Default These New Maps of Pluto and Its Moon Charon Are the Most Detailed Yet

These New Maps of Pluto and Its Moon Charon Are the Most Detailed Yet

By meticulously stitching together photos taken from two cameras aboard the New Horizons spacecraft, a team of scientists has compiled the most accurate maps of Pluto and Charon to date.

We’ve seen photos and maps of Pluto and Charon before, but these maps now represent our best current understanding of the surface features and topology of these distant Kuiper Belt objects.

New Horizons increased our knowledge of what Pluto looks like from a fuzzy telescope picture to detailed surface photos. As dramatic as when Mariner IV took the first close-up pictures of Mars on July 14, 1965--exactly 50 years earlier to the day when NH flew by Pluto.

NH only managed to get about 50 percent of Pluto's and Charon's surface since it was a fast flyby probe and not an orbiter. Doubtful there will be another mission to Pluto anytime soon, at least not in my lifetime, unfortunately. However, on January 1, 2019 NH will fly past another Kuiper Belt object, 2014 MU69 Ultima Thule, so we will get some more pictures of our solar system's boondocks.
