Sexual assaults by gangs of refugees — similar to the events in Cologne, Germany on New Year’s Eve — happened two years in a row at a music festival in Stockholm, Sweden. Police allegedly kept the events quiet in attempts to avoid public debate on immigration.

The assaults took place at the We are Sthlm music festival in August of 2014 and 2015, according to an investigation published Sunday by daily newspaper Dagens Nyheter. Most of the attendees were teenage girls, but some were as young as 11 years old, according to police.

The investigation contains email exchanges between police officers during and after the festival. The perpetrators were recently-arrived Afghani refugees, but there are no figures of how many people they assaulted since most incidents went unreported. The gangs also brutally assaulted teenage boys who tried to intervene, according to the investigation.

“The youngest girls were just 11 or 12 years old,” an anonymous police officer told DN. “I would have never let my own daughter go to the festival if I was aware of what happened.”

At least one case was severe enough to be classified as rape against a young girl during the 2014 festival. But the rape was kept quiet since the perpetrators were young immigrants and police wanted to avoid debate on immigration. Police were particularly scared that the Sweden Democrats — an anti-immigration party that’s been growing steadily in recent years — would capitalize on the assaults.

“It’s a sore spot. We’re sometimes scared to tell the truth because we think it will benefit the Sweden Democrats,” Police Chief Peter Ågren told DN. “This one is on us.”

Roger Ticoalu, the organizer of the event, said the claims from girls were so unheard of that they didn’t think they were real.

“These cases are very special. It’s groups of guys that deliberately target girls to circle and sexually abuse,” Ticoalu told DN. “We were shocked to hear their strategies. When we got the first reports we didn’t believe it had happened.”

One of the victims, named Fanny, described her 2015 assault

to tabloid Aftonbladet in an interview Sunday. She was just 16-years-old at the time of the attack.

“They were touching our butts and breasts and everywhere,” said Fanny, who attended the festival with her friends. “You felt so powerless, it was really unpleasant. When we tried to get out they stopped us and even hit us.”

The police made a handful of arrests each year, but the vast majority of the cases went unsolved since the perpetrators easily disappeared in the crowds, according to reports.

An internal letter circulated among Swedish police instructed officers to refrain from informing the public about the key identifying details of criminal suspects — including their skin color, ethnicity and nationality — in order to avoid being labeled racist, a Swedish newspaper reported.

The letter, circulated internally among police in the capital of Stockholm in September, came to light last week in a report by the Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet.

According to a translation by the British newspaper the Independent, the instructions on withholding a suspect’s identifying characteristics applied to “everything from lighter traffic accidents to serious crimes like muggings, beatings and murder.”

The Independent noted that the letter was written by Stockholm police press officers Wolf Gyllander and Carina Skagerlind, who advised that crimes reported on the police website should avoid the ethnic descriptions. The letter also advised police against disclosing to the public the height of suspects, according to the report.

“We want to avoid pointing out ethnic groups as criminal,” Gyllander said.

The website Speisa reported that the letter read in part: “Criticism is sometimes made against police regarding information about people’s skin color. It is perceived as racist. As police are not racist, nor shall be constructed as so, this directive now applies.”

This is the moment a young woman documents street harassment in Sweden, with at least two men asking her for sex after another allegedly groped her.

The video has emerged on social media this week, and is believed to have been filmed in Södermanland County, west of Stockholm.

The young woman appears to have been groped by one of the men's friend as she is walking in the street, and has begun filming as she confronts the men.

However, instead of an apology for their friend's behaviour, one of the men asks her for sexual favours, appearing to take her for a prostitute.

The shaky video is likely to have been filmed in recent months as there is snow on the ground where the woman confronts the men.

It starts with a man asking the woman who is filming if he can have sex with her, and while he cannot be seen properly in the video, he is speaking Swedish with a slight accent.

After she responds in disbelief, he repeats his question, asking her again if he can 'make' sex with her.

She asks the men if they think it's ok for their friend to grope her, but at least one follows her and repeats his requisition if he can 'make' sex with her.

The young woman is outraged, and tells the men to leave her alone, and starts walking away from them.

He then asks her why not, and tells her he is willing to pay her, to which she replies: 'Do you think I'm a whore?'

The man only repeats his offer to pay her for sex, at which point the video cuts out.

Although his background has not been verified, the man in the video keeps using the word 'make' instead of 'have' when asking the woman for sex, indicating that he is not a native Swedish speaker.
