Golden Dawn leadership sentenced to 13 years in prison.
A Greek court sentenced the leadership of the extreme-right Golden Dawn party to 13 years in prison Wednesday, imposing the near-maximum penalty for running a criminal organization blamed for numerous violent hate crimes. Presiding judge Maria Lepenioti read out the sentences against party leader Nikos Michaloliakos and seven other former lawmakers. https://www.ekathimerini.com/258056/...ears-in-prison |

The sentences were given today by the court.
The leader of Golden Dawn, Nikos Michaloliakos, was given a 13-year sentence for directing a criminal organization as well as 1 year and a €1'000 fine for illegal possession of a firearm (in a country where the number of illicit firearms is estimated to be of nearly 1 million for a population of 10 million). The same sentence was given to Ilias Kasidiaris, Ioannis Lagos, Christos Pappas, Ilias Panagiotaros and Georgios Germenis. A 10-year sentence was given for the same charge to Artemis Mattheopoulos. Except for Mattheopoulos and Panagiotaros, the sentences for illegal possession of a firearm ranged from 6 months to 1 year. For participating in a criminal organisation, Panagiotis Iliopoulos and Nikos Kouzilos were given a 7-year sentence. 6 years for Polyvios Zisimopoulos, Antonios Gregos, Konstantinos Barbarousis, Eleni Zaroulia (wife of Michaloliakos) and Dimitris Koukoutsis. 5 years for Chrysovalantis Alexopoulos, Stathis Boukouras, Nikos Michos and Michalis Arvanitis. George Roupakias, the one who killed the low-life anti-Greek communist thug Pavlos Fyssas (also known for his antifascist rapping activities), was given a life sentence, a 10-year sentence for being a member of a criminal organisation, a 4-year sentence for illegal possession of firearms and another 4-year sentence for use of a weapon. 14 others were also convicted for the murder of the low-life thug and were given 6 to 8-year sentences as well as 3 to 6-year sentences for participating in a criminal organisation. Note that none of the directing members of GD were found guilty of participating in the murder of the thug… For the attack on illegal Egyptian fishermen 5 were convicted of attempted murder. 4 of them got 6 years for the attempted murder and 3 for participating in an criminal organisation. The last one got 8 years and 6 years. Again, none of the convicted were the leaders of GD. For the attack on the low-life communists of the PAME syndicate, 3 were convicted of grievous bodily harm with sentences between 4 and 8 years each. Again, none of the convicted were the leaders of GD. It remains to be known if the right to appeal the decision will have a suspensive effect or not. If it does, members will not go to prison until the end of the appeal. But because the political society has decided they want to see on TV, once more, the nationalists in handcuffs and thrown into prison, the suspensive effect will most probably not be given. Yesterday, something interesting happened. Ioannis Lagos, which is an MEP and thus has immunity (though not for long, I'm sure the EU parliament will work very quickly to lift it), came from Brussels and appear in court along with the famous lawyer Konstantinos Plevris, the "father" of modern Greek nationalism, in order to request the disqualification of all the judges because of the lack of impartial treatment during the trial. Following this request, the current judges had to pause the trial multiple times, ask for other judges to come to court in order to decide if the request was to be accepted or not. Of course, if was rejected, but the new judges admitted that the presumption of innocence of the accused had been violated. Following this, Ioannis Lagos, whose new party is now a member of the APF, said that he has formed a legal group a European lawyers, including Italian lawyer Carlo Taormina, to bring the case before the European court. Also, politicians are discussing ways of stripping the condemned of their political rights. This clearly proves that this trial is nothing but a political one. I do not know how many years of the 13-year sentence will have to be done at the minimum, but at least 4 to 5 years I believe. Although I maintain that, IMO, GD had no more political future because of the way it was managed and because of the prominent members that had left, Ilias Kasidiaris and his new party were becoming a real threat to the "right-wing" New Democracy party, appearing in opinion polls as soon as the party was created. New Democracy is the party of former PM Antonis Samaras under which the trial against GD started. Of course, he only started the trial after he was given the order to do so by the World Jewish Council. The actual Greek PM is Kyriakos Mitsotakis, married to Mareva Grabowski, "an investment banker with Greek, Polish and Egyptian roots..." In yesterday's interview with Ioannis Lagos, he says he has managed to form a group of 22 lawyers from Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, France, Italy and Cyprus. On his party's website he published a message of the lawyer Carlo Taormina: https://elasyn.com/2020/10/13/carlo-taormina/ Quote:
As for the execution of these sentences, i.e. the time that they'll have to spend in prison, the formula for the minimum is the following: years / 3 - pre-trial detention time. Pre-trial detention time ranges from 12 to 18 months depending on the MP (remember some were imprisoned in 2013-2014-2015). Things might be different for Michaloliakos as he's almost 63 years old and at 65 he might have to be released anyway. Quote:

