Archbishop of Canterbury arrives in Zimbabwe

THE Archbishop of Canterbury and central figure in the Anglican communion Dr Rowan Williams arrived in Harare yesterday and led the celebration of a mass at the City Sports Centre where he said Europe should bear its colonial debt to Africa after the West assumed dominance over blacks through imperialism.

Dr Williams, who travelled with police escort, delivered his sermon to thousands of parishioners from the Anglican Church of the Province of Central Africa’s Harare diocese.

He arrived just after 11am at the church’s Avondale offices after travelling by road from Malawi.

Bishops who attended the mass include Archbishop of Central Africa Albert Chama, Bishop of Harare Chad Gandiya within that province, retired Bishop of Harare Jonathan Siyachitema, retired Bishop Sebastian Bakare and Manicaland Bishop Julias Makoni.

Prominent members of society who are members of the Anglican Communion and attended the mass include Constitutional and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Eric Matinenga, Clerk of Parliament Austin Zvoma and Zanu-PF Politburo member Victoria Chitepo.

Delivering his sermon at the City Sports Centre, Dr Williams made a veiled attack at the Church of the Province of Zimbabwe.

“We know very well that you had doors locked in your faces by those who claim the name of Christians and Anglicans. You know, by their greed and violence, they have refused the grace of God and tried to silence your worship and frustrate your witnesses in church, schools and hospitals,” he said.

“But you know that the will of God to invite people to his feast is so strong that it can triumph over those mindless and Godless assaults.”

“For a long period in this country, an anxious ruling class clung on to the power they had seized at the expense of the indigenous people and ignored their rights and their hopes for dignity and political freedom…

“How tragic that this should be replaced by another kind of lawlessness, where so many live in daily fear of attack if they fail to comply with what the powerful require of them,” Williams told the crowd.

“The message we want to send from this Eucharist celebration is that we do not have to live like that, in terror, in bloodshed.”

He also said colonialism was wrong as it was characterised by oppression.

“As whites we are indebted to Africa because of greed, colonialism and imperialism,” he said.

This sad spectacle is just one more reason to dislike Judeo-Christianity!

Who wants to go around in sack-cloth and ashes all day apologizing for supposed 'sins' that happened before one was even freaking born??
