Post Ezra Pound: Jew-Wise Poet and Political Prisoner

(GLARING Hypocrisy) Ezra Pound was one of the most influential poets of his time. He was also the most outspoken, especially about Jewish bankers and the damaging effects of usury on nations and society.

Pound was well-versed in history and understood that World War II was yet another bankers’ war, with its roots extending back not just to the Treaty of Versailles, but “at least from the founding of the Bank of England at the end of the 17th century, 1694-8.”

For twenty-one years Pound lived in Italy until he was arrested for “treason” in 1945. The charge? The broadcasts on Radio Rome in which he spoke against U.S. involvement in World War II, Roosevelt, and the Jews, naming Jewish bankers as the cause of much distress, whether by usury or deliberately created wars, over the course of the previous two hundred-plus years.

Following his arrest in May 1945, he was taken to the United States Army Disciplinary Training Center, north of Pisa, where he suffered three torturous weeks in a six-foot-square outdoor steel cage with a concrete floor. Apart from the solid roof, the cage offered no protection from the elements and Pound was exposed to blazing heat during the day, with floodlights illuminating his cage at night. After two and a half weeks he, reportedly, began to break under the strain.

At this point, Pound underwent psychiatric analysis and was deemed to be suffering a mental breakdown, thus he was released from the cage and transferred to a tent where he remained for five months until being deported to the United States in November 1945. Due to his condition he was not tried, but incarcerated in St. Elizabeth’s Hospital for the Mentally Ill in Washington D.C., where he was initially placed in solitary confinement in a windowless room with a heavy steel door. Shortly afterwards, he was moved to a regular ward, where he stayed for the next twelve years.

In 1949 Pound’s wife, Dorothy, introduced him to Eustace Mullins, who was then working at the Institute of Contemporary Arts. They soon became friends, with Mullins being a regular visitor to St. Elizabeths. It was during this period that Pound asked Mullins to research the Federal Reserve at the Library of Congress. Initially, the project held little interest for Mullins, but he quickly realised the importance of his research. Pound encouraged Mullins to “work on it as a detective story”, the results of which were published in 1952, entitled Mullins on the Federal Reserve, and later retitled The Secrets of the Federal Reserve.

For Mullins, his studies of the Federal Reserve furthered his own understanding of Jews throughout history. In New History of the Jews (1968) Mullins writes about Byzantium and the conclusions Pound drew from the relationship between the Byzantines and the Jews:

Ezra Pound




Ezra Pound, heralded as the ‘founding father of modern English literature’ yet denied honours during his life, was born in a frontier town in Idaho in 1885, the son of an assistant assayer and the grandson of a Congressman.



He enrolled at the University of Pennsylvania in 1901 and in 1906 was awarded his MA degree. He had already started work on his magnum opus, The Cantos. An avid reader of Anglo-Saxon, classical and medieval literature, Pound continued post-graduate work on the Troubadour musician-poets of medieval Provence. In 1908 Pound travelled to Venice. There he paid $8.00 for the printing of the first volume of his poetry, A Lume Spento (With tapers quenched).



Pound then went to London to meet W B Yeats, and became a dominant figure in Yeats’s Monday evening circle, serving for a time as Yeats’s secretary. He quickly gained recognition in London, and came into contact with the English Review that was publishing the works of D. H. Lawrence and the author, painter and critic Wyndham Lewis. In 1911 Pound launched his campaign for innovative writing in The New Age edited by the monetary reformer A. R. Orage. For Pound the new poetry of the century would be “austere, direct, free from emotional slither.”



The following year Pound founded the Imagist movement in literature. He was by now already helping to launch the careers of William Carlos Williams, T. S. Eliot, Hemingway and James Joyce. He was now also the mentor of Yeats, Pound’s senior by 20 years and with world recognition. In 1914 Pound started the Vorticist movement. The impetus originally came from the avant garde sculptor Henri Gaudier-Brzeski. With Wyndham Lewis and others, they launched the magazine Blast. This was also the year of the world war, which took its toll of many Vorticists.



Vorticism was for Pound the first major experience in revolutionary propagandising and the first cause that placed him beyond the pale of orthodoxy. Pound describes Vorticism as setting “the arts in their rightful place as the acknowledged guide and lamp of civilisation”. In this way, the arts were welded in a mystic union with politics and society in the manner already envisaged by Yeats.