Well, here we go. Despite the prosecutor saying that the appeal should have a suspensive effect on the sentences, the court decided otherwise and thus the convicted nationalists are being sent to prison. In December 2019, the prosecutor had said that there was no criminal organisation and she defended her position even after the court's judgement.
In all 38 people are going to prison including Michaloliakos, Kasidiaris (member of local parliament of Athens), Germenis, Panagiotaros, Lagos (MEP, currently in Brussels), Pappas, Matthaiopoulos, Michos, Iliopoulos, Kouzilos, Gregos and Barbarousis. As for the time they will actually spend in prison, if we take the sentence of 13 years and 6 months and a pre-trial detention of 12 months (Kasidiaris) then we get, best case scenario, 13.5/3 - 1 = 3.5 years behind bars. Ioannis Lagos has said that his immunity in the EP can't be lifted as long as the court judgement isn't final (i.e. after an appeal), he mentioned art 9 par 7 of the Rules of Procedure of the European Parliament. We'll see... As for Kasidiaris, he said he will participate in the next elections, whenever they are. For the moment, they still have their political rights. |

Golden Dawn victims appeal sentences
The lawyers representing victims of Golden Dawn on Monday appealed against the prison sentences handed down to members of the neo-Nazi party, calling them too lenient, while GD’s number two Christos Pappas, who remains at large, also appealed his 13-year term. Appeals were lodged by attorneys of three Egyptian fishermen and of members of the Communist Party union PAME who were violently assaulted by GD members in 2012 and 2013 https://www.ekathimerini.com/258516/articl |

Actually wasn't the British Empire the greatest murder machine in history?
It killed more than Communist Russia. BTW, the 20 million dead figure in Soviet Union during WW2, was not just Russians, it actually included the deaths of all nationalities in it. And a large percentage of them were killed by Russians directly themselves. ''The higher Soviet death tolls include ALL deaths in the counties Russia occupied after the war, or countries Russia considered as part of their empire. These include lands where virtually no Russians were living (today’s Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine, and eastern Poland). Before WWII, most of this very large area was culturally Polish dominant, with large minorities of Jews, Lithuanians, Ruthenians, and others. These are the lands where most of the battles were fought on the Eastern front (not Russia). These are the lands where untold atrocities occurred on both sides at the expense of the local (non-Russian) population. The point here that I’m trying to make is that a relatively large percentage of ‘Soviet deaths’ were not Soviets and especially not Russians. It’s a disgrace to the people who died to call them Soviets when many of them actually fought AGAINST the USSR. Germans didn’t kill those people, Russians did. Both countries started the war and bear the responsibility of the total annihilation of Eastern Europe.'' https://www.quora.com/Why-dont-we-ev...ost-every-year Communism is cancer though. |

Former Greece neo-Nazi party member extradited to serve prison sentence
May 17, 2021 Former Greek Golden Dawn party and European Parliament member, Ioannis Lagos, was extradited Saturday from Brussels to Athens to serve a 13-year prison sentence. Lagos was accused of committing several hate crimes during his time as a Golden Dawn member, a Greek party known for its neo-Nazi political views. In October, a Greek court convicted Lagos and six other Golden Dawn members, sentencing them to a 13-year prison term. However, Lagos evaded arrest by fleeing to Brussels and claiming immunity. https://www.jurist.org/news/2021/05/...ison-sentence/ |

