PLANT CITY, FL --The Plant City mother charged Friday in the death of her 5-week-old son appears to be a loving mom on her public Facebook page.
Photographs show Talae Akei Thomas, 30, holding and cuddling her new baby boy Chase. The pictures have captions like 'crazy in love' and call her son 'beautiful.'
It's hard to imagine how detectives say Thomas killed her own newborn. It's even harder for her sister in Tallahassee.
"Chase brought a whole new life to her life. She loved him dearly, and Chase was her world," said Heidi McClendon, speaking by phone.
On Thomas' Facebook page a status update reads; "i love my family, my child's father, and even people who have been mean to me too. our father in heaven forgives us for we don't know what we do."
Thomas' family members say she's disabled and has had some problems.
"Talae did have some issues, some mental issues and you know she did have those but as far as Chase and the birth of Chase, she was very, very excited about Chase," she said. "It's really... we're devastated right now."
She said the Talae accused of this crime is not the sister she knows.
Background story
Thomas was found lying unresponsive in the median of West Grant and South Alexander streets on Thursday night. She told police she'd lost her baby and wanted to go to the hospital.
Paramedics took Thomas to South Florida Baptist hospital while officers went to her W Grant Street home to contact family members. That's when they found Chase James Urijah Harrison dead.
Neighbors Bay News 9 spoke to said they didn't know the family well.
"It was a little bitty baby, and she used to put it in a thing around her neck," Sheila Williams said. "And she'd hold it as she walked. That's the last time I saw her."
But the Tampa Bay Times quoted Thomas' aunt Winnie T. Durant as saying Thomas' problems ran deep.
"She's a very intelligent and very sweet person," Durant, a retired U.S. Army sergeant, told the Times. "But Talae started having mental problems years ago."
Durant told the Times Thomas graduated from Lakeland Kathleen High School, went to Florida A&M and became a registered nurse, following in the footsteps of her older sister, mom and grandmother.
She worked as a nurse until 3 1/2 years ago, when she had a nervous breakdown, Durant told the Times.
Soon after that crisis, Thomas lost her mother, Rhonda Parham Thomas.
A little over a year ago, the Times said, Thomas was declared legally disabled because of her mental problems. She lived with her father, former engineer Abra Thomas Sr., but moved out more than six months ago.
Thomas was charged with first-degree murder and is being held without bond at the Hillsborough County Jail.
Police aren't saying how Chase was killed - only that evidence at the scene and statements from Thomas indicate that the child died as a result of criminal activity.
