Albania's Chams want Greek apology for wartime expulsion

Albania’s Cham community, expelled from Greece after World War Two, asked Greece on Saturday to apologize for what they called a genocide against them and permit them to return to the area in northern Greece from which they were removed.

Greece, which dismisses the Cham issue as non-existent, and neighbor Albania have started talks on a number of issues including their borders and a state of war law still active in Greece since Italy invaded it from Albania in World War Two.

The talks are intended to reach agreements by Orthodox Easter on April 8 to ensure Albania has no obstacles in its path to the start of accession negotiations with the European Union, of which Greece is a member. Both are members of NATO.

Five injured in far-right attack on leftist hangout in Piraeus

Five people were injured on Sunday evening when a group of men believed to be far-right supporters smashed their way into a leftist community center in the port city of Piraeus.

The attackers were wielding tire irons and lit smoke bombs when the barged into the premises shortly after 7 p.m., attacking the people who were gathered there at the time and smashing windows and furniture.

According to reports on an anarchist website, the attackers shouted the slogan “blood, honor, Golden Dawn,” which is used by the far-right party that is currently on trial for a string of attacks, some deadly, on migrants and opponents.

Among the five people injured is the lawyer representing the family of Pavlos Fyssas, a musician who was stabbed to death by a self-professed Golden Dawn member in September 2013, the incident that is at the center of the current trial.

Greek president urges Europeans to combat forces of populism, neo-Nazism

European citizens must mount a fightback against the forces of populism and neo-Nazism which threaten the very foundations of the unification project, Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos said Friday ahead of the 51st anniversary since a group of army officers seized power in a military coup.

“Conscious European citizens must come together to combat, immediately and decisively, these groupings, above all by eradicating the real causes – as well as the subsequent wrong-headed policies – that generated and keep them alive,” Pavlopoulos said.

On 21 April 1967, seven years of military dictatorship began in Greece. During the rule of the colonels, thousands of people were arrested and tortured.

Greece is the first country to adopt the working definition of Holocaust denial

Nov 8, 2019

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met with members of the Central Jewish Council of Greece on Friday, on the eve of Kristallnacht, to discuss government initiatives in the fight against anti-Semitism, as Greece prepares to assume the Presidency in 2021 of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA).

“Greece is the first country to adopt the working definition of Holocaust denial, a landmark act,” said the Prime Minister, following his meeting with special secretary for Anti-Semitism and Anti-Defamation of the Holocaust, Efstathios Lianos Liantis.

Liantis briefed the Greek PM on Greece’s adoption of the working definitions on antisemitism and Holocaust deniers by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA).

Greece’s assumption of the IHRA presidency, will coincide with the 200th anniversary of the start of Greece’s War of Independence.

According to an announcement from the Prime Minister’s office the occasion will also focus on promoting the 2,000-year history of Greek Jews.

Nov 4, 2019

Residents of a Greek city slated to host a fresh wave of asylum seekers took to the streets to protest the move, amid growing anger over the influx of refugees that have poured into the country.

Anti-migrant protesters in the northern city of Thessaloniki called on Athens to expel all illegal immigrants and close the border to migrants. Footage from the march showed demonstrators carrying banners and Greek flags, while an activist at the front of the procession held an icon of the Virgin Mary.

Activists think that their Orthodox beliefs are under siege by an “Islamic threat,” according to Ruptly video agency

This site was created in order to present the monuments and buildings of Athens from the Mycenaean period (1600 BCE) to the Early Modern period (AD 1833), through 3D reconstructions.

Begin your virtual trip by choosing one of the historical periods from the main menu. The periods were separated by taking into account the significant architectural and city planning changes and not the equivalent historical chronological ones (although they do match to a great extent). Each period includes a list of monuments and areas. In every monument there is a short description and other information along with their 3D reconstruction.

Vandals Destroy Magnificent Marble Columns at Ancient Greek City in Albania

Jun 14, 2020

Unknown vandals in Albania have caused “irreparable” damage to a monument in ancient Apollonia near the town of Fieri, Albanian authorities announced on Saturday.

The director of the archaeological site was quoted as saying that “the damage is irreparable”, as ancient marble columns at the nymphaion of the site were brought down and smashed. The nymphaion, in ancient Greece, was a monument consecrated to the nymphs, especially those of springs.

Two stories from the Greek News.
Both stories happened the same day.
Greece is a huge Black Pill and it's probably beyond the point of being able to be saved.

Foreign minister calls for 'vigilance' against rise of neo-Nazism on anniversary of rapper’s killing

Sep 18, 2020

Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias on Friday marked the seventh anniversary of the murder of antifascist rapper Pavlos Fyssas by a member of neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party in 2013.

Dendias said in a tweet on his official account that “it was a night I will never forget.”

“The [state’s] rule of law reacted. Society and the political world must remain vigilant against the neo-Nazi phenomenon,” he added.

The five-year-long trial of Golden Dawn ended on September 4 and the verdict is expected on October 7 this year.