European Parliament Still Paying Convicted Greek Neo-Nazi’s Salary
July 5, 2022 BRUSSELS – A convicted member of Greece’s neo-Nazi criminal gang hasn’t been booted from the European Parliament and is still being paid – how he spends it kept secret – a German civil advocacy group suing to force disclosure. Ioannis Lagos got a 13-year sentence but there’s been no explanation why he’s still and MEP and being paid, the European Parliament refusing to provide any information, claiming the spending of public funds is a private matter. “Despite his criminal conviction, Lagos is not only a member of the European Parliament to this day, but will continue to have access to the public funds to which all MEPs and their assistants are entitled. To date, more than 100,000 euros ($103,593) have been made available to him,” FragDenStaat, a part of the Open Knowledge Foundation, said in a statement on its website. It reportedly filed a complaint with the European Court in Luxembourg over EU Parliament’s alleged failure to disclose how Lagos used public EU funds even after his conviction, said Kathimerini. “It took the European Parliament more than seven months to lift Lagos’ parliamentary immunity which protected him from extradition. During this time, Lagos openly stated that he was making arrangements to seek asylum elsewhere in Europe – likely Norway – to avoid his conviction,” the group said. “His access to and use of public funds raises important questions: What has Lagos used these funds for? Have public funds been used to keep criminal activity going? Or to avoid a criminal conviction?” it added. “Only the European Parliament can answer these questions. However, Parliament refuses to release this information in order to protect Lagos’ ‘personal data’,” the non-profit organization said. Lagos was extradited from Brussels where he held a seat in the European Parliament since 2019, enjoying diplomatic immunity while drawing a MEP salary despite his conviction. He fled to Brussels within hours of the conviction, eluding extradition for nearly eight months, the European Parliament allowing a fugitive from justice to remain in its ranks and paid. After the report he was going to flee and seek asylum in Norway, Belgian police wentinto action and European lawmakers voted to strip him of his immunity, by a vote of 658-24, with 10 abstentions. When he got back to Greece, Lagos remained defiant, blaring nationalist rhetoric as armed and masked agents whisked him into a special police van, transferring him to a maximum security prison in Domokos, central Greece. “For Orthodoxy and Greece, every sacrifice is worth it,” he shouted to reporters during his transfer, The Voice of America reported then. https://www.thenationalherald.com/eu...-nazis-salary/ |

Greek Appeals Court Denies Release for Jailed Golden Dawn Neo-Nazis
July 6, 2022 ATHENS – Four jailed members of the Golden Dawn neo-Nazi party serving time after being convicted of running a criminal gang had their appeal for early release kicked back by a Greek court. They include a Member of the European Parliament, Ioannis Lagos, who is still being paid while in jail, a German civil society group suing to get the Parliament to release information on why he’s still getting a salary and for what it’s being used. After the decision, Lagos mocked the court by applauding the denial of the request, remaining as defiant as he has been after extradited from Brussels where he was taken into custody after reports he would flee to Norway to seek political asylum. Requests to be released from prison had been submitted by the Perama party leader Anastasios Pandazis, Elpidoforos Kalaritis and Giorgos Stambellos, all of whom said their families would suffer if they had to stay in jail. The decision follows the prosecutor’s recommendation announced at the last court session on June 15 although it’s common in Greece for even violent criminals and killers to get out of jail early or buy out their time. Speaking earlier in the session, Lagos claimed that he is a “political prisoner” and told the court that he has been wronged and imprisoned for a total of three years “completely unfairly.” The session was then adjourned until July 26 when it will rule on a request by former Golden Dawn leader Nikos Michaloliakos to postpone the trial, citing reasons of ill health, commonly used in Greece as a reason to be released. The court asked for a recent, detailed certificate on the state of his health and, if possible, an assessment by the doctors as to when his health will be restored, to aid in making a decision, said Kathimerini. According to his lawyer, Michaloliakos spent many days in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after being infected with COVID-19 and is now in a rehabilitation center trying to recover. The trial comes 15 months after 18 leading members of the party and its former lawmakers who had been in Parliament, were given sentenesof up to 13 years and eight months they don’t want to serve. https://www.thenationalherald.com/gr...awn-neo-nazis/ |

