Default Armen Avetisyan (Armenia)

Armenian neo-Nazi leader charged with inciting ethnic hatred

YEREVAN Jan 26

The controversial leader of Armenia's neo-Nazi Armyano-Aryan Order
was arrested late Tuesday for inciting ethnic hatred with his
frequent anti-Semitic statements, the prosecutor general's office
said.

Armen Avetisyan may face up to six years in jail for inciting
inter-ethnic and inter-religious hatred, propagating superiority of
one race over another and insulting the Armenian nation's dignity
,
officials said.

Avetisyan, who during his latest news conference called Armenia's
authorities "yid and Mason agents that must be swept off the face of
the earth", said "his trial will turn into a Nuremberg trial of the
Jews," a local newspaper reported.

Avetisyan has also drawn up lists of those high-ranking officials he
says are homosexuals, demanding that they be fired and threatening to
publish the lists if they are not.

The U.S. consulate in Yerevan has refused to grant a visa to an Armenian ultranationalist politician who spent two months in prison last year for making anti-Semitic statements, it emerged on Thursday.

Armen Avetisian, the leader of a small party called the Armenian Aryan Union (HAM), cited a consulate official as telling him on Tuesday that he can not visit the United States because “we don’t want you to say things in the USA which you say in your country

A Holocaust memorial in a public park in the center of Yerevan also came under attack in September, when vandals desecrated the memorial on the final day of Jewish New Year celebrations.

Armenia's Jewish community is estimated to number less than 1,000 people. It is largely formed of scientists and other professionals who moved to Armenia in the 1960s and '70s to escape persecution in Russia and Ukraine. Most integrated quickly into society, marrying ethnic Armenians and adopting Armenian surnames.

“ Karapetian's rhetoric appeared to embolden Armen Avetisian, the openly anti-Semitic leader of the Armenian Aryan Union, a small ultra nationalist party. Avetisian in a recent newspaper interview alleged that there are as many as 50,000 "disguised" Jews in Armenia, and promised he would work to have them expelled from the country. He was arrested on 24 January on charges of inciting ethnic hatred
