Czech Govt to Buy Out Pig Farm on Roma Holocaust Site
The Czech government said Tuesday it was in talks to buy out a pig farm built on the site of a former Nazi concentration camp where hundreds of Roma prisoners died during World War II. Anti-racism activists in May demanded the EU halt subsidies to the farm, part of their long campaign to remove it from the sensitive location. http://jpupdates.com/2016/08/02/czec...olocaust-site/ |

Former Schindler's factory in Brněnec to be Holocaust mémorial
Brnenec, East Bohemia, Aug 10 - The Czech Endowment Fund Memorial of Shoah and Oskar Schindler wants to turn a former factory and concentration camp in Brnenec into a memorial to the Holocaust victims, board head Jaroslav Novak has told CTK. During World War Two, German industrialist Oskar Schindler (1908-74) employed in the factory Jewish workers brought from Poland by which he saved more than 1000 people from death. The current owner of the complex has promised to provide a part of it for the fund and the local self-rule authority also supports the project. http://praguemonitor.com/2016/08/11/...caust-memorial |

Far-right politician Adam Bartoš punished for Holocaust denial
Prague, Jan 26 - Czech far-right politician Adam B. Bartos received a two-year suspended prison sentence with three years of probation for Holocaust denial, incitement to hatred and defamation of the nation in his texts and speeches, a Prague district court ruled on Friday. Bartos appealed against the verdict on the spot. State attorney Zdenka Galkova is considering whether to appeal or not. Bartos, leader of the far-right extra-parliamentary party National Democracy, defended himself based on the freedom of speech. "Some people may not like what I say, but this does not mean I do not have the freedom of speech like anybody else," he told journalists after the verdict was issued. Bartos said the statements he had made and which the court challenged became common opinions even among presidential candidates in the meantime. The people who came to support Bartos in the courtroom on Friday included failed presidential candidate Petr Hannig, a music producer and marginal politician who received 0.56 percent of the vote in the first round of the election two weeks ago. Bartos claimed that the aim of the trial was to intimidate him and force him to withdraw from political life. Judge Pavla Hajkova concluded that the prosecution was right to declare that Bartos issued anti-Semitic books and his speeches, articles and Internet comments presented Jews as human beings who only had negative qualities. The court said Bartos presented misleading statements without any evidence in order to reinforce prejudices about the detrimental influence of Jews, immigrants and Muslims. In his speech in the courtroom, Bartos compared himself to Czech democratic politician Milada Horakova who was sentenced to death in a Communist show trial in 1950. The state should not lead political trials with its citizens because this undermines its legitimacy, Bartos said. Galkova said Bartos did not challenge the fact that he had made hateful statements, but he only claimed he had the right to say anything he wanted. The freedom of speech is not unlimited, however, she said. Galkova dismissed Bartos's claim that he had the right to say the things he said since he was an investigative journalist and a head of a political party. Bartos's texts are not polemics with historical facts because they present monothematic opinions, she said. An expert in extremism concluded that the books that Bartos wrote or issued were clearly anti-Semitic and some of them even denied the Holocaust. In a separate case, Bartos received a suspended sentence for an anti-Semitic text he placed at the grave of Anezka Hruzova, murdered in Polna in 1899. The rumour that the young woman was a victim of ritual murder spread after the crime and a local Jew, Leopold Hilsner, was found guilty of it without any convincing evidence. He was pardoned only in 1918. Tomas Garrigue Masaryk, later first Czechoslovak president, was one of those who fought the prejudice in the Hilsner affair. http://praguemonitor.com/2018/01/29/...locaust-denial |

Justice minister calls on Okamura to stop “polemicizing” about Lety
Czech Justice Minister Robert Pelikán has expressed strong concern over Freedom and Direct Democracy head Tomio Okamura’s questioning of conditions at a WW II-era concentration camp for Roma in Lety, South Bohemia. Although Mr Okamura apologized for an earlier false statement about Lety, he continues to question the accepted truth about the camp. http://www.radio.cz/en/section/curra...ing-about-lety |