Golden Dawn: Konstantinos Plevris made Nazi salutes in court Oct 8, 2022 The trial for the Golden Dawn case continues, with tensions being raised in the court room. Only a little while ago, as reported by Proto Thema, the defence attorney of the accused Ioannis Lagos, Konstantinos Plevris, gave a Nazi salute in court and immediately after left. The incident happened while Magda Fyssas was testifying in court. Pavlos Fyssas' mother said in her testimony: "Is Lagos a political prisoner? The bones of the political prisoners will crack." Applause immediately broke out in the room. "Would you dare give a Nazi salute if you were abroad?" said Ms. Fyssas, with the lawyer giving another Nazi salute before leaving the courtroom. “Aren't you ashamed fascist? Aren't you ashamed of so many crimes?" shouted the attendees as the trial was interrupted. https://greekcitytimes.com/2022/10/0...tinos-plevris/ |

Prosecutor to investigate GD lawyer’s Nazi salute
10.13.2022 The head of the Athens’ Prosecutor’s Office, Antonis Eleftherianos, ordered on Thursday a preliminary inquiry into the Nazi salute performed by a lawyer defending a former member of neo-Nazi criminal organization Golden Dawn (GD) last week. Konstantinos Plevris, who is the defense lawyer for Yiannis Lagos, an MEP and convicted member of GD, caused uproar after giving a Nazi salute in front of judges at an appeal hearing by dozens of people, including Lagos. The investigation is based on the provisions of the anti-racism law and has already been assigned to the prosecutor handling racist crimes, Maria Karamanoli. Lawyers present in the courtroom will be called to testify to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident. On Tuesday, Plevris’ son and Health Minister, Thanos Plevris, condemned the action of his father. “There were two terrifying missteps, here, which made me shudder: the first is that the salute took place in a courtroom; and the second … is that the salute took place before a mother, Magda Fyssa, whose son was murdered by a neo-Nazi,” he told to Skai TV. https://www.ekathimerini.com/news/11...s-nazi-salute/ |

Athens Bar Association to punish Nazi-salute lawyer
08/11/2022 The Athens Bar Association (ABA) is reportedly preparing disciplinary action against Konstantinos Plevris, the lawyer representing a former member of neo-Nazi criminal organization Golden Dawn, for giving a Nazi salute in front of judges at an appeal hearing. “The Nazi salute is absolutely incompatible with the principles, the values, the legacy, and the professional ethics of the body of lawyers,” the Athens Bar Association had stated in an earlier statement. “The ABA has long reprimanded such behaviors, that insult the millions of victims of Nazi violence, and awaken disturbing memories from the darkest pages of human history. They are inconsistent with the legal ethic and are opposed to constitutional democratic order.” The case will be assigned to one of the disciplinary committees of the ABA that will invite Plevris to make a statement, before it decides whether he will face disciplinary charges. https://greekcitytimes.com/2022/11/0...salute-lawyer/ |

Greece considers legal options to prevent neo-Nazi party from running in elections
Such move could lead to banning leftist parties, opposition warns 18.01.2023 ANKARA The Greek government is working to find legal ways to prevent Ellines, the neo-Nazi party led by a former leader of the notorious Golden Dawn party, from running in elections, local media reported on Wednesday. In an effort to exclude the party led by imprisoned Ilias Kasidiaris from taking part in the vote expected after April, the government is looking for a constitutional amendment, and hence seeks a wide political consensus, according to the Avgi newspaper. However, the daily said, the main opposition SYRIZA-PS finds the government’s proposal problematic. “The amendment is impermissibly broad and allows wide margins of discretion to the judicial body that will judge that a party does not serve the free functioning of the democratic state to be able to run in the elections,” it said. https://www.aa.com.tr/en/europe/gree...ctions/2791025 |