Pound regarded commercialism as the force preventing the realisation of his artistic-political ideal. Many others in his entourage and beyond, including Yeats and Lewis regarded the rise of materialism, democracy and the masses as demeaning the arts, as newspapers and dime novels replaced literature, and the mass market determined cultural expression. Hence, many were to seek a counter-revolution in the return of aristocratic societies or saw a modem alternative in Fascism.



SOCIAL CREDIT



Pound embraced the Social Credit economic theory of Major CH Douglas, being promoted by The English Review. By subordinating money to the interests of society rather than allowing the power of the bankers to run unfettered, money would become the servant of society and not the master. Money or more correctly credit would be the lubricant of commerce, a means of exchanging goods and services, rather than a profit making commodity in itself. Hence, the corrupting influence of the power of money on culture and work would be eliminated. During the 1930s and 40s Pound wrote a series of booklets on economics, succinctly and lucidly describing economic theory and history.



At the same time Pound continued to be inspired by the classical mystery religions and by the ‘love cult’ of the Troubadours, who had been suppressed. He was also impressed by the ideas of Confucius who taught a civic religion that assigned everyone a social duty, from emperor to peasant as, a means of achieving a balanced social order. He saw later, in fascist Italy, the attainment of such a State.



FASCISM



Pound considered in Fascism the fulfilment of Social Credit policy, in breaking the power of the bankers over politics and culture. He considered that artists formed a social elite “born to rule”, but not as part of a democratic mandate. “Artists are the antennae of the race, but the bullet-headed many will never learn to trust their great artists.”



Pound had written in 1914 that the artist “has had sense enough to know that humanity was unbearably stupid… But he has also tried to lead and persuade it, to save it from itself.



In 1922 Pound wrote that the masses are malleable and that it is the arts that set the casts to mould them. For Pound and others such as Wyndham Lewis and Lawrence, behind mass-man and its doctrines of democracy and communism, stood the real tyranny of the bankers. Pound considered the bulk of humanity to be ‘rabble’, “the waste and their manure” from which grows “the tree of the arts.” He writes in The Cantos of the masses and their political leaders becoming a torrent of excrement, “democracies electing their sewage.”



If one considers that the very essence of being human, of that which differentiates man from all other organisms, is the attainment of culture, then those from the culture-bearing minority of any society are definers of the human type. The masses of people are herded around by a variety of forces, both malignant and benign. Many of the culture-bearing stratum, as we are considering them here, saw the rise of a new era that placed economics above culture. Both communism and democracy sold their economic doctrines under the slogan of the ‘happiness of the greatest number’, as being the ultimate purpose of a social order. The moneyed elite has replaced the cultural elite as the definers of the human type. The aristocracy of money has replaced the old aristocracy of blood.



Pound, Lewis and Yeats all viewed the rise of these fundamentally a-cultural doctrines with alarm. Some like Pound saw in fascism the means by which the economic could be subordinated to the cultural. Then the masses could be harnessed for a cultural purpose by an ‘artist-statesmen’ such as Mussolini. Others such as Yeats believed a return to an older order, based on aristocracy and its patronage of the arts was the way back to something better than crass materialism and what was then developing into the pop culture of our time. Pound hoped the natural rulers “born to the purple”, would wrest control from the plutocrats and Bolsheviks.



Writing in “The Egoist” in 1914 Pound stated: “The artist no longer has any belief or suspicion that the mass, the half-educated simpering general… can in any way share his delights… The aristocracy of the arts is ready again for its service. Modern civilisation has born a race with brains like those of rabbits, and we who are the heirs of the witch doctor and the voodoo, we artists who have been so long despised are about to take over control.”



For those who value things beyond the material, such a cast-mould is preferable to that which has dominated the past two centuries, that of the merchant and the banker. Pound saw Fascism as the culmination of an ancient tradition continued in the personalities of Mussolini, Hitler and the British Fascist leader Sir Oswald Mosley. He had studied the doctrines of the ethnologist Frobenius during the 1920s, which gave a mystical interpretation to race. Cultures were the product of races and each race had its own soul, or paideuma of which the artist was the guardian. In Mussolini, Pound saw not only a statesman who had overthrown the money power, but also someone who had returned culture to the centre of politics. He said:


Mussolini has told his people that poetry is a necessity of state, and this displayed a higher state of civilisation than in London or Washington.”



