Default Remarkable Holocaust Nonsense #9: Assorted German Rape, Murder and Torture

Remarkable Holocaust Nonsense #9: Assorted German Rape, Murder and Torture

In yet another instance of absurd claims made about the Germans in World War II. I quote an assertion of Soviet origin about soldiers of the Third Reich committing an assortment of crimes ranging from rape to torture and murder.

This is reproduced from the wildly popular history of 'Nazi atrocities' named 'The Scourge of the Swastika' authored by Edward Russell (aka Lord Russell of Liverpool) who was a key figure in the Nuremberg and Tokyo War Crime Trials.

I quote:

'Other girls were dragged into the Municipal Gardens and brutally raped: an old priest who tried to intervene had his cassock torn off, his beard singed, and was then bayoneted to death. Near Borissov, in Bielorussia, seventy-five women women tried to flee on the approach of he Germans; they were caught and many of them raped. A girl of sixteen was taken into the woods by a party of soldiers and also raped. Her breasts were cut off in the presence of some other Russian women and she was nailed to a tree and left to die.' We are here dealing with two separate but similar charges. The first allegedly happened in Lvov in 1941 and the second in Borissov in the same year.

Taking the first charge first: rape by German soldiers is of course possible, but mass rape and dragging girls to a municipal park to engage in the practice is a very specific charge. It is also one that cannot be admitted as fact without solid evidence for the simple reason that is easy to claim, but is nearly always a case of he said, she said (i.e. hearsay).

That this charge is lacking in any kind of veracity is demonstrated by the reference to the 'old priest' who tried to intervene and was bayoneted to death by the German soldiers. That there was an 'old priest' in Lvov at this point should be a surprise to anyone – since priests were among the first to be targeted for deportation and possible execution as counter-revolutionaries and anti-Soviet elements by Stalin's security forces – and that he was actually wearing his cassock should be even more surprising.

This is because the very notion that you could have walked around in a cassock in Stalin's Soviet Union in early-mid 1941 is absurd. After all this still the epoch of the League of Militant Atheists when priests were considered to be some of the worst agents of the counter-revolution by the Soviet authorities.

Therefore the whole idea that such an incident could have occurred in Lvov in 1941 is simply absurd.

The second charge related to a mass rape in Borissov in White Russia in 1941 is, like that alleged to have happened in Lvov in the same year – equally absurd. For the simple reason that once again we have no source for the claim – which is common enough in Russell's work – and the allegation is once again followed by lurid and patently false claims of German soldiers cutting off women's breasts and then nailing them to trees.

These allegations are clearly propagandistic in nature and as such without evidential support: these charges simply cannot stand.
