MF Global Holdings said to be subject of FBI investigation

MF Global Holdings Ltd., which filed for bankruptcy protection almost a week ago, is the subject of a formal FBI investigation opened late in the past week, a person familiar with the matter said.

The inquiry, in which Federal Bureau of Investigation agents are working with U.S. prosecutors, is in its preliminary stage, and no information requests have been issued as of Nov. 4 in the afternoon, said the person, who declined to be identified because the matter isn’t public. The decision to begin the probe was made late Nov. 3 or Nov. 4, the person said, adding that reports of an earlier investigation were incorrect.

MF Global, which was run by Jon Corzine, a former New Jersey governor, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy after a $6.3 billion bet on the bonds of some of Europe’s most indebted nations prompted regulator concerns and a credit rating downgrade. Corzine, who once served as a Goldman Sachs Group Inc. co-chief executive, quit MF Global Nov. 4 and has retained a defense lawyer, according to another person familiar with the matter.

Brokerage Unit

Officers and directors of MF Global’s brokerage unit MF Global Inc. are to be subpoenaed by a liquidator in a separate probe of possible misconduct related to customer accounts. U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Martin Glenn said at a Nov. 4 hearing in New York that brokerage trustee James W. Giddens can share documents and depositions with the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.

The trustee must probe management’s possible involvement without interference from the parent company, Glenn said.

“There have already been serious allegations of misconduct,” Glenn said, citing company lawyers who told the SEC on Oct. 31, when the company filed for bankruptcy, that there was a significant shortfall in its collateral for segregated accounts.

J. Peter Donald, a spokesman for the FBI in New York, and Ellen Davis, a spokeswoman for Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara, declined to comment. The person familiar with the FBI’s MF Global probe didn’t specify its scope or focus.

Corzine is one of the Big Boys. He will escape with his loot intact.

The most interesting thing about MF Global is that much of the billions that are missing belongs to smaller jewfish, who run small hedge funds and managed commodity businesses. These "Middle-sized jews," who run from $20 million to a couple hundred million, almost all of it put up by even smaller jews, are left as at least partial "Bag holders."

If the Jew running a fund did not title an account in the name of each of his individual "Investors," Then SIPC will treat the entire group as one in covering the losses. The maximum for cash was $100K until the big meltdown in '08, when it was raised to $250K. That is far short of what it would take to extricate all those little and middle-sized jews from this debacle.

Interesting times, indeed!

Please cite your best sources regarding this info. Corzine is certainly at least shabbos kikealike. Are you confusing him with NJ's Lautenberg, who is a gawdz pet?

Around Jon Corzine's Roots, a Casual Indifference to Ethnicity

By IVER PETERSON
Published: April 09, 2000

The name is Dutch. Probably.

When Jon S. Corzine, the former Goldman Sachs chairman turned New Jersey Democratic Senate candidate, waded into the thicket of ethnic politics recently, he made it quite clear that he regretted his ill-considered humor about Italian-Americans.

But despite his repeated expressions of regret, one thing remained thoroughly unclear -- his own ethnic background, an issue that he treated with a mixture of ignorance and indifference. Asked about his background, in a state where such things tend not to be treated casually, he said he was told his mother's lineage was English and his father's side was either French or Italian.

If he hasn't seemed all that interested in his own ethnic identity, conversations with the people he grew up with here in the prairie lands of southern Illinois offered a glimpse why.

There are certainly identifiable ethnic groups in Christian County, including the Italians who came here to mine coal before the mines petered out after World War II, about when Mr. Corzine was born in 1948. It's just that Italian-Americans and other groups, including a dwindling number of Jews, don't stand out as much as they once might have, said Jack Mazzotti, owner of Rene's drug store on the courthouse square.

''The older group cared about that kind of thing, but they're dying out,'' said Mr. Mazzotti, who remembers Mr. Corzine with fondness and admiration from their days at Taylorville High School. ''We're all pretty much all-American Americans now -- we don't have that class and ethnic background thing that you see in the cities.'' (Or in New Jersey, where one voter in four is of Italian descent.)

Christian County's homogeneity might explain why Mr. Corzine would be loose-tongued about ethnic jokes, Mr. Mazzotti went on, although he winced when he heard of his old friend's recent gaffes about Italian contractors making ''cement shoes'' and Jewish lawyers getting them out of jail.

Mr. Corzine grew up on a farm across the railroad tracks from the highway at Willey's Station, a few miles up the road from Taylorville toward Decatur. His father, Roy Allen Corzine, farmed the fields around the house and sold insurance, while his mother, Nancy, taught first and second grades at Memorial Elementary School in Taylorville. As a Senate candidate, Mr. Corzine has liked to emphasize his humble origins, partly as an antidote to Mr. Florio's charge that he was trying to buy the Senate seat with an immense television campaign.

Yet Mr. Corzine's grandfather, also Roy, was a prosperous farmer who was a Republican state assemblyman for four years and was chairman of the Agriculture Committee. Still, Mr. Corzine was not pampered as a youth, said Carolyn Dorris, the sole surviving aunt of Joanne Corzine, Mr. Corzine's wife, who also grew up here and who has known Mr. Corzine since kindergarten.

''That Florio said he never had to work hard, but he certainly did,'' Mrs. Dorris said in an interview at the big ranch house in Taylorville's comfortable northeast section, which the Corzines bought for her and for Mrs. Corzine's mother before she died. ''But he worked the farm and when he went to the U. of I. he got a union card and worked as a hod carrier. He carried cement -- you think that isn't hard?''

Mrs. Dorris was as unaware and as uninterested in the question of Mr. Corzine's family background as he is. ''That kind of thing just doesn't come up very much around here,'' she said, and apparently the Corzines are not alone. David Herbert Donald opens his 1995 biography of Abraham Lincoln, who settled less than 30 miles from here in Sangamon County, with the words, ''Abraham Lincoln was not interested in his ancestry.'' Lincoln told a would-be biographer that it was ''a folly'' to inquire into his roots.