Writing in his 1935 book Jefferson and/or Mussolini Pound explained: “I don’t believe any estimate of Mussolini will be valid unless it starts from a passion for construction. Treat him as ARTIFEX and all the details fall into place.. The Fascist revolution was FOR the preservation of certain liberties and FOR the maintenance of a certain level of culture, certain standards of living…



Pound and his wife Dorothy settled in Italy in 1924. He met Mussolini in 1933. He also became a regular contributor to the periodicals of Mosley’s British Union of Fascists, meeting Mosley in 1936. They remained friends into the post war period.



Writing in Mosley’s BUF Quarterly, Pound stated that Roosevelt and his Jewish advisers had betrayed the American Revolution. The American Revolution of 1776 had been a revolt against the control by the Bank of England of the monetary system of the American colonies. Indeed, Benjamin Franklin had stated in his diary that the colonists would have gladly borne the tax on tea. They had issued their own colonial script reminiscent of the social credit policy that Pound was advocating, and which was being undertaken in Italy and Germany. This had resulted in prosperity with a credit supply independent of the private banking system. The Bank of England intervened to compel the colonies to withdraw the script at a rate of devaluation that caused depression and unemployment. The colonists rebelled. But people such as Alexander Hamilton ensured that an independent America was soon again subject to the orthodox financial system of private banking control. Lincoln attempted the same resistance to the bankers and issued his famous ‘Lincoln Greenbacks’.



Pound pointed out in that Mussolini had instituted banking reform in 1935, and deplored the lack of knowledge and understanding around the world on what Italy was achieving. The U.S. constitution provided for the same credit system, giving the government the prerogative to create and issue its own credit and currency. Pound saw parallels between Fascist Italy and the type of economic system sought by certain American statesmen such as Jefferson and Jackson.



Pound’s Canto XLV (With Usura) is a particularly lucid exposition of how the usury system infects social and cultural bodies. He provides a note at the end defining usury: as “a charge for the use of purchasing power, levied without regard to production: often even without regard to the possibilities of production”. That is to say, what we commonly know as interest rates charged on loans for credit which the banks create largely out of nothing, i.e. as a book-keeping entry, for which we all, individuals, businesses and governments must pay back in real money as a token of our work.

Elsewhere Pound describes usury as like sodomy, against the law of natural increase.



CAGED



From the late 1930s Pound began to look with favour at the economic system created by Hitler’s regime, and regarded the Rome-Berlin Axis as “the first serious attack on usurocracy since the time of Lincoln.”



In 1940, after having returned to Italy from a tour of the USA during which he attempted to oppose the move to war against the Axis, Pound offered his services as a radio broadcaster. The broadcasts, called The American Hour, began in January 1941. Pound considered himself to be a patriotic American. He considered the real traitors to be Roosevelt and his mainly Jewish advisers. After the Roosevelt instigated Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour Pound attempted to return to the USA. However, the American Embassy prevented him. Pound was stranded in Italy. With no means of livelihood, Pound resumed his broadcasts, attacking the Roosevelt administration and usury with a mix of cultural criticism.



In 1943 Pound was indicted in for treason. Hemingway, concerned at the fate of his old mentor after the war, suggested the possibility of an ‘insanity’ plea and the idea caught on among some of his literary friends who had obtained good jobs in the US Government. Other interests were pressing for the death penalty for America’s most eminent man of letters.



Two days after Mussolini’s murder Pound was taken from his home by Italian partisans after he had unsuccessfully attempted to turn himself over to the American forces. Putting a book on Confucius into his pocket, he went with the partisans expecting to be murdered, as a bloodlust was now turned against all those who had been loyal to Mussolini. Instead, he ended up in an American camp at Pisa constructed for the most vicious military prisoners. Pound was confined in a bare, concrete floored, iron cage in the burning heat, lit continuously throughout the night. He had a physical breakdown and was transferred to a medical compound, where he began his Pisan Cantos. In November 1945, he was flown to Washington and jailed.



He, like Knut Hamsun in Norway, was an embarrassment due to his fame. A trial would bring prolonged publicity. He was therefore declared insane and sent to a ward for the criminally insane at St. Elizabeth’s mental institution. Here his literary output continued over the course of 13 years, and he translated 300 traditional Chinese poems that were published by Harvard in 1954.



Pound maintained his political beliefs and among his visitors was John Kasper, a fiery young intellectual admirer of Pound’s poetry, who became notorious as an agitator for racial segregation in the southern United States of America.



Pound had still not been formally diagnosed in 1953. Inquiries from the Justice Department solicited an admission that at most Pound had a ‘personality disorder’. By the mid-1950s, various influential figures and magazines were campaigning for his release, and the poet Robert Frost was particularly instrumental in gaining his release. After 13 years confinement Pound’s treason indictment was dismissed on the 18th April 1958.



