Default Constructive Pessimism

Constructive pessimism is a moderate form of Murphy's Law applied to political activism.

If something can easily go wrong it probably will go wrong, and your enemies will make sure it goes wrong at the worst possible moment.

Some examples recent enough to be realistic, without naming names.

If you go out of your way to be offensive to everyone around you and become a media sensation you will lose your job.

The constructive pessimist will be prepared by having enough savings to live for at least a year without income, or a backup source of income from a small business that's hard to boycott.

If there's an obvious way to stop you by passing a law that is uncontroversial, zoning or building codes for example, then that law will be passed and used against you as quickly as possible.

The constructive pessimist will be prepared by conforming to all common sense local standards and practices.

If you are politically controversial and you flirt with legal gray areas the police, prosecutors, courts and probably the jury will interpret your actions in a way that maximizes your punishment.

The constructive pessimist will be prepared by having good judgment, stopping just short of the gray area. This isn't easy for borderline personality types who tend to overstep bounds.

Not naming any names, of course.
