A controversial Finnish civil initiative to join NATO has received over 50,000 votes online as of Saturday, meaning by law it must be voted upon by Parliament. Finland has never before sought membership in the transatlantic alliance, but the ongoing hostilities in Ukraine have prompted some Finns to doubt their nation’s independence is safe without reinforcements from the West.

Given that Finland joining NATO would place the alliance directly on Russia’s border, Moscow has warned against the move. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova informed both Finland and Sweden on Friday that there would be “serious military and political consequences” requiring “retaliatory steps” by the Russian Federation if they joined NATO.

WASHINGTON/HELSINKI, March 4 (Reuters) - U.S. President Joe Biden agreed to deepen security ties with his Finnish counterpart Sauli Niinisto on Friday, but stopped short of making any formal guarantees to the country nervously watching Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Both men also stopped short of saying Finland would seek to join NATO or become a major non-NATO ally of the United States, a designation granting enhanced security cooperation.

Yet during an hour-and-a-half long White House meeting, Biden called Finland a "strong defense partner" helping a "united trans-Atlantic response to holding Russia accountable."

Finland’s NATO folly

For the last 30 years I have seen the evolution of Finland into a country with unparalleled levels of prosperity and peace. It has been at the top of many global rankings from education to happiness. But I must have been living in some parallel universe. Amnesia now prevails in Finland and people forget everything that has been achieved and ignore the reasons behind the so-called Finnish success story.

Now I am surrounded by so-called experts wheeled into TV studios war-mongering about the events in Ukraine and how Finland is next in line. I see fear overshadowing policy decisions and the Twitterati stoking the fires calling for intervention and no fly zones. There seems to have been a collective collapse of sanity.

Is this because too many reside in their social media echo chambers where only those who agree are given access? Where history has been cancelled to meet identity restitution and the symbols of history are stigmatised? Or where the PlayStation indoctrination to violence has created generations oblivious to the sacrifices of those gone before? Perhaps they believe that with the click of a button everything changes and there are no repercussions?

People seem to forget that since 1944 Finland has extricated itself from an alliance with Nazi Germany and dealt masterfully with the Eastern neighbour. That Stalin, Khrushchev, Kosygin et al. provided an existential threat far greater than Putin. Have people forgotten Hungary 1956 or the Prague Spring in 1968 or the threat that cold war nuclear war presided uneasily in the shadows and was nearly unleashed during Khrushchev’s intrigues in Cuba?

Yet Finland has adroitly navigated these turbulent waters for the last 70+ years. Why are people now immersed in historical amnesia and oblivious to the key causal drivers behind this journey?

Finland is just days away from applying for NATO membership

HELSINKI, Finland — After completing a few more steps, Finland will be ready to send its application to join the NATO military alliance, the country’s foreign affairs minister told CNBC Tuesday.

The Nordic nation has been considering joining the alliance in the wake of Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine. Finland’s Prime Minister Sanna Marin has previously said the invasion “changed the security policy situation in such a way that there is no going back to the way things were.”

Joining NATO would mark a sharp U-turn in Finland’s decades-long policy of neutrality but could lead to a backlash from Russia, where President Vladimir Putin has been vocal about his opposition to NATO enlargement.

Finland joining NATO is ‘natural step’ – EU official


Helsinki has not been neutral for a long time, EU Commissioner for International Partnerships Jutta Urpilainen has admitted



Finland was always going to join NATO eventually, since it has become closely intertwined with the West over the years, EU Commissioner for International Partnerships Jutta Urpilainen – who hails from the country – told Germany’s RND media group on Monday.

The Nordic nation had maintained a neutral status since the end of WWII. However, it officially submitted a bid to join the US-led military bloc on May 18.

Urpilainen, who headed Finland’s Finance Ministry between 2011 and 2014, believes her country’s neutrality was gradually eroded during the intervening period.

Finland seizes hundreds of Russian freight cars as EU sanctions bite

MOSCOW, July 5 (Reuters) - Finland has seized nearly a thousand freight cars belonging to Russian companies as a result of European Union sanctions, according to Finnish state-owned rail operator VR and a letter from Russia's rail monopoly seen by Reuters.

As Finland's VR moved to reduce railway traffic with Russia after the EU sanctioned Russian coal supplies in April, 865 rail cars from Russia were seized by bailiffs, according to the June 6 dated letter from Russian Railways to the Ministry of Transport.

Finland and Sweden on Tuesday moved a step closer to becoming full members of NATO with the formal signing of their accession agreement with the military alliance.

Their upcoming NATO memberships have been closely followed as it marks a major shift in not only their security policies, but the overall defense architecture in Europe. Both countries had adopted a neutral stance toward Russia for most of their recent history, but the unprovoked invasion of Ukraine propeled them to take a new direction.

“Finland and Sweden will make strong and important contributions to our Alliance. Our forces are interoperable. They have trained, exercised, and served together for many years,” Jens Stoltenberg, NATO’s secretary general said Tuesday following the signatures.

