Bond was denied today for an 18-year-old man accused of fatally shooting a teenage girl earlier this week as she rode in a car on Chicago's Far South Side.
Deon Blandon, of the 11300 block of South Normal Avenue, appeared in court on a first-degree murder charge dressed in a black-and-green track jacket and jeans. A half-dozen of his family members left the Leighton Criminal Court Building weeping after Judge Donald Panarese ordered Blandon held without bail.
The victim, Taylor Fitting, 16, was sitting in the back of a Cadillac Monday night when the vehicle slowed as it neared a construction area at 114th Street and Stewart Avenue in Chicago's Roseland neighborhood, according to prosecutors.
"The windows on the vehicle were down and as they slowed down, they heard a person yell, 'there goes those (expletive) from the 9!'" Assistant State's Attorney Brad Dickey said in court.
Suddenly a man came out from behind a bush with his arm extended and fired one or two shots through the open window, striking Taylor once in the head, Dickey said. The driver sped away and drove to Roseland Hospital. Taylor was later transferred to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where she was pronounced dead at 11:45 p.m. Monday.
Witnesses in the Cadillac identified Blandon as the gunman in a photo array and police lineup, Dickey said. Five others were in the car with Blandon.
Blandon was arrested at his home on Tuesday night and later "made an admission on video that he fired a handgun into the vehicle the victim was traveling in," Dickey said.
One shell casing was recovered on the street near where the defendant said he had fired the shot, according to the prosecutor.
At the time of the shooting, Blandon was wanted on a retail theft warrant in Lake County, Dickey said. He also was found delinquent as a juvenile of aggravated battery in 2011 and received 30 months probation.
