That's true, there has been controversy whether Wilbur and Orville Wright were the first to make a successful powered heavier-than-air flight or Whitehead. There was also a Russian inventor whose name escapes me at the moment who supposedly did it in the 1880s, but no definitive proof exists. Samuel P. Langley also nearly made it in December 1903 with his Aerodrome at about the same time as the Wrights, but his machine crashed in a well-publicized event.
