We are approaching the dream

It is Lake Baikal.

"Lake Baikal (Russian: о́зеро Байка́л) is a rift lake in Russia, located in southern Siberia, between Irkutsk Oblast to the northwest and the Buryat Republic to the southeast.

Lake Baikal is the largest freshwater lake by volume in the world, containing roughly 20% of the world's unfrozen surface fresh water. With a maximum depth of 1,642 m (5,387 ft), Baikal is the world's deepest lake. It is considered among the world's clearest lakes and is considered the world's oldest lake — at 25 million years. It is the seventh-largest lake in the world by surface area. With 23,615.39 km3 (5,700 cu mi) of fresh water, it contains more water than all the North American Great Lakes combined.

Like Lake Tanganyika, Lake Baikal was formed as an ancient rift valley, having the typical long crescent shape with a surface area of 31,722 km2 (12,248 sq mi). Baikal is home to thousands of species of plants and animals, many of which exist nowhere else in the world. The lake was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. It is also home to Buryat tribes who reside on the eastern side of Lake Baikal, rearing goats, camels, cattle, and sheep, where the mean temperature varies from a winter minimum of −19 °C (−2 °F) to a summer maximum of 14 °C (57 °F)."

A conference room of the Government of the Republic of Kalmykia.

It is the city Elista.

"Elista (Russian: Элиста) is the capital city of the Republic of Kalmykia, Russia.

Elista was founded in 1865 as a small settlement; the name is from Kalmyk els(e)n "sand(y)". In November 1920, Elista became the administrative center of Kalmyk Autonomous Oblast. In October 1935, Elista was recognized as the capital of the Kalmyk ASSR.

On December 27, 1943, the Kalmyk ASSR was dissolved and its ethnic Kalmyk residents were forcibly exiled to Siberia. Russian people were brought in to repopulate Elista whose name was changed to Stepnoy (Степно́й). It was called Stepnoy until 1957, when the survivors of the deportations were allowed to return from exile."

"The Republic of Kalmykia (Russian: Респу́блика Калмы́кия) is a federal subject of Russia (a republic). As of the 2010 Census, its population was 289,481.

It is the only region in Europe where Buddhism is practiced by the majority of the population. It has become well known as an international center for chess because its former President, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, is the head of the International Chess Federation (FIDE)."

Text by Wikipedia.

"City of chess"

"Chess City (also referred to as City-Chess; Russian: Сити-Чесс Siti-Chess or Город Шахмат Gorod Shakhmat) is a large complex devoted to chess and chess competitions located east of Elista, Kalmykia, in Russia. The neighborhood-size development consists of a central, four-story domed City Chess Hall surrounded by an Olympic-style village of Californian-Mediterranean Revival Style architecture. The site has a conference center, public swimming pool and a museum of Kalmyk Buddhist art. The complex features sculptures and artwork devoted to chess, including a statue of Ostap Bender, a fictional character of popular books written by Ilya Ilf and Yevgeni Petrov, who proposed a creation of world chess capital. The complex has been used to host visiting dignitaries like the Dalai Lama.

Completed in 1998, the idea and development of Chess City is directly the result of Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, Kalmykia's millionaire President who has ruled the republic since 1993 and been president of FIDE, the international governing body of chess, since 1995. A fanatical chess enthusiast, Ilyumzhinov had the complex built in time for the 33rd Chess Olympiad.

Chess City has hosted three major FIDE tournaments: the XXXIII Chess Olympiad in 1998, the 2004 Women's World Chess Championship, and the 2006 World Chess Championship."

"In physical geography, tundra is a type of biome where the tree growth is hindered by low temperatures and short growing seasons. The term tundra comes through Russian тундра (tûndra) from the Kildin Sami word tūndâr "uplands", "treeless mountain tract". There are three types of tundra: arctic tundra, alpine tundra, and Antarctic tundra. In tundra, the vegetation is composed of dwarf shrubs, sedges and grasses, mosses, and lichens. Scattered trees grow in some tundra regions. The ecotone (or ecological boundary region) between the tundra and the forest is known as the tree line or timberline."

Photo reconstructions of Sergey Larenkov

"Link to the past

Dear friends, if you're interested in travel into the past, I will try to help you. But be warned, the history often hides a very scary pages, and return to the present is much more pleasant than to travel into the past.

Most of my work is devoted to the period of World War II. The most powerful impression on me personally produces a series of photos about the siege of Leningrad, this is my hometown. In addition, here you will find the defense of Moscow, the liberation of Prague and Vienna, the storming of Berlin, some pages from the life of Paris.

D-day collages

Some pages of my journal will bring you to the streets of the capital of the Russian Empire, St.Petersburg.

My new works:
soviet-finnish war and Vyborg
Kiev
Odessa
Sevastopol

Wherever I go, I'm trying to penetrate the layers of time. It does not always do well, but I try.

Many thanks for the support staff of the State Museum of History of St. Petersburg, as well as staff of the Russian State Documentary Film & Photo Archive, Krasnogorsk.

