NEWARK -- Jesus Torres was working as a pizza deliveryman on a September night in 2013 when he crashed his car into a fence in Newark, disrupting a nearby block party. Six men from the party immediately descended on the vehicle. At least one man yelled, "Get him!" Another man picked up a bicycle and threw it through one of the car's windows. Someone handed a gun to Ibn Muhammed, who banged on the driver's side window with the weapon, trying to frighten Torres. But the gun went off, killing the 20-year-old Torres, a Newark resident and an aspiring musician who had recently started delivering pizzas to provide for his newborn son. Nearly two years later, five of the men involved in the incident recounted those details on Tuesday when they pleaded guilty to charges related to Torres's Sept. 1, 2013 shooting death. The sixth man is expected to plead guilty in the case next week. Muhammed, 19, of Newark, pleaded to aggravated manslaughter and a weapons offense when he admitted to shooting Torres. Under a plea deal, prosecutors are recommending a 17-year prison sentence for Muhammed. He would have to serve more than 14 years before becoming eligible for parole. Three of the other four men – Shaquille Faines, 23, Solomon Williams, 20, and Lonnie Simmons, 19, all of Newark – each pleaded guilty to a charge of endangering an injured victim. They admitted to participating in the incident and then leaving the scene after Torres was shot. The fourth man, Raymond Hiers, 18, also of Newark, pleaded guilty to possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. That weapon was the bicycle, which Hiers admitted throwing through the window of Torres's car. In exchange for those guilty pleas, prosecutors have agreed to recommend sentences of time served for the four men. As they await sentencing, Faines, Hiers and Simmons were released from custody on Tuesday. Williams remains in custody at the Essex County Correctional Facility, because he has other pending charges in unrelated cases. Sentencings for the five men are scheduled for Sept. 21. The sixth defendant – Al-Shaqar Williams, 18, of Newark – is slated to plead guilty to a weapons offense next week in exchange for a recommended sentence of five years in state prison, according to Essex County Assistant Prosecutor Brian Matthews, who handled the case. The six men were each indicted on felony murder, robbery and weapons charges, and Muhammed also was charged with murder http://www.nj.com/essex/index.ssf/20...ewark_piz.html |

NORMAN, Oklahoma - Norman police are investigating the death of a 2-year-old little girl Elizabeth Wess. Right now her stepfather is in jail, accused of killing her, but his mother tells News 9 there is no way he could have done it. Norman police state Tyler Young, 24, was booked into the Cleveland County Detention Center late Wednesday night and is being held without bond. I have never seen him more gentle in his life than he is with her," said Tammy Young, Tyler's mom. "I've never seen him in love with someone more. She was daddy's little girl." Tammy Young still can't believe that her son Tyler stands accused of murder. She said though the child wasn't his biological daughter, he treated her like his own...... HARTFORD — Three teens involved in the killing of an 18-year-old Enfield man last year pleaded guilty Thursday and face long prison terms when they are sentenced Oct. 30..
Robert Stevenson, 17, and Cheyenne Concepcion, 19, pleaded guilty to felony murder. Both men robbed Jonathan Torres of an iPhone and headphones Sept. 3, 2014, and Stevenson fatally shot Torres in the chest. Concepcion told Superior Court Judge Joan K. Alexander that he did not think it was fair that he had to plead guilty to felony murder because he was not the shooter. She explained to him that the charge was appropriate because he participated in the robbery in which Torres was killed. Takai Brown, 19, pleaded guilty Thursday to first-degree robbery. He drove the teens to and from the crime scene and served as a lookout, but did not directly participate in the robbery. The fourth teen, Katwon Goodwin, 18, pleaded guilty to felony murder on July 21. http://www.courant.com/breaking-news...820-story.html |

A Florida appeals court has refused to release on bail a Canadian diplomat’s teenage son while the youth awaits trial on a murder charge. Online court records show a three-judge panel Wednesday denied an appeal from 15-year-old Marc Wabafiyebazu. Wabafiyebazu faces charges including felony murder as an adult in a March 30 shooting in Miami that left his older brother and another teen dead. Police say the Wabafiyebazu brothers tried to rob marijuana dealers when shooting erupted. Circuit Judge Teresa Mary Pooler ruled in June that Wabafiyebazu posed too great of a flight risk and would be difficult to extradite if he fled to Canada. He is the son of Roxanne Dube, Canada’s consul general in Miami, who says the teen is innocent. http://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/B...322467832.html |

Opening statements are expected Monday in the trial of Ryan Roth, one of two defendants accused of murdering a father who took his 15-year-old son to buy a cellphone advertised on Craigslist.
The 2013 slaying of Rene Balbuena, 41, took place in South Los Angeles after he responded to an ad for a $300 Samsung Galaxy that his son found on the popular site. Balbuena was allegedly ambushed by Roth, who was 17 at time, and Markell Thomas, who was 18 at the time, during the would-be transaction where Roth allegedly shot the father several times in front of his son. http://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/lo...322700331.html |