On 30 June 1958, Pound set sail for Italy. When he reached Naples, he gave the fascist salute to journalists and declared “all America is an asylum.” He continued with The Cantos, and stayed in contact with political personalities such as Kasper and Oswald Mosley. He remained defiantly opposed to the American system when giving interviews, despite the protests to the Italian government by US diplomats. Because of his politics, Ezra Pound was refused the honours due to him until after his death on 1st November 1972.

Ezra Pound (1885-1972) was a world-renown expatriate American poet who, when it came to writing, emphasized the importance of clarity, precision and, most of all, economy of language. Pound worked as a literary editor in London during the early 20th century, where he mentored and helped to promote now famous contemporaries of his, such as T. S. Eliot, James Joyce, Robert Frost and Ernest Hemingway. Angered by Britain's role in starting World War I and disillusioned by the aftermath, Pound left for Italy in 1924. He blamed the war on Jewish finance capitalism, and embraced the fascism of Italy's new leader, Benito Mussolini. Later on, Pound expressed support for Adolf Hitler, and wrote for publications owned by the British fascist Sir Oswald Mosley. As you might expect, media outlets such as Time Magazine began taking cheap shots at the ex-pat literary genius. A 1933 article smeared Pound as: "a cat that walks by himself, tenaciously unhousebroken and very unsafe for children."

Fine and famous writers such as Frost, Elliot, Hemingway and Joyce came to Pound for literary coaching. How is it that their name recognition and awards, as the years passed, came to exceed that of Ezra Pound's? They are all honored on U.S. postage stamps (Joyce in his native Ireland), but Pound the master never was.

During World War II, Pound made radio broadcasts criticizing Franklin Demono Roosevelt and the Jews controlling him. Because of his "treason," he was arrested in 1945 by the invading American forces. Pound spent several months in detention in a U.S. military camp in Pisa, including three weeks in a 6-by-6-foot outdoor steel cage. The abuse triggered a mental breakdown, which he later described as "when the raft broke and the waters went over me." The following year Pound was deemed unfit to stand trial, and incarcerated in St. Elizabeth's psychiatric hospital in Washington, D.C.

During his 12 years in the psych ward, Pound published portions of The Pisan Cantos (1948), for which he was awarded the prestigious Bollingen Prize in 1949 by the U.S. Library of Congress. This "controversial" award greatly displeased the (((usual suspects))). Mainly due to a campaign by fellow artists, Pound was finally released from St. Elizabeth's in 1958. He returned to live in Italy -- greeting his adopted country with the stiff-armed fascist salute. He died there in 1972.

The following is the text of Ezra Pound’s Radio Rome broadcast of March 15, 1942. Pound began writing radio broadcasts in the fall of 1940. His first scripts were read by professional announcers. In January of 1941, he began to record his own scripts. Generally, he did two broadcasts per week, and he would pre-record them in batches of 10 to 20.

The broadcasts ended in July, 1943 with the fall of the Mussolini government. After Mussolini established the Saló Republic, Pound again volunteered his services, but no broadcasts were ever recorded.

Pound always spoke as a patriotic American and was given complete freedom to determine the content of his broadcasts. After January 29, 1942, Pound’s broadcasts were introduced with the following statement which he drafted: “Rome Radio, acting in accordance with the fascist policy of intellectual freedom and free expression of opinion by those who are qualified to hold it, has offered Dr. Ezra Pound the use of the microphone twice a week. It is understood that he will not be asked to say anything whatsoever that goes against his conscience, or anything in compatible with his duties as a citizen of the United States of America.”

When Pound fell into the hands of other freedom-living Americans in 1945, he was imprisoned in an open air cage in Pisa, then returned to the US where he was declared insane and imprisoned for 13 years at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Washington, D.C. When released, he returned to Italy and greeted his adopted homeland with a fascist salute.

Ezra Pound, a noted poet and critic, was a major figure in the modernist poetry movement of the 20th century Europe. Born in the United States of America in late 19th century, he immigrated to Europe at the age of 23 to establish himself as a poet. After a short stay at Gibraltar and Venice, he moved to London, where he lived for twelve years. It was during this period that he played a leading role in the development of Imagism. He also had an eye for talent and working as a correspondent in various journals, he promoted many budding artists and poets. After the WWI, he shifted to Paris and from there to Italy, blaming Jewish bankers for the war. During the WWII, he actively campaigned for the fascist regime of Italy, concurrently retaining his US citizenship. Consequently at the end of the war, he was arrested for treason; but on being declared insane, he was interned at a mental hospital in the USA, where he continued to write. On his release, he was brought back to Italy, where he breathed his last a few days after his 87th birthday.

