive references to Jews, was acquitted by an Appeals court in Athens.

Plevris was found not guilty of “incitement to racial hatred and violence against the Jews” by the 5-member court.

In a reaction, the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece (KIS) expressed its “disappointment and amazement at the decision of the Athens court.

"This decision saddens and causes concern among citizens of a modern democratic society as a self-confessed advocate of Nazism and racism remains unpunished though he not only distorts proven historical evidence, but even worse, uses his pen to incite hatred and provoke discrimination and violence against citizens of Greece and Europe," the Central Board said.

“The Greek Jewry believes that the fundamental constitutional right of freedom of speech has nothing to do with the direct threats, insults and incitement to racial hatred and violence against the Jews that Plevris includes in his book" titled “Jews-The whole truth” .

Plevris had been convicted in first instance in December 2007 and condemned to 14 months of imprisonment on probation for three years for “racial insult”, “incitement to hatred and racial violence” on the basis of the 1979 anti-racist law.

At the time, the Jewish community saw the trial as a key test of the Greek authorities’ determination to deal with anti-Semitism and Holocaust denial in a country where anti-Semitic literature such as the infamous “Protocols of the elders of Zion” is on sale in bookshops.

The charges against Plevris were also brought by the Helsinki Monitor and the “Anti-Nazi Initiative” organization, two human right Greek NGO’s.

He immediately appealed the sentence.

According to Moses Constantinis, the Appeals court prosecutor characterized Plevris’s defamatory book – which denies the Holocaust, calls the Jews “sub-human” and threatens them with the “re-opening of the crematoria in Auschwitz- a “scientific work”.

To express the resentment of the Greek Jews, the Jewish umbrella body has decided not to be represented at the European symposium “Building together the Future of Europe” which will be held next Monday in Brussels, “given that theoretical analysis and statements made by Greek MEPs on the denunciation and condemnation of anti-Semitism are meaningless”.

Around 6,000 Jews live in Greece.

Great news! I get the impression that the average Greek is in tune with his culture/history/traditions/people and views the jew with extreme suspicion if not outright hostility.

And what's with this shit:

Quote:
An estimated 60,000 Greek Jews were killed during the Holocaust. The Jewish community in Greece is believed to number approximately 5,000.
We're supposed to believe that 5,000 jews live in Greece today, but back in WW2, 12 times that many Greek kikes were killed?!

Jews are such sloppy liars. Revilo Oliver theorized that in their fanatical arrogance and hatred of the goyim, they concoct lies without thinking even thinking about how believable they are.
