Post YOUNG people in Switzerland are becoming increasingly right-wing and hostile towards migrants

Swiss youth are more hostile towards migrants (not pictured), survey finds

A substantial 36 per cent of those surveyed by the Young Adult Survey in Switzerland admit to subscribing to far right views - a marked rise from five years ago.

The survey, which assessed young people from 2006 until 2011 to see how their views changed over the years, found the number of youngsters who subscribed to the left went down from 41 percent down to 28 percent.

In addition, it found the number of youngsters in the political centre had also grown from 31 per cent to 36 per cent.

Children of immigrants were less likely to hold right wing and conservative views, the survey found.

One in five second generation immigrants subscribed to such values, compared to a quarter of those surveyed who were born to Swiss parents.

More than half of Swiss youngsters without an immigrant background were hostile towards foreigners compared with only 14 percent of second generation immigrants.

Over all, the research, which was commissioned by the Federal Defence Department, found that 90 percent of youngsters were happy with their lives in Switzerland.

A spokesperson for the survey said: “Young adults are pioneers of a lifestyle that reacts constantly to the latest cultural, economic and social changes.”

In 2014, a referendum was held in Switzerland, which is not a member of the EU, in which the majority of the electorate, voted to cap immigration, including from European countries.

The proposal, launched by the national conservative Swiss People’s Party, was accepted by a 50.3 per cent of the electorate.

President of Switzerland, Johann Schneider-Ammann, has resisted pressure in the past from German Chancellor Angela Merkel, to adopt pro-immigration policies.

In September, the Swiss parliament voted in favour of a policy enforcing employers to give preference to local candidates over their foreign counterparts.