Erdogan says Turkey will freeze Finland, Sweden's NATO bids if promises not kept

ANKARA, July 18 (Reuters) - Turkey will freeze Finland and Sweden's NATO membership bids if the Nordic countries do not keep promises on counter-terrorism made last month, President Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday, adding he believed Sweden was "not showing a good image" for now.

Finland and Sweden applied for membership of the defence alliance in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, but were met with opposition from Turkey, which accused the Nordic countries of supporting groups it deems terrorists.

Finland can’t stop Russians from getting visas – media


The EU member can decide who visas are issued to, but a complete ban is reportedly not possible

Finland can stop issuing visas to some Russians, as is the case with other EU states, but a complete ban is impossible, Russian news agency Interfax reported on Friday, citing a source in the European Commission.

“EU countries have significant leeway in terms of cutting back on or halting the [issuance] of long-term visas and residence permits pursuant to their national legislation,” the source said, adding, however, that there “will always be categories of people to whom visas must be issued, for example, for humanitarian purposes, for family members, journalists or dissidents.”

Earlier, four parliamentary groups in Finland supported the suspension of issuing visas to Russian nationals over the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Representatives from the National Coalition, Social Democrats, and Finns Party have also called for making the criteria for granting visas to Russians stricter.

US President Joe Biden has approved Finland and Sweden’s applications to join NATO, saying the alliance’s potential new members will make it as strong as it’s ever been, while vowing to challenge Russia and “autocrats” who threaten the “rules based order.”

Speaking moments before signing the US instrument of ratification for the Nordic states’ NATO membership on Tuesday, Biden hailed the US-led military collective, claiming it had kept Americans safe and served as “the basis of our security around the world.”

“Our alliance is closer than ever. It is more united than ever. And when Finland and Sweden bring the number of allies to 32, we’ll be stronger than ever,” the president said, adding that the two countries “have strong democratic institutions, strong militaries and strong and transparent economies” and will “meet every NATO requirement.”

Finland announces visa crackdown on Russians


Helsinki will restrict the number of visas given to Russians and is calling for an EU-wide ban

Finland’s Foreign Ministry announced on Tuesday that it will cut the number of entry visas available to Russians in half, with just 100 tourist permits issued per day. Along with nearby Estonia, Finland has called on the EU to impose a wholesale ban on entry from Russia.

Starting September 1, just 500 Finnish visa applications made inside Russia will be processed every day, with 100 allocated to tourists and the remaining 400 for other applicants, including workers, students, and those with family in Finland. Currently, around 1,000 applications from Russia are processed every day.

The ministry said that these quotas may be changed at a later date, and added that Finland “supports the complete suspension of the visa facilitation agreement between the EU and Russia,” a move that would more than double application fees for Russians.

The Finnish Prime Minister, Sanna Marin, is facing a backlash after being seen partying in a leaked video.

In the footage, thought to be taken from social media, she and friends including Finnish celebrities are seen dancing and singing.

She has faced criticism from opposition parties, with one leader demanding she take a drug test.

Ms Marin, 36, denied taking drugs, saying she only drank alcohol and just partied "in a boisterous way".

Formerly the world's youngest head of government - a title now held by Chilean President Gabriel Boric - Ms Marin makes no secret of partying, and has often been photographed at music festivals.

Last year she apologised for going clubbing after coming into close contact with a Covid-19 case.

Just last week, Ms Marin was dubbed the "coolest prime minister in the world" by German news outlet Bild.

Finland to bar entry to all Russian tourists


Helsinki vows to stop being a “transit country” for Russians with visas issued by other EU members

Finland is “working” on new regulations that would further toughen the restrictions introduced against Russian tourists, Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto told journalists on Wednesday, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.

“Finland does not want to be a transit country, not even for [holders of] Schengen visas issued by other nations,” Haavisto said, adding that Helsinki seeks to bring the Russian tourist traffic “under control.”

The Finnish foreign ministry is currently working with a group of experts on a “solution” that would help Finland “limit this traffic or completely stop it,” the foreign minister said, adding that the measures might involve some new laws or amendments to existing ones. In any case, the national parliament “will quickly deal with it,” Haavisto said, without naming any specific dates for the potential changes.

Haavisto details Finland’s plan to restrict entry of Russians

MINISTER for Foreign Affairs Pekka Haavisto (Greens) on Friday announced a plan to restrict the entry of Russian citizens to Finland, report YLE and Helsingin Sanomat.

All Russians holding a tourist visa, he revealed, will be prohibited from entering the country and prevented from using the country as a transit country to other parts of the Schengen Area. Finland will also enable the revocation of multiple-entry visas granted to Russians.

“All border crossings made on grounds of tourism will be prevented,” he summed up while speaking to reporters via a video link from New York City, the US.

Also existing visas can be re-evaluated and invalidated once the decision has entered into effect, according to Haavisto. Finland, though, would remain open to people travelling to work, study or meet family.

Haavisto said the restrictions could come into force in the coming days, possibly this week, following a legal and technical evaluation.

“The visas could be invalidated at the border on a case-by-case basis whenever the requirements aren’t met. The acceptance of visas can be suspended or it can be restricted except for certain special groups such as people travelling to meet their relatives.”