• Ezra Weston Loomis Pound was born on 30 October 1885 in the small mining town of Hailey, then a part of the Territory of Idaho. At the time of his birth, his father, Homer Loomis Pound, originally from Wisconsin, was employed as the Registrar of the General Land Office in Hailey.

• Ezra’s mother, Isabel Weston, was from New York. She could not adjust to the life at Hailey and in 1887 she returned to New York, taking eighteen-month-old Ezra with her. Subsequently Homer too followed them. Ezra remained their only child.

• In 1889, Homer was appointed an assayer at the Philadelphia Mint and with that the family moved to Jenkintown, located just outside the city. There in 1892, Ezra began his education at the Miss Elliot’s dame school.

• Ezra spent a major part of his early years at Wyncote where his father bought a house in 1893. Here he was first enrolled at the Heathcock family's Chelten Hills School. Later in 1894, he was moved to the Florence Ridpath School.

• In 1896, while studying at Florence Ridpath School, eleven-year-old Ezra had his first poem published. It was a limerick on the Democratic nominee William Jennings Bryan, who had narrowly lost the 1896 Presidential Election. It was published in the 7 November issue of the ‘Jenkintown Times-Chronicle.’

• In 1897, Ezra Pound was admitted to Cheltenham Military Academy, where he studied Latin, English, history, arithmetic, marksmanship, and military drilling. Moreover, it was here that he learned the importance of submitting to the authority.

• In 1898, while he was studying at the Military Academy, he was taken on a tour of Europe by his mother and aunt. In this three-month trip, he visited England, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland and Italy.

• In 1900, he left the Academy to finish his high school education at Cheltenham Township High School, finally graduating from there in 1901. By now he had decided to become a poet and had told his parents. It is not known if at this stage they had taken him seriously.

• After graduating from school, he first entered the University of Pennsylvania's College of Liberal Arts. In 1902, Pound was taken on another three-month’s tour of Europe. Thereafter, he left the university without graduating.

• In 1903, Pound entered Hamilton College in Clinton, New York, with philosophy. In addition, he took up a Latin-Scientific course and studied the Provençal dialect as well as Old English.

• Now, his aim was to “know more about poetry than any man living” and to fulfill it, he learned nine foreign languages and read oriental literature in translation, fighting with everybody who tried to dissuade him from his path. This was also the time he developed from Dante’s works, the idea of long poems.

• In 1905, Pound earned his bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Hamilton College. Thereafter, he returned to the University of Pennsylvania to study Romance languages, a branch of the Italic languages within the Indo-European language family.

• In 1906, on earning his M.A. from Pennsylvania, he started working for his doctoral thesis with a Hamilton Fellowship, which not only covered his tuition fees, but also provided a travel allowance of $500. His dissertation was intended to be on the jesters of the Spanish playwright Félix Lope de Vega y Carpio.

• However, he never finished his doctoral work; instead in 1907, he started teaching Romance languages at Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana. Unfortunately, the place, as well as the college, was much too conservative for his bohemian mannerism. He therefore lost his job in early 1908.

• Subsequently, he left for Europe sometime in February 1908, arriving at Gibraltar on 23 March. Here he worked for few weeks as a guide to American tourists, earning $15 a day and then moved to Venice in April. At that time, he had only $80 in his kitty.

• While in the USA, he had compiled a book of poems, titled ‘A Lume Spento’, but failed to find a publisher for it. Now in Venice, he spent $8 out of his own pocket to self-publish the work. The initial edition was of one hundred copies.

• Later that year he moved to London and there he was able to persuade Elkin Mathews, a London publisher and book seller, to display his book. Although it did not have the kind of impact he had expected, by October, he had begun to be discussed in the literary circles.

• In December 1908, he self-published another book of poems, titled ‘A Quinzaine for This Yule’ and then spent the following two months teaching at Regent Street Polytechnic. Meanwhile, he managed to persuade Mathews to publish his next three books.

• Out of the three, ‘Personae of Ezra Pound’ was published in April 1909. It was his first commercial success and was followed by his fourth book of poems, ‘Exultations of Ezra Pound’, published in October 1909. The next book, ‘The Spirit of Romance’, published in 1910, was on literary criticism.