Mike Pompeo’s Yom Kippur visit to Thessaloniki posed ‘dilemma’ for Greek Jews

BY CNAAN LIPHSHIZ SEPTEMBER 29, 2020 6:24 PM

(JTA) — Any other day of the year would have been easier for the head rabbi of Thessaloniki, Greece, to welcome Mike Pompeo for a visit.

The U.S. Secretary of State’s schedule for a whirlwind tour of southern Europe this week left only Monday open, which happened to be Yom Kippur, the holiest day on the Jewish calendar. But for Thessaloniki’s head rabbi Rabbi Aharon Israel, the opportunity was too important to pass up.

Thessaloniki’s Jews have for decades lobbied for greater recognition of their community’s Holocaust tragedy, which many feel is relatively unknown despite its monumental scale. The city’s Jewish population went from over 55,000 to 2,000 during World War II.

A visit from a high-profile U.S. leader helps amplify the narrative.
(...)
The visit by Pompeo and his wife Susan lasted only about 20 minutes. The Pompeos were given a tour of the small Thessaloniki Jewish museum, and while there were no speeches, the event ended with a soprano performing a liturgical song in Ladino with verses from Psalm 22, a lamentation that begins with the words: “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me.”

Orthodox Jewish law forbids Jews from undertaking any labor on Yom Kippur, even carrying objects. It is a day of introspection and reverence that is incompatible with both the logistics and atmosphere of a state visit, Israel admitted.

In the end, Israel said the event occurred during a break in the community’s Yom Kippur prayers and resulted in no violations to Jewish law. The U.S. embassy in Athens had originally asked if Pompeo could visit the local synagogue, but that would have been too much of a disturbance, Israel said, so they diverted the visit to the museum.

“I could see Secretary Pompeo was deeply moved by the event, and we in turn were moved by the fact that it was obviously important for him to visit the community,” he said.

Greece urged to investigate 'possible racist motive' in police shooting of Roma man

02/11/2021

Human rights activists have accused Greek police of racism following the death of a young Roma man.

Officers used "disproportionate armed violence" when they fatally shot 18-year-old Nikos Sampanis last month, the Hellenic League of Human Rights (ElEDA) has said.

The organisation also accused police of "possible racist motives" based on Sampanis' ethnicity.

The 18-year-old was killed by officers on 23 October while riding in a stolen car near Athens.

The fatal shooting took place in Perama, a working-class district of the Greek capital near to where a large Roma community lives.

Greek court grants jailed ex-neo-Nazi MP conditional release

A Greek court on Monday ordered a prison to free a former MP from the Golden Dawn neo-Nazi party to allow him better access to cancer care, but said he must report regularly to the police.

Nikos Michos, a former senior cadre, was among dozens of Golden Dawn top members and followers sentenced to prison in October 2020 at a high-publicity trial following a five-year investigation sparked by the murder of an anti-fascist rapper.

An appeals court ruled that Michos, serving a six-year sentence for belonging to a “criminal organisation”, should be given leave from Domokos prison on health grounds.

The court said Michos’s release was contingent on him remaining on Greek territory and checking in at a police station twice a month.

Michos’s lawyer said the former neo-Nazi deputy could not access the necessary medical check-ups or treatment in jail.

Michos, a farmer, had told his constituents on the island of Evia that the country had been run by a “parliamentary junta” since 1974, the year in which a seven-year army dictatorship collapsed.

Upon his conditional release from a first prison stint in 2013, he hissed to reporters: “Only with bullets can you stop us.”

He later broke with Golden Dawn and shed light into its secretive inner workings at the trial.

Golden Dawn, a xenophobic and anti-Semitic organisation, existed on the fringes of Greek politics until the country’s 2010 debt crisis.

It capitalised on public anger over immigration and austerity reforms, garnering sufficient support to enter parliament for the first time in 2012, with a total of 18 seats.

Black-clad supporters of the openly fascist organisation took to roaming the streets of Athens, beating up opponents and immigrants with chants of “Blood, honour, Golden Dawn”.

After the assassination of anti-racism campaigner and rapper Pavlos Fyssas, party leader Nikos Michaloliakos and many of the party’s MPs were detained for 18 months — the legal maximum — in a high-security prison near the capital.

They were given conditional release from 2013 onwards pending trial.

Before that legal process could get underway, Golden Dawn fielded candidates for the 2015 parliamentary elections, emerging as the third most powerful political force in the country.

Five years later — after a trial beset by multiple delays, strikes and procedural questions — the party leadership and prominent ex-lawmakers were handed lengthy prison terms for membership of a criminal organisation responsible for violence and murder.

Greece Considers Imposing Vaccine Mandate on All Over-50s

CHRIS TOMLINSON 9 Jan 2022

Just days after the Italian government announced it would be making vaccines mandatory for all residents over the age of 50, the Greek government is reported to be considering a similar policy.

Greece is reported to be considering making vaccination against the Wuhanc virus mandatory for all residents aged over 50 and is expected to make a formal announcement on the issue in the coming days.

Deputy Interior Minister Stelios Petsas stated on Friday that the policy was being actively considered, saying that “The decision to impose age criteria has paid off, and the age limits could be further lowered if this becomes necessary,” newspaper Ekathimerini reports.