And of course, fond memories and endless gratitude to the photographers and war correspondents that brought us images of a bygone era.
Happy journey into the past.

Yours,
Sergey Larenkov."

Dresden 1945 / 2014

"Let's go back to 70 years ago. Tonight the city will perish.

On the night of February 13, 1945, Anglo-American bombers will make several waves of raids on the capital of Saxony. First, high-explosive bombs will be dropped. They will destroy the roofs and walls of buildings. Then the city will be bombarded with incendiary bombs, there will be a fire. The fire will envelop the whole city and grow into a fiery tornado that will turn all living things into ashes. In the afternoon, Americans will arrive to finish off rare fire and rescue teams, trying to at least someone save in the hell of Dresden.

The entire blow will take over the densely populated city center, in which there are no military facilities and defense enterprises, as well as air defense facilities. Until now, the exact number of victims is unknown, the figures are from 25,000 to 135,000 people.

And further from the city center the typical architecture of the GDR begins."

Stalingrad 1942/43 - Volgograd 2013

"So, the summer of 1942. After the disaster of the Red Army near Kharkov front line bared in the Don steppes, and overcoming the desperate resistance of the few Soviet troops, the Wehrmacht launched an offensive to the Volga and the Caucasus. August 23, the Germans went to Stalingrad, on the same day the most terrible air raid of the German bomber aviation took place, which turned the blooming city into solid ruins. Over a few hours, more than 40,000 people died."

The obelisk on the square of the Fallen fighters.

The corner of the hotel is "Bolshaya Stalingradskaya" and the building of the Universal store before the air raid.

"Both of these buildings and what remains of them will be visible in many photographs. After the war, the restored building of the Universal store, in the basement of which was the headquarters of Paulus, will be built up by the Intourist hotel, but we will return to this later."

The German gun is firing of positions located at the elevator.

"The elevator building was the highest in the city, and fierce battles unfolded for it. The Stalingrad elevator was defended by the North Sea mariners."

"According to the latest data, this photo could have been taken from another bridge, in the alignment of Krasnoznamenskaya street."

Refugees with their things on Ostrovsky Street.

"The sharp angle left by the hotel "Bolshaya Stalingradskaya" allows us to define this place with a certain precision. All modern buildings in the frame was built without binding to the foundations of old buildings, i.e. in new places."

"Now on the walls of the elevator you can easily see the traces of the war."

After the battle on the square of the Fallen fighters near the House of Pilots.

"On the site of the House of Pilots (on the left) is now the building of the Volgograd State Medical University, connected by an arch with the "Volgograd" Hotel on the right (it's also a new building). But Pushkina Street exists between them and now too."

The Germans on Kurskaya Street (Port Said Street).

"To the former school building (now the Engineering Technical Lyceum), a wing with a gym was later attached."

Soviet fighters held the house, beating off attacks of Germans within two months up to the moment of elimination of the German group. Field Marshal Paulus, at the first interrogation after the capture, admitted that when trying to seize the house, Germany lost more of its soldiers than in the conquest of whole France."

Pavlov House. View from the square "9 January" (Lenin Square).

"After the war, a colonnade was attached to the Pavlov House. In the background you can see the building of the Gergardt mill."

Yakov Pavlov (the hero of the famous defense of the Pavlov House) and A.M. Cherkasova (the brigadier of the 1st Volunteer Brigade for the Restoration of Stalingrad) talks against the backdrop of Pavlov House.

"The Pavlov House became one of the first buildings reconstructed in Stalingrad. Now this is the ordinary residential house. When I photographed this, an old woman discontentedly curtained the window with a curtain."

The inscriptions which not preserved on the wall of Pavlov House.

[I can understand the following inscriptions: Heroes of the Guard fought here to death. Let the fighting feat will... We will revive you our native Stalingrad - Alex Him]

Stalingrad 1942/43 - Volgograd 2013 (III)

The inscription which not preserved on the wall of Pavlov House.

"No inscriptions on the house are preserved, but brick monumental inserts are attached from both ends."

[I can understand the following inscriptions: Motherland! Here the guards fought heroically against the enemy… Ilya Voronov, Pavel Demchenko, Alexei Anikin, Pavel Dovysenko. This house was defended by Sergeant Guards Yakov Fedotovich Pavlov. - Alex Him]

Arsenyeva Street, the house #6.

"This house is located in the southern part of the city. The Germans did not get here. But traces of destruction on the house are clearly visible under modern paint."

Fight at the destroyed building of the hotel "Bolshaya Stalingradskaya".

"Part of the old Tsaritsyn city (Stalingrad until 1925 was known as Tsaritsyn) had a diagonal location of streets, after the war instead of them the streets were made parallel and perpendicular to the Volga river. The first street made was Mira street. It is on the right on the photo."

The Soviet T-34 tanks at the station.