• In the mean time, in January 1909, he met Olivia Shakespear and through her, the English poet W. B. Keats. Subsequently the two men developed a close friendship. Incidentally Olivia’s daughter Dorothy would one day become Pound’s wife.

• Eventually Ezra Pound began to be accepted in the London literary and artistic circles and met luminaries like sculptor Henri Gaudier-Brzeska, painter Wyndham Lewis and poet T. E. Hulme. For a short while, he also received patronage from the American heiress Margaret Lanier Cravens.

• In June 1910, he returned to the USA, trying to establish himself as a poet in Philadelphia. When that did not happen, he returned to England in early 1911. After a brief visit to Paris, he settled down in London, writing a weekly column for the socialist journal, ‘The New Age.’

• In 1912, Pound was appointed London correspondent of ‘Poetry’, a Chicago based magazine founded by Harriet Monroe. He worked hard on it, reviewing the works of many upcoming poets like Robert Frost and D. H. Lawrence. Very soon, he became a well-established name in London’s literary circles.

• Sometime in the same year, Pound, along with Richard Aldington and Hilda Doolitle decided to start a movement they called Imagism. The main theme of the movement was that, any word that does not contribute directly to the presentation should be avoided.

• In October 1912, he had ‘Ripostes of Ezra Pound’ published. The book, containing twenty-five poems, is his first example of Imagism. This was also the book, in which he for the first time used the word ‘Imagiste.’

• Subsequently, he began writing for ‘Egoist’ and in 1914, published ‘Des Imagistes’, the first anthology of the Imagism movement. In the same year, he also started collaborating with then un-known James Joyce and helped to publish his two novels, ‘Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man’ and ‘Ulysses.’

• At the same time, Pound continued with his own literary pursuits, starting his long poem, ‘The Cantos’ in 1915. However, he was not very earnest in this work for it took him two years to publish ‘Canto III’ in ‘Poetry.’

• Maybe that was because the destruction brought about by the World War I had a terrible effect on him. He published a number of works at the conclusion of the war, and then in December 1920, he left England for good. ‘Hugh Selwyn Mauberley’ was the last work completed in England.

In Italy

• After residing in London for twelve years, Ezra Pound moved to France. There he became friendly with a number of artists and writers, but by 1924, he was fed up with the Parisian scene and decided to move again. Significantly, it was here in Paris that he developed his friendship with Ernest Hemmingway.

• He now chose the city of Rapallo in Italy and there he spent the next two decades of his life. It was here that he actually restarted his work on ‘The Cantos.’

• Sometime now, he came to believe that capitalism was the cause of the First World War, blaming the Jewish bankers for it. His greatest fear was that the economy would henceforth be dependent on armament industry and war and peace would depend on its hunger for profit.

• He now gave a series of lectures on economics and contacted the US political leaders to discuss international politics. He also met Benito Mussolini on 30 January 1933. Sometime now, he also applied for broadcasting rights on Rome Radio, but believing him to be a double agent, they refused permission.

• Ultimately, he received the permission after two years of haggling and from January 1935, he began broadcasting on Rome Radio, criticizing Jews as well as American policies, President Roosevelt, and even his family. He also spoke about poetry, economics, and Chinese philosophy.

• In April 1939, he sailed for the USA, trying to stop the country from getting involved in the upcoming Second World War. Unsuccessful in his mission, he returned to Italy in June or July, retaining his US citizenship.

• He now began writing anti-Semitic articles for Italian newspapers as well as for Sir Oswald Mosley’s fascist newspaper ‘Action.’ He also wrote a letter to James Laughlin, criticizing Roosevelt, and signed it with “Heil Hitler.”

• When the Second World War finally broke out in September 1939, along with writing letters and articles, he continued with his broadcast, which was monitored by Foreign Broadcast Information Service of United States. In 1943, he was tried for treason in absentia; but he defended his right to free speech through a letter.

• As the war ended and Italy surrendered to the Allied force, Ezra Pound was arrested by the US Army sometime in May 1945. He imprisoned in a small wire cage with concrete flooring, kept out of door in the American Disciplinary Training Center near Pisa.

• It was summer and the daytime was hot; at night his cage was floodlighted. He was also denied communication and exercise. Living under such conditions for two and a half weeks, Pound had a mental breakdown.