Yet the 1893 edition of ''Portrait and Biographical Record of Christian County, Illinois,'' offers a fragmentary look at a Corzine family, like Lincoln's and the other pioneer families around here, slowly making its way west out of New York and Pennsylvania with the retreating frontier. Jacob Schaffer Corzine, who moved to Christian County from Ohio in 1861, had a father named Allen -- Mr. Corzine's father's middle name -- born in Pennsylvania in 1816, according to the Record. And Jacob's great-grandfather was John Corzine Sr., the book reports, ''who came to America from Holland and settled in Manhattan Island, where he owned 60 acres of land on which Wall Street now stands.''

''Of course,'' said the librarian at the Decatur County Genealogical Society, ''you can only go by what they told somebody back then.''

Indeed, there were already plenty of Corzines in Illinois before Jacob Schaffer Corzine. Twenty-one Corzines fought in the Civil War in Illinois regiments, none of them from Christian County. Today, Jon Corzine's nearest local relatives live around the prairie village of Assumption, 15 miles east of Taylorville.

Like Jon Corzine, the Assumption Corzines are all tall, Methodist and nearsighted -- but Republican -- and they took an interest in their distant cousin when he began to get his name in the papers as a New York bond trader. But Jon Corzine apparently had no more interest in pursuing the matter of his past with long-lost relatives than he had with New Jersey political reporters.

''My dad wrote him once after someone sent us an article about him in The Wall Street Journal,'' said Bob Corzine, a retired Assumption farmer. ''It seems like it was six months before he wrote back, and he said he had no knowledge of us here.'' Bob Corzine let that sink in for a moment and added, ''He said he had no interest in genealogy.''

Mrs. Dorris was inclined to disbelieve any ties with the Assumption Corzines, even though they lived less than a half-hour's drive away.

''If they're related, it's like their yeller dog ran through our yard once some ways back,'' Mrs. Dorris said, suggesting that any connection was brief and distant. ''That's about as close as you can get to not being related.''

Jack Mazzotti, the owner of Rene's drug store, had a more charitable interpretation, saying that rich and successful people could be hard to approach.

''His friends step back because they don't know whether to call him or not,'' Mr. Mazzotti said. ''He's in a different stratosphere now, and how do you approach him without setting off signals that you want something?''

''The kids,'' as Mrs. Dorris called Jon and Joanne Corzine, have hardly ignored their old town. They built a park in honor of Mrs. Dorris's late husband, Keith, behind the First United Methodist Church here, and Tom Campbell, the principal of Taylorville High School, pointed out that they had endowed two scholarships for graduates of their alma mater. One, for $1,500 a year for four years, is paid through the Bertram Hopper Memorial Foundation, the same foundation, created by founders of the Georgia-Pacific Company, that gave Jon a scholarship to the University of Illinois. The second, in Jon Corzine's father's name, is for $500, and goes to a Methodist student.

Mr. Corzine has also been generous with his money to schools in the East, and Mrs. Dorris said he had a strong instinct to do the right thing. Since her late husband had served four terms as Taylorville city clerk before he quit in disgust at all the politicking, Mrs. Dorris tried to warn her favorite nephew about what he was getting into.

''When he said he wanted to run I said, 'Jon, politics is a dirty game.' And he said, 'I know, but we have to get some good guys in or we'll only have scum.' ''

He may have decided to mimic jews' appearance to better succeed in the banking world. He may also be a guy like Abraham Lincoln who just sort of looks like a jew.

Police in Oakland, California have cleared out a weeks-old encampment after issuing several warnings to Occupy demonstrators.

Oakland police and officers from several other San Francisco Bay area cities encircled the downtown encampment before dawn and moved in at about 6 a.m. Officers were seen escorting handcuffed protesters away from the camp soon afterward.

The action comes a day after police drove hundreds of anti-Wall Street demonstrators from encampments in Portland, Oregon, arresting more than 50 people. Oakland officials insisted on an end to their city's encampment after a man was shot and killed Thursday near the camp.

General Assembly holds mock trial and journalist Chris Hedges reads indictment accusing Goldman Sachs of financial crimes against humanity.

Police have begun clearing out 'Occupy' protester camps in New York. There are also claims that pepper spray is being used. The raid comes after activists vowed heightened action this coming Thursday, to mark two months since the movement began.

Funny, I don't remember that academic fraud Cornel West ever criticizing Obongo when he appointed Goldman Sachs/Mossad agent Rahm Emanuel as his chief of staff yet now he is at the forefront of the OWS crowd.

Four hundred arrests -- that is the tally for the last 24 hours, as police stage an intense crackdown on massive Occupy Wall Street protests erupting in America, with more than 30,000 protesters having shown up in New York City alone.

Oakland police arrest about 300 Occupy protesters

About 300 people were arrested Saturday during a chaotic day of Occupy protests that saw demonstrators break into City Hall and burn an American flag, as police earlier fired tear gas and bean bags to disperse hundreds of people after some threw rocks and bottles and tore down fencing outside a nearby convention center.

Oakland police deploy smoke and tear gas to stop protesters with the Occupy Oakland camp as they march through downtown Oakland, Calif., on Saturday.

Dozens of police officers remained on guard outside City Hall around midnight following the most turbulent day of protests since November, when Oakland police forcefully dismantled an Occupy encampment. An exasperated Mayor Jean Quan, who faced heavy criticism for the police action last fall, called on the Occupy movement to "stop using Oakland as its playground."

"People in the community and people in the Occupy movement have to stop making excuses for this behavior," Quan said.