"The station was also severely damaged during the fighting. After the war, in its place, a new station was constructed, not much resembling the old one."

Soldiers at the Museum of Defense of Tsaritsyn after the fighting.

"Now it is called the Volgograd Memorial and Historical Museum, there is a very interesting exposition devoted to the Civil War. Behind the backs of the soldiers we can see a monument to the legendary Cossack Konstantin Nedorubov, a full St. George cavalier and hero of the Soviet Union. We can also see the station building behind."

The museum building after the fighting.

"The building of the museum was badly damaged during the fighting, but it was restored in its original form."

The monument to Stalin at the Museum of Defense of Tsaritsyn and the House of housing and communal services.

"You can see the destroyed House of housing and communal services on the left, and in the distance the surviving building at Kommunisticheskaya Street, the house #10."

The fountain "Children's dance" on Privokzalnaya square.

"On the site of the fountain is a parking now."

Privokzalnaya square. The fountain "Children's dance".

"This photo of Emmanuel Evzerikhin is the most famous photo taken in the fighting Stalingrad."

The fountain "Children's dance" against the background of the Museum of Defense of Tsaritsyn.

"This fountain was a typical one, in several cities of the Soviet Union exactly the same ones were built (Voronezh, Dnepropetrovsk)."

The fountain "Children's dance".

"The fountain was restored after the war, but in the 1950s it was disassembled as not representing artistic value."

The fountain "Children's dance".

"The fountain was restored and opened on August 23, 2013."

Dzerzhinskogo square. Tank T-34 at the Stalingrad Tractor Plant (and opposite the school #3).

"Exactly the same tank, and maybe this one, is here on the left as a monument."

A dugout in the courtyard of school #3.

"The fate of the civilian population of Stalingrad is tragic. Of those who survived the bombing, many did not have time to evacuate, they had to live practically on the front lines in basements and dugouts. On the territory occupied by the Germans, the civilian population was evicted and moved to Germany."

T-34 tank on the square of the Fallen fighters.

"And again, the building of the Universal store, which was shining through the hotel "Intourist", helped to determine the location."

Beketovka [the village located 16 kilometers from the city center]. Paulus after the surrender before the first interrogation at the headquarters of the 64th Army.

"On January 30, Hitler give the rank of General-Field Marshal to Paulus. The radiogram with this order was adopted when the Soviet assault groups were approaching to headquarters of Paulus at the Universal store. Hitler hoped that Paulus in this case would prefer to shoot himself. However, in the morning the Field Marshal was taken prisoner. By 12 o'clock he had already been delivered to Beketovka at the headquarters of the commander of the 64th Army, General Shumilov, where the Field Marshal's first interrogation took place."

Beketovka. Officers of headquarters of Paulus after the surrender.

"This building housed the headquarters of the commander of the 64th Army, General Shumilov, as indicated by the appropriate commemorative plaque, as well as the fact that the first interrogation of the German Field Marshal took place here."

German prisoners on the square of the Fallen fighters.

"I think this corner of the hotel "Bolshaya Stalingradskaya" also is the photographic symbol of the Battle of Stalingrad, like the fountain "Children's dance".

German prisoners on the square of the Fallen fighters.

"In Stalingrad, more than 91,000 German soldiers and officers were taken prisoner, including 24 generals."

German prisoners at the Krasny Oktyabr factory.

"One of the three destroyed buildings, left in Volgograd as a monument, is located on the territory of the Krasny Oktyabr factory. This is a two-storey brick building of the central factory laboratory. From this perspective, only its right end is visible, the rest is covered by the temple now. But on the collage everything is visible through the temple."

Captured soldiers of the 6th German army at the Elevator.

"6th Wehrmacht Army:
1940 - entered Paris without a fight
1941 - stormed Kiev with significant losses
1942/43 - completely defeated and capitulated in Stalingrad."

German prisoners dismantle the ruins of the station.

"German prisoners began to return to Germany in 1945. At first, the disabled and sick people were released. By 1950, most Germans who did not participate in war crimes went home. The lasts of them was released by 1955."

The destroyed Gergardt mill and Panorama.

"Very often the mill is mistakenly called Pavlov House."

The Railwaymen's Club / The Catholic temple.

[As I understand this building was built as a Catholic temple. In Soviet times it was a club. Now this is again the Catholic temple - Alex Him]

Proletkultskaya street.

Mamayev Kurgan after the battles.

Gogol street.

"The building of the Nail factory is one of the few preserved after the war. To the left, behind the fence, is the Museum of Defense of Tsaritsyn, and the remaining corner of the hotel "Bolshaya Stalingradskaya" and the square of the Fallen fighters are visible ahead."

Cartage transport.

"I read somewhere that some rear units were with camel when they came in Berlin. This shocked the Germans more than the Russian tanks."

At the building of the Universal store.

"Again, the same point on Ostrovsky Street in the courtyard of the hotel Intourist. It was here, in the basement, for the first time in history the German Field Marshal was surrendered."
