Default Jew Sentenced For Organ Trafficking, Extortion

Sami Shem Tov gets a three-year sentence for extorting 'donors' and paying them as little as $2,000 to donate a kidney while at the same time charging recipients exponentially more money.

Shem Tov recruited and subsequently took grievous advantage of donors who he exploited financially and mislead about the health risks involved in making their ‘donations.’ In the words of the court, Shem Tov “cheated those involved and endangered them while taking advantage of their financial, mental and health concerns for [his own] financial profit.”

Shem Tov worked at Hadassah Ein Karem Hospital. He used his connections there to arrange pre-donation checkups and screenings for compatibility, and then sent the ‘donor’ and recipient to the Philippines or Ecuador for the transplant.

Shem Tov was illegally paid large amounts of money by the recipients but paid the ‘donors’ almost nothing.

A few months ago, Shem Tov reportedly pleaded guilty to additional charges of “exploitation, attempted exploitation, fraudulently obtaining benefits and extortion.”

In one incident related to those charges, Shem Tov extorted a donor – a single mother of two children – who changed her mind and decided not to ‘donate’ her kidney once she was already in the Philippines.

Shem Tov threatened to physically hurt her and he forced her to ‘donate’ the kidney. And then he paid the woman a total of NIS 7,250 ($2000).

Shem Tov was sentenced to three years imprisonment. In addition, he was also ordered to pay compensation to the plaintiffs.

"The charges show that monetary reward was the defendant's main motivation, not the wellbeing of the patients that needed the transplants.… [Shem Tov] took full advantage of the distress suffered by the recipients and donors who were pushed into making the donation because of financial and other troubles, and he did not spare their health or feelings,” Judge Rafi Carmel wrote in Shem Tov’s sentence.

Afterward, Shem Tov's lawyer Roi Politi disputed his client’s sentence.

"We find the sentence a bit severe. We shouldn't forget that behind every unlawful mediation between a donor and a client, a life was saved, where the State couldn't give a solution to those who live on borrowed time other than adding them to a list of more than 2,000 others waiting for a transplant. It would be better if the State of Israel would strive for faster solutions, rather than direct its ire at those who create alternatives,” Politi asserted.