Brno procession protests against Roma Holocaust denial
About 250 people took part in a procession with candles walking through the city of Brno remembering the victims of the Czech Roma Holocaust and denouncing the recent statements by SPD politicians questioning the conditions in the Roma WWII camp in Lety. The procession's organisers find such statements an unacceptable denial of the Roma Holocaust, inappropriate with regard to its victims and their families. "It is our national disgrace," Roma musician Gejza Horvath said on account of the Freedom and Direct Democracy (SPD) politicians' statements. http://praguemonitor.com/2018/02/16/...locaust-denial |

Pig's head put to Roma Holocaust memorial near closed pig farm
A pig's head was placed last weekend to the provisional Roma Holocaust Memorial near the former concentration camp in Lety where a pig farm was later built that the Czech state recently bought and plans to pull it down this year, the Aktualne.cz news site reported on Thursday. The Roma Culture Museum that administers the site will not react to the provocation. "Somebody apparently wants to provoke us," Ludek Strasak, from the museum, said. Strasak said the museum would address the police only if such a thing was repeated. http://praguemonitor.com/2018/03/02/...losed-pig-farm |

Norway ready to sponsor Czech monument to Roma Holocaust
Lety, South Bohemia, April 16 (CTK) - Ambassador of Norway Siri Ellen Sletner confirmed on Monday at the site of the Lety war-time concentration camp for the Roma that Norway wants to contribute with one million euros to the construction of the memorial to the Roma Holocaust in the place where a pig farm was located. The Roma Culture Museum (MRK) has opened an information centre in Lety which commemorates the Roma genocide in Bohemia, MRK spokeswoman Kristina Kohoutova told journalists on Monday. http://praguemonitor.com/2018/04/17/...roma-holocaust |

Czech court frees women charged with promoting Nazism more than a decade ago
6.10.2019 On Friday, 27 September, the District Court for Prague 2 freed six women charged with promoting and supporting the neo-Nazi Resistance Women Unity (RWU) movement. Some of the actions they had committed, according to the court, did not rise to the level of a felony, while in the case of other actions it could not be proved that the defendants were the perpetrators. For some of the crimes described, the effect of their criminality has now expired, the judge said. The verdict has yet to take effect, which means the prosecutor could theoretically appeal. http://www.romea.cz/en/news/czech/cz...n-a-decade-ago

Czech Police investigate distribution of antisemitic book after media reports
10.2.2020 Pemic Books, a distributor in the Czech Republic, has paused its distribution of a publication entitled "The Myth of Six Million" (Mýtus šesti milionů). The book openly denies that Jewish people were murdered by the Nazis and their accomplices during the Second World War. Another antisemitic book entitled "Circumcised Republic" (Obřezaná republika) continues to be available through the distributor, however. News server Deník N drew attention to the Czech edition of "The Myth of Six Million" last month in several articles. "We have paused that publication," responded Hana Mýdlová, product manager at Pemic Books. The distributor said it has withdrawn the book at the request of Bodyart Press, the publisher. "Bodyart Press has requested suspension of distribution," the product manager said. The publishing house also deleted the book from its website last month after inquiries from journalists. The publication is from the 1960s and was written by American author David L. Hoggan. In it, Hoggan writes about the Holocaust of the Jews as a "deliberate and blatant" counterfeit of history and calls it the "genocide legend". The book "The Circumcised Republic" by Czech author Adam B. Bartoš, who has been convicted of committing antisemitism more than once, will continue to be offered for sale. "I sent your e-mail to the Head of the Purchasing Department, Pavel Hurt, and I was told there has been no court ruling and we have no reason to withdraw the book," Mýdlová responded after Deník N pointed out the existence of both books. The antisemitic publications were released in Czech three years ago, but police in Prague only began to deal with them after Deník N published its articles. When asked why investigators had not noticed the publication of the antisemitic literature for so many years, police president Jan Švejdar did not respond. http://www.romea.cz/en/news/czech/cz...-media-reports |