• Later, he was shifted to a tent, where he was allowed reading material and had access to a typewriter. It was during this period that he wrote ‘The Pisan Cantos.’ Published in 1948 in New York, it is the most admired section of the work.


Arrest & Release


Pound was brought back to the USA on 15 November 1945 and charged with treason on the 25th. But before he could be put to trial, he was declared insane and admitted to St. Elizabeths Hospital. Initially, he was kept in the prisoner’s ward, but later shifted to the more pleasant surroundings of Chestnut Ward.

• Here he was allowed to read and write and also entertain visitors.
Slowly, he resumed his work on ‘The Cantos’ and also started translating ‘Sophocles's Women of Trachis’ and ‘Electra.’ He felt so comfortable there that he refused to entertain any discussion on his release.

• Nonetheless, his friends started campaigning for his release. It received the requisite momentum when Ernest Hemingway, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954, pledged in 1957 to give $1,500 to Pound upon his release. Ultimately in April 1958, Pound was set free.

• In July 1958, Pound was brought back to Italy, where he lived until his death in 1972. Although he resumed his work on ‘The Cantos’ he could never finish it.

Major Works

• Ezra Pound is best remembered for his unfinished epic poem, ‘The Cantos.’ Mostly written between 1915 and 1962, the work contains 116 sections, each of which is a ‘canto.’ It is a mixture of satire, hymns, elegies and essays, covering different themes such as economics, governance, culture and memoirs.

Personal Life & Legacy

• Ezra Pound married Dorothy Shakespear on 20 April 1914, while he was a budding poet in London. They had one son Omar, who was raised by Dorothy’s mother Olivia Shakespear. Pound hardly knew him.

• He also had a life-long affair with American violinist Olga Rudge, whom he met in 1922 while he was living in Paris and with whom he had a daughter named Mary. Although Dorothy accepted the liaison, Mary never knew about her father’s other family until he told her just before his arrest.

• Both the women Dorothy and Olga stood by him during his arrest and subsequent release. However, it was Olga who took care of Pound during the last eleven years of his life, while Dorothy lived in London with their son Omar. Unlike his relationship with Omar, Pound was close to Mary and lived with her for some time.

• During the last eleven years of his life, Pound suffered from declining health. In spite of that, he traveled to London and Dublin in 1965 and to New York in 1967. However by 30 October 1972, he was too weak to leave his bedroom.

• He died on November 1, 1972, because of an intestinal blockage. His body was later buried in the island cemetery, Isola di San Michele.

Matt Koehl and Ezra Pound:
The Untold Story



Ezra Weston Loomis Pound (1885-1972) is considered the foremost English-language poet of the 20th century. Additionally, he was a political and economic thinker who was broadly sympathetic to National Socialism and Fascism, and opposed to any and all forms of Jewish hegemony. Pound spent the Second World War in Italy, where he made pro-NS, pro-Fascist radio broadcasts in English, addressed specifically to Americans. After the War, it was claimed that he suffered an emotional breakdown, and he was involuntarily interned in St. Elizabeth’s hospital in Washington, D.C.

In the 1950s, a small movement arose demanding that Pound be set free. Among those active in this cause was a young Matt Koehl, who was just starting out on his lifelong career as a National Socialist.

In 1990, I interviewed Commander Koehl about his involvement in the “Free Pound” movement. I submitted written questions to him, and he responded through the mail. This interview has never been published before. It is the only time that Comrade Koehl ever wrote about this episode in his life.

Q: Commander, I understand that you were secretary-treasurer for the Committee to Free Ezra Pound. How and when did this come about?

A: In 1957 I was asked by several individuals active on Ezra’s Pound’s behalf to join their efforts for his release. The financial means at our disposal were somewhat modest, and so my designation as “secretary-treasurer” can more accurately be described as honorary rather than real. In any event, that is actually beside the point. My participation was intended for another purpose.

Q: Could you describe that purpose?

A: Ever since Pound’s confinement in a psychiatric gulag by the U.S. government after World War II, a number of prominent literary and artistic figures had called for the poet’s release without notable success. It was the intention of the Committee to Free Ezra Pound to force the issue by deliberately adding an “extremist” factor to the equation. As one of a number of federally certified “extremists,” I was happy to play whatever useful role I could. The whole idea was that the specter of “Nazis” and “fascists” co-opting the cause of such an internationally recognized figure might finally prod those responsible for his continuing confinement to grant a release. I would like to think that in some small measure we did, in fact, contribute to that result.

Q: Did you ever meet Pound personally?

A: Yes, indeed. I had an opportunity to meet him on two separate occasions.

Q: Could you describe your meetings?

A: The first occasion was on a pleasant spring day in 1953 on the grounds of St. Elizabeth’s hospital in Washington D.C. I was greeted in hearty fashion by the poet, who expressed his special pleasure that I shared his own basic outlook in the controversial matters which had brought him to that dismal institution in the first place. Our discussion touched on a variety of subjects, ranging from economic and social theory and recondite aspects of the Cantos to the strange and stupid behavior of the American government.

Q: And the other time?

A: Our second meeting took place two years later, in 1955. The weather being inclement, our venue was the interior of St. Elizabeth’s, a thoroughly bleak and gloomy setting complete with wandering loonies and the ministrations of Jewish and Black attendants — all of which merely served to enhance the hideous gulag effect. Cheered by my visit, the old gent honored me with a carefully reasoned exposition of Social Credit theory and the principal of usury. During the remainder of our conversation, we speculated on the prospects for his release and discussed some of the individuals working on his behalf.

Q: What was your personal impression of Ezra Pound? Did he give any evidence of suffering from mental illness?


A: Ezra Pound presented the very image of a sage — in appearance, with his philosophic calm, indeed, in every aspect of his demeanor. He radiated good-will and sincerity, and displayed the poise and inner freedom of the truly honest man. And in our meetings, I always sensed a special warmth and rapport that is denied those who do not share a common Weltanschauung. Contrary to reports of mental illness, he was the very picture of rational lucidity and lively good humor. What amazed me was the fact that subjected to the most degrading and dehumanizing of experiences, not only did he manage to retain his sanity, but he did so with the most wonderful grace and dignity. Throughout the entire ordeal, Pound was quite philosophical about it all. “There are a lot more crazy people out there than in here,” he was wont to say.

Q: Was he contrite about his actions during the Second World War?

A: Hardly. The Ezra Pound I knew was cheerfully unrepentant, firm in his beliefs, and staunchly true to those principles he had upheld throughout his life. Never once did he give so much as the slightest hint that he had any regret about anything he had ever done or spoken during the ’30s and ’40s — not excluding his celebrated views on the Jewish Question. In fact, his pointed references to any number of nefarious Jewish practices left no doubt as to where he stood on that particular issue.

Q: Jewish poet Allen Ginsberg met Pound in 1968 and subsequently claimed that Pound repudiated anti-Semitism. Does this ring true to you?

A: Allen Ginsberg is an imposter. I first came into contact with Mr. Ginsberg when he sent me a postcard from India in 1961 threatening to put a hex on me if I did not cease my “anti-Semitic activity.” (At the time I was local leader of the National Socialist party in Chicago.) All I can say about his unsubstantiated, posthumous assertions are that they bear all the landmarks of the usual kosher chutzpah. Unable to deny the manifest greatness of a literary giant but concerned lest Pound’s “other ideas” gain acceptance, this Jew employs one of the oldest tricks in the book: he tries to have the master himself recant. But the master — “il miglior fabbro” — has spoken otherwise!

Q: What do you know about Pound’s connections with postwar National Socialist and fascist groups?

A: Pound’s associations were with individuals, rather than with groups as such. He was always interested in meeting and discoursing with individuals who had something to say. There were, of course, those who did not; and old Ezra was besieged by “i dilletanti” — the inescapable literary groupies who constituted a mild plague for the poet during his enforced confinement. He had a special fondness, to be sure, for Gesinnungskameraden. Notable among these were John Kasper — the anti-desegregation firebrand of Clinton, Tenn. — and anti-Jewish, populist and pro-fascist writer Eustace Mullins. And, of course, there was George Lincoln Rockwell, who trekked to St. Elizabeth’s before his career as founder of the American National Socialist movement.

Q: What is your appraisal of Ezra Pound’s place in history?

A: Ezra Pound’s role as father and progenitor of the modern poetry movement is beyond dispute. Before the message and meaning of his work is properly understood as an integral whole, however, the prejudices of the present age will have to give way to a new attitude of honesty and truthfulness. Only then will Ezra Pound be seen as he really was. Only then will the poet receive his due honor.

Q: I understand that Pound gave you inscribed copies of two of his books of poetry. Could you describe these?

A: Better still, I am presenting you with photostatic copies of those inscriptions — one written in my Pisan Cantos and the other in Personae — which are a small memento of our association.
